How about some uniformity during the St. Jude March? Too many officers march with their little kids, girlfriends and two years ago someone marched with their pet hamster. Yes, he had his pet hamster.

The only ones who should be marching are officers in their dress blues.

This time of year, we hear all the excuses;
"I acknowledge the fallen in my own way"
"Until it's back on Michigan Ave, I'm not going"
"I just got off my midnight tour"

My best years are behind me as I'm in my 29th year and retirement is in the near future.

I've gone to the march while working, after work, before work & came home from trips early to march.

We owe it to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and their heartbroken families, NOT our bosses!
See ha there!
NEVER FORGET!!!

Other agencies allow retired officers to wear their uniform for ceremonial events (NYPD, Albuquerque) why doesn't CPD? I remember a large group of retired officers going to Washington DC for the National Memorial during preparations for G7&NATO but it was in civilian dress. I know some retirees never want to wear one again but there are some who attend these type of events who would want to use the uniform.

Please bring the kids just be discrete and march in the inner ranks with them.

Get plenty of pictures and have a great day to remember.

Do you think you'll be arrested if you show up wearing it? If it fits and if you can wear it well, then do so. Really, they don't control our lives anymore; no one will get a cr# on you.

My last St Jude as a sworn PO was emotional for me. I knew it was my last time there. Last march, last time with all those people who don't know right from left. The guys who wear white sox. The commander who spotted my cargo pants. And those recruits holding photos of my friends. If you never went before, go your last year. You won't regret it.

I agree put back on Michigan Ave. When I worked as a Traffic Control Aide in the police department I marched in the St. Jude parade and it was so nice walking down Michigan Ave then going to church at Holy Name Catherdial. Now I am a Detention Aide I can march but I watch instead to support it.

Absolutely right!!!

Would love my grandkids to see the incredible pagentry it was years ago, and how less prysically demanding that venue would be for us now. What a great sight and experience it was back then.

Ridulously failed art events on the Chicago river, Bud Billiken's, St. Pat's, gay pride, etc. ad nauseum and we got tossed out of sight. Let there be a separate day for the Memorial.

The old route gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes and truly made me feel the overwhelming special place that we held in our hearts to keep the city safe.

Yes, the media cocksuckers and mayors ignored the event but fuck them anyways.

What a show of pride it was for us.

WE should go back to Michigan Avenue in Presidential Election years. It would be a real spectacle and force the politicians to notice us.

There is nothing to say that retirees could not wear their uniforms but there is not organized effort to do that. Getting a P.O. numbered cap shield would be a problem. Also many uniforms at the end of long careers are a little worn and just might not fit right.

I'm retired. See you there.

You mean no Reefers? Seen plenty of those. How about the blouse that hasn't been tailored since the Academy and can barely be buttoned. Or how about the exempt bag lady who's blouse looks like she slept in it underneath a park bench the night before.

Save it Clown, this isnt pass & review @ Buckingham Palace. It's held where it is far from the Public Eye for a reason.
It used to mean something, not any more.Officers should march with their Pet Parrots.

I reference to bringing the march back to Michigan Avenue, let me tell you about my experience that occurred on the last year the march was there. I was pressed into duty at Chicago/Michigan for a little assistance with crowd control. While there I looked south and all I saw was this extremely impressive sight of thousands of Police Officers as far as one could see marching north. A small crowd had formed comprised mostly of tourists. Each one of them said how impressive a sight it was and how appreciative they were of the Police and that they would say a prayer for us as we are the only thing representing law and order. It was pretty humbling to hear some of the comments made about us by normal, everyday law abiding folks that day. So as to moving it back to Michigan Ave, I am for it. While I understand the reasoning behind moving it to it's present location, it should go back to where it was for everyone to see and the reason for it. Be proud of who and what you/we are. Let the citizens see it and remember those that have been injured or killed on this job. But no matter where it is, I will be there and I hope you are too. We can moan all we want about how it is for the bosses to look good, or it's for the mayor or whatever. But when you lose a friend, a partner, a colleague, a brother, sister, wife or husband, this parade means the world to you. And no matter when you make the ultimate sacrifice be it last week or one hundred years ago, you will live on and be remembered through this march.
See you guys Sunday.

I'm looking for it and I'll be damned if I can find it. My Grandfathers little bible/prayer book from the St. Jude Police March circa 1957.
Carried it in the inside pocket of my "leather" every day in the winter, and Blouse on St. Judes.
Need help from St. Jude now to find it.

I'm so tired of people saying not to march with your little kids. If you don't like that our kids are there, don't look at us. Because mommy and daddy are both the police, our young children will be there with us, holding our hands, and walking as proudly as we do. Being a police officer is a commitment and sacrifice that every member of the family makes. My babies have seen us cry and felt our grief over the deaths of our fellow officers, so why in the hell do you feel they aren't allowed to take pride in marching with us to pay our respects? Perhaps when they are older, they will wait on the sidelines and watch us pass. Not now. When I brought up the fact that some people have a problem with this to a family member of one of our fallen officers, her exact words were "How could anyone have a problem with that? We are all one big police family."

We can agree to disagree.
I'd be for it-IF everything still fits and looks as it should and freshly pressed.
I personally always took pride in my appearance, personal hygiene and grooming. I shined my shoes too and hated those lace up boots.
Obviously I'm retired...never wore cargo pants, baseball caps, stocking caps and always the leather jacket while in the appropriate season of the year.
Oh, and the brass numbers on my Star always was polished.

Ok, haters-your turn...

Something needs to be said about children, strollers, wagons, etc. in the formations. This was not allowed in the past. Family is to be viewing from the side lines and we are supposed to show some military style and show respect for our fallen. This is not show off your kid day.

Bring a baby sitter for your kids so they can watch mommy and daddy from the side lines. Then you can wave to them :). Kids don't need to march.

No hate. God bless you. You earned the right to have your own opinion. I don't hate the uniform or anything. Just when I retired, on that last day that I put on the blue shirt and strapped on the gun belt, well, that was the last day.

We had an old timer who always had shined shoes and fresh laundered clothes. And he was always early and he had all his shit with him every time. And if some other member of the watch waltzed in late there always was this shined shoes old timer chiming in with, "Oh here's Officer SoandSo, he doesn't have to come on time like the rest of us, nice of you to show up ." That watch never needed a sergeant to say anything to an officer. the old guy took care of that. It was beautiful too. He kept people in line because they didn't want to get called out by the old timer, and a wagon guy at that. Yup, a wagon man, he led by example and he busted balls if you came late or otherwise displayed an attitude of indifference.

See you on Sunday.

Deal!
Real quick-I remember at roll call a new P/O who was always pressed, clean shaved, Star polished etc was sitting as the Sgt rang off Beat numbers but something just wasn't right with him??
Than I noticed-he had boots on, but they were each of a different style!
My sides ached from laughing so hard after asking him if he had a matching "unmatched" pair at home?
