Charges in Theft of Guns
- An alleged thief and his fence have been charged in connection with the theft of more than 100 new guns from a freight train that was stopped overnight at a South Side rail yard in April, federal authorities said Wednesday.
Alexander Peebles, 44, and Warren Gates, 48, were charged in separate criminal complaints stemming from the April 12 robbery of the cargo train at 8000 S. South Chicago Ave., court records show.
The train was carrying 318 firearms from the Ruger factory in New Hampshire to Spokane, Wash., and had stopped in Chicago for the night, according to the charges. About 7 a.m. that day, a railroad employee noticed that several locks and seals on the train had been cut open, and police later found bolt cutters and a Ruger magazine in the yard.
Federal agents who inspected the train when it arrived at its final destination discovered that a total of 111 guns were missing, according to the charges. Six of the guns have since been recovered "in unrelated incidents" throughout Chicago, the complaint alleged. The charges did not specify if the guns had been used to commit crimes.
Um, mere possession of a stolen gun is a felony Tribune reporters. Write that one down.
But remember, it's the NRA and law abiding people gun owners that are the problem. We heard that one from pfather pfleger the other day.

Obviously law-abiding citizens wishing to own guns in the problem! If they weren't buying legal guns, then the guns wouldn't be shipped and available for criminals to steal! The same logic ties car owners to the high rate of vehicle theft. If none of us had cars, the rate of vehicle theft would plummet!
Of course you can't apply this same logic to legalizing drugs because thats unfair.
Someone on this blog once gripped that he had a something to do with a big shipment of new shoes. He thought it was dumb that there were ONLY LEFT SHOES in the shipment. He didn't figure out that it was a standard security measure to send the left shoes in one shipment and the right shoes in another to prevent theft.
I'd like to interrogate these thieves and find out what gave them that jackpot. Did they have intel from the factory, the shipping company or was it just luck.
My brother works in the shipping business out west and handles military hardware for our government and foreign governments. Weapons, sniper rifles and chain guns often have to be broken down into component parts which are shipped separately.
Are these shipments marked FIREARMS/STEAL US.
Seems interesting that they seemed to know what boxcar to target.
Boot Camp or Probation?
I hope that Rev Al and his posse will demand hard time for these outlaws spreading death machines in the neighborhoods.
Who is this pfather pfegler?
Is he one of those priests?
With ALL the freight cars coming into Chicago - which is the regional hub for so many of the railroads, how does one figure out which one car is carrying guns?
To me, that is AMAZING. It's not like the freight car has a big sign on it that says, "Guns in here".
Sounds like more than just this guy, who was arrested, are involved.
Inside job? Where was the rail security? Don't stop in Chicago for a night if transporting guns.
They ever recover any of the M4-type carbines that were stolen the same way a couple years ago?
...and how about the SIX BOXCARS FULL OF MARIJUANA that were found spotted on a siding somewhere here? Anything on that?
>crickets<
Federal charges. Better just plea bargain and serve 85%. You won't be out in six months like in cook county courts.
Phunny how the news covered Phlager's Pholly in Riverdale. The camera angles and such were interesting. The naked eye saw that the Bloomberg Phonies were out numbered 5-1 thanks to the ISRA BUT You can't seem to see any of the good law abiding folks on camera and nobody at the 2 local channels bothered to talk to them or ask any questions. Unbiased reporting Chiraq Style.
Now it seems Mr. Phlager is going to bring his 78th st road show out to St Georges in Tinley Park Today at 7:00 PM , Might want to stop by and watch the show in the appropriate attire
Likely that this was UPS/FedEx trailer -- LCL (less-than-carload) freight, all sorts of shipments loaded in until it's full.
Makes me think possibly some inside contact to say which trailer # -- no time to snip locks on whole 10,000-foot long train and go through the whole thing until you hit paydirt.
It is a back-and-forth war, developing new locks and security devices for containers as the roaches keep struggling to get in.

Is Chicago safe?
The CIA must be up to their old tricks, parking trains of guns in the ghetto to keep the domestic fires burning
Why does a train full of guns, travel through Chicago, a city with not one gun shop in its community?
Story expands -- about a ten-man crew on this gig, things got warm and they all started snitching on each other...
Rugers are nice weapons.
OT, riding my bike to work yesterday up lakefront trail at Olive Park, observed 3 amish honor student on mini MOTORCYCLES roaring up the PLEASE DISMOUNT YOUR BIKE path and head up towards Oak St.beach. "looks like its gonna be a good summer" Robert DeNiro, Goodfellas.
Peebles kid ended up shot in the head a few days ago. The same day the search warrant was done on the Peebles house.
Why stop in Chicago overnight especially on the south side with that precious cargo UNGUARDED!!! Obviously they knew which cars had the guns. How about they plan their overnight stop in Chicago as a ruse and park in another municipality?? Too difficult ??
Inside job or just luck picking a container at random?
They never heard of second day air at Ruger? Somewhat more expensive to ship, but more secure.
Someone tipped those assholes off
Has to be an inside job - either that, or one of the perps is this generation's Kreskin. And there is a certain amount of DUH-factor in leaving a carload of guns sitting in a south-side railyard. What would it have taken to move that particular shipment a hundred miles west before parking?
Norfolk Southern hiring Special Agents. Time to jump ship. You'll be working nights and holidays but you will get a pension.
So theft from the rail yards on the southside is new news? It's been going on for decades.

Homeless men fighting over cigarette.
Cook county court system is not a real judicial system it's really LETS MAKE A DEAL!
Must be a leftover of A.G. Eric Holders' FAST AND FURIOUS runs guns into bad guys hands fiasco.
If they wanted to get them through safely ship them in boxes marked SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS. The assholes might burn them but they would never steal them.
Broke in some trains as a dumbass kid (grew up by ford city bridge). Trains would sit for days sometimes! They definitely got tipped off or had a horseshoe up an ass. Those cars aren't marked with anything that indicates it's contents. Plus you know a lot of cons get a lot of those shipping and receiving jobs all over. Somebody got tipped off
These containers are shipped with a generic designation of contents, so it's impossible for rail employees to know what's inside, or what was taken. I've seen trains come into Chicago and have all the doors opened, it's just a game of odds.
If you have rail yards or tracks in your district say hello to the rail cops. At the very least they can give you access to clean bathrooms and tell you where the good hidey holes are.

Oooooooooh, PERPS! Turn off the tv; this isn't New York.
These gun mfgs. need to be forced to ship these guns via truck with armed guards, these trailers sit in the rail yards and they have a box in the front of the trailer on the outside that holds the bills of lading listing what is inside of the trailer, these thiefs walk the rail yards and check these boxes. I know because I work for a trucking company. And a lot of the times the thefts are pulled off by the railyard workers.

UPS loads -- under 200 miles, goes on rubber. Over 200 miles, trailer goes on train.
Trailer is loaded with shipments headed to a certain geographical area. Goes to a center there, gets broken down onto the delivery trucks for final delivery.
Everything bar-coded. You bet UPS knows every single package in every single trailer, by the numbers. Ever track a UPS shipment you've put in? Can see it move across the country -- when it went on, when it got to a certain point, where it is now. That's just what the public can see -- employees in the right chair can get everything. Internal investigation of who was accessing what, and why, would not be out of line.
Don't know for sure if this was UPS, but that's an example of the less-than-carload trade. Other shipments, you've got a whole container of floor cleaning compound or rolls of garden edging or something, all going to get put on rubber at the arriving end and get trucked to one place.
Something like this happened in Louisville,KY. Some how the local gang bangers got wind that one of the trains regularly had shipments of guns. I wonder if it was the same deal, shipments from a manufacturer?
If this was UPS I suspect that is where they need to look. It would make sense that UPS would have more detailed tracking available internally. If they can look up what container a particular shipment is in, they could pass that info on.
Most trains that go through the middle of the country get routed through Chicago. This causes overcrowding. It is not uncommon for trains to set for days waiting on an opening.
