At Least We Aren't Gary

  • Seven people killed on the streets of Gary in less than one week.

A pair of teens were shot to death Thursday morning — in broad daylight — at a suspected drug house on the city's West Side.

Later, the police commission quietly acknowledged six resignations from the force. The official police roster carries 204 names, spokesman Sgt. Thomas Decanter said, but that includes at least six who are off on extended sick leave.

Homicides are up 71 percent compared with last year this time. Thirty-six people dead from violent acts so far in 2015.
And that is with a force of under 200 individuals. They're due for a raise of nearly 20% in an attempt to stop the exodus of officers, but it'll probably take a lot more - it's Gary after all.

I never thought of Gary as being that violent. It was always more of a vacation spot. someplace not far away where one could go for a few days of quite R&R.

Imagine if all the projects were still occupied , we would be well over 700 homicides a year .

If we had that weekly rate of homicide here in Chicago we'd have 12,000 "death investigations" a year. That would be over 30 killed a day.

Last census Gary had about 80 thousand people.

Using their 2013 rate Chicago would have over 1400 homicides a year. Last week's rate is obviously an outlier this side of Beirut circa 1982.

Gary is an interesting PD. Their chief went to the federal hoosegaw a few years back and then promptly had the decency to die.

I don't recall any Chicago top cops going away. Now retired chiefs of Detectives yes. States Attorney Daley also charged Breczek with some BS, but Breczek was acquitted. Being an asshole isn't a crime....thankfully. Also not spelling Breczek correctly isn't a crime.

Yep! It was always in the 750+-800+ back then. Always a duel between the deuce and Fillmore who would win that years honors as most murdered.

Imagine if all the projects were still occupied , we would be well over 700 homicides a year (09 Aug.15,13:07hrs.)......Correct me if I'm wrong but back in the day (80s&90s) I seem to remember the south side having many somewhat safe working black hoods that had the lawns mowed and looked like somebody cared at least a little bit .After short shanks and crew pulled the 'jets' must come down so we can make a killing on the land with the done deal Olympics is when the shit spread everywhere. Also remember the west side being a sh*t hole in most areas and the south siders telling me they wouldn't go to the west side because those M.Fs were crazy over there.I think it is now everywhere for many reasons, but tearing down the 'jets' is a major reason.Anybody else remember this or is post star and two bars syndrome setting in?God bless the Police. P.S. There were some decent people in the projects back then, not many but a few.

That's where the Mayor forced the last Chief of Police to quite and they pay the guys shit. The moral there is just as bad as CPD.

I bet the media won't tell it like that that

And CPD alumni Wade Ingram got fired as Chief of Police by the Mayor of Gary, like it was Wade's fault that crime was out of control. Maybe if he had been given the proper resources he could have curtailed the crime. Stand tall Wade, it obviously wasn't your fault!

But is a healthy pay increase enough to boost recruitment ? What is their pension situation... that has to be a major factor too.

So true.
And, all evening long, major news outlets reported 'all is quiet' in Ferguson during the 'protests' for that 280lb strongarm robber and attempt-murderer.
Live internet broadcasts and facebook and scanners revealed a VERY different story, though.
