Honor Students - We Swear!
- The judge shook her head at the young men before her, all of them charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
One was a Whitney Young Magnet High School graduate with a 4.3 GPA who was bound for California Polytechnic State University. Another was the son of a lawyer who also graduated from Whitney Young and had been accepted to the University of Michigan.
The third had an ACT score three points higher than his defense attorney, the lawyer joked. The fourth was a graduate from Lincoln Park High School who hoped to be an actor.
Four adults and a juvenile have been charged with Class-X felonies after police a man trying to sell a bike was attacked with pepper spray, baseball bats and a metal pipe.
Their crime, according to prosecutors: Pulling up in a Mercedes SUV with tinted windows and beating a man with bats and a metal pipe to steal a bike he was trying to sell for $500.
In Daddy's Benz, too? Anyone think these offenders were both high and drunk when they decided this was a good idea?

The backstory here is going to prove amusing. Give them all probation, have the rich kids daddies pay a substantial sum to the victim, and piss test them for the next five years.
Some idiots who went to Brother Rice with my nephew attacked a guy at the sub shop on Western in Beverly because he wouldn't buy them a "sandwish". My recollection is 3 on 1 and two were actual blood brothers. Alcohol is wasted on the young.
Stupid shit and in a gas station lot with lots of cameras around. You know if this hadn't happened one or two of these guys may have ended up as Alderman or Federal agents.

Well, they saved you some trouble. They called CPD, waited a bit and then climbed out of the car to retrieve the (allegedly) stolen bicycle.
In a city where much worse goes down every day without consequence I am not too worried about these entitled pricks. For all of their academic skills they were pretty dumb. A little planning next time kids. Lesson learned and welcome to NIU next year!

Victim could have been killed. Bats and metal pipes say so. This was planned and premeditated. I don't care grade-point averages. "Equal justice under the law." Send these animals to the CCJ/IDOC animal cages, where they might learn something of life...
Selling a bike on the street for $500? One of those REALLY expensive bikes? Was it a stolen bike?

Isn't there a back story here, though? Like someone stole the bike belonging to one of them and posted it for sale on Craiglist? I heard one of them saw it and they made arrangements to buy it at the gas station--even calling the police beforehand to help retrieve the bike. Seems like a good plan suddenly went south when one or more of them decided to take matters into their own hands. Not excusing this, but I don't think it was a straight-up battery or robbery.
Now isn't it interesting how they show the pictures of all the offenders? The media has no trouble showing the picture or description of the offenders if they are white. In this case three are white and one looks biracial. But if it's a black offender then they won't show the picture and won't describe him either.
It was actually 5 on 1 - one offender was a juvenile. It was all caught on tape.
Let's clarify one thing. The "victim " wasn't selling his own bike for $500 on Craigslist.
Their only out is if their rich parents make a sustantial cash settlenent offer to the victim and he drops the charges. This nay not even be possible with the video evidence.

Are these young men an anomaly or do they reflect some kind of commonality?
Maybe society should do something to interrupt the college-to-prison pipeline that so many of our young black men get caught up in.

Well if that's true that the one of the offenders was the true owner of the bike, then good for him, and good for the judge for seemingly not wanting to screw their lives up.
The thief deserved what he got.

Great Advice Genius!
If you plan on living your life in the hood and going nowhere except and maybe a job at Chuckie Cheese or Mickie D's. If these Top ACT morons had any brains they would have talked to their lawyer dad and the police. Now their lives are ruined.
Drive up in a Mercedes with pipes, bats and mace for a $500 dollar bike. Seriously!

You see your bike (phone, car radio, automobile...) on Craigslist, you call the police and do your set-up with the police. You 'set the guy up' yourself, you may indeed be right, you'll just be DEAD right. What a STUPID move. (If the story's even true.)
