Don't Do It Tonight

Hello again boys and girls. SCC dragged us out of our peaceful retirement once again to greet the new year and give everyone a heads up.

You know tonight is amateur night, right? The drunks at the parties, everyone getting blasted because it's the New Year. You'll see it all if you're out partying. You'll see it all if you're working. You also get to see and hear the gunfire.

Oh, the memories of gunfire. You would have thought it was a Military Channel special on D-Day some years. The pistols, the rifles, the semi-automatic weapon fire, even a few fully automatic guns, all ripping off thousands of rounds all at the stroke of midnight.

We remember those days and are amazed that we came through it unscathed sometimes. Hiding in alleys, on known blocks of dope dealers and other assholes, waiting in gangways for someone to come out on the back porch and fire a few celebratory rounds into the air. And then rushing out for the first gun of the year, maybe two and three guns. On one memorable occasion, five.

As we aged, we learned the quiet happiness of finding a railroad viaduct or tunnel or parking lot and listen to the gunfire crackle, the radio pop with foot chases of coppers far younger than we became, getting that gun on New Years. We missed it. We always tried to be the police and succeeded more than not, and missing it was an odd feeling, but by that point, we were far more concerned with nursing our already torn up knees and looking forward to retirement. Just the natural progression of things.

So it pains us to have to write this in a way, but if we didn't, we feel far worse if no one told you whippersnappers what it is from the outside looking in after many decades of policing.

Don't chase the guns tonight. Don't do it. Find a safe spot, preferably with another car or two and just listen to the radio and the fireworks and the gunfire that you'll be able to pick out of the night air like only coppers (and soldiers) can do. Not tonight.

This will go against the most basic instincts that most of you have. To run toward gunfire, to save some innocent member of society, to make the world, in some small way, safer from itself. It sounds hokey, but it's true. And it's also true that you shouldn't chase the guns tonight. You may end up in a situation that you will regret the rest of your life, hopefully from a cozy retirement community, but possibly from a cold, concrete box - a prison...or a grave.

You are living in a time and a place where everything about you, from your knit hat/crown/Rocky the Squirrel cap right down to your hopefully shined (but more likely scuffed up) shoes, is despised in certain communities. And while there may be decent people around who, if not liking you, tolerate your presence and recognize the need for you, they are sadly in the minority.

If you confront a man with a gun tonight and it goes south, you will be adjudged in the wrong no matter the circumstances. They will say, "The gun was empty!" They will say, "He was headed back into the house." They will say you planted the gun or, most annoying of all, "Everyone else was doing it." And you will be wrong. Oh, you might be ethically, legally, morally all right. But you will be wrong and it will affect your entire career from this point forward.

Don't be stupid. Be safe. Be thinking about your future. Be fetal.

Hopefully coppers from 010 and 011 read this blog....they absolutely will NOT slow it down on zone 10. It's absolutely amazing the amount of pro-active stuff they are still doing over there; screaming into the radio daily with chases, street stops, etc; etc. It seems like the entire department except for 010 and 011 have gotten the memo that the department was thrown under the bus....

Check out this South Park Episode (Naughty Ninjas) that depicts how Police were bashed, thrown under the bus and how the Department shut down and finally how the politicians came back groveling to help. Then of course were thrown under the bus again when the political climate called for it again...

24 Years on the job here, I've been saying the same thing since Christmas. Some will take our advise and some will want to chase those shot fired calls. But before they do, just think about this. Is that gun pinch worth putting your family at risk, is it worth putting up your home as colateral for your bond, is it worth being splattered all over the national media as a racist and myrderer, and finally is it worth risking YOUR LIFE to get that gun pinch? Please heed SCC advise and don't do it. As one of our south side inhabitants once said on New Years Eve, officer why you trippin it's what we do on New Years.

As a now retired and former very aggressive cop who always got at least one gun on the Eve, I must agree with this writer. Things are not good right now and I would not trust the mayor to back you in any manner no what the circumstances and I certainly would trust the acting superintendent who is actively campaigning for the job with the backing of every latino politician and community leader. He wants to show he is tough and can change things, but it would be on your back and career.

So let me get this straight I hear that police officers guarding Rahm Emanuel's house we're told they had to go walk and stand across the street from Ron's house is he came home so another words is frontline workers and the police are beneath him and we're not worthy of standing around him to protect him and we should go stand across the street 75 feet away so he doesn't have to occupy the same space now it's amazing is everyone a rant and complain b**** and Mon that this happened that will really do nothing to stick together and fight it shame on us

I guess I'm one of the civilian minority who respects and admires cops, especially of the big city variety. Stay safe all.

And to the mayor, various other politicians, and the Chicago media whores, shame on you all for creating a cop hating narrative that in no way comports with reality. Shame on you all for turning criminals into victims. Shame on you Mr Mayor and others for ignoring what really ails Chicago by leaps and bounds--lawless behavior by evil street gangs. Shame on so called community leaders who carry water for said gangbangers whether out of fear or out of allegiance to said thugs.

Just remember this, a mayor who intentionally acts in ways to lose the confidence of the police rank and file in favor of the thugs is a mayor throwing all law abiding citizens (along with coppers) under the bus. It's even worse when a city is a one party, corrupt to the core, city to boot.

From my vantage point Chicago looks hopeless. I pray I'm wrong on that score.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I left the Army in December of 1991, and on New Years Eve decided to stop in at my sister's and her fiances party on my way home.

It was getting late and as midnight approached I decided to take my chances and drove down Division to get to Halsted to cut some time and was driving through Cabrini just as the clock struck.

Then the gunshots, which started off as isolated volleys until just before I got to Halsted when somebody in the neighborhood opened up with a fully automatic AK variant, a sound I knew well because my unit trained extensively with OPFOR weapons. I'd heard stories about it, but until I heard it for myself I couldn't believe it.

A former girlfriend's father was retired from the CPD and had moved out into the boonies and was at that time a small town police chief. She told me that him and his partner used to find a good spot to hole up as midnight approached and would just sit there for about a half hour until everything died down.

America, what a country.

the same mayor now talking about "more training" and every car having a taser is the same a**hole who has done nothing to make sure our record pace of retirement has been adequately replaced with sufficient manpower.

hiring and appointing one puppet after another to wear the title of superintendent and make sure he never utters a word about sufficient manpower may have a lot to do with people arriving to situations with less back-up than necessary to bring a situation under control without having to use as much force.

FTO's, a decent mix of seniority in every district, on every watch, not bunching ppo's into foot patrol, and putting leadership in place at the supervisory level with more emphasis on proven experience and less consideration for "phone call and political clout" for promotions, might go a long way in your bullsh*t 'reform efforts.'

Even when I did care and was aggressive I complied and stayed under a bridge out of respect for officers with families who I didn't want to get hurt assisting in what would've been my self-initiated nonsense. When will we realize that we are absolutely hated? Stop the proactive work already! Unless it's a 10-1 or emergency only answer your jobs and do it very slowly and cautiously. 20mph lights and sirens to jobs when necessary, assess the scene prior to exiting vehicle. If someone takes off report "I lost sight of him" and give his/their direction of flight. Please, read the news and realize you are always going to be wrong. You will be the defendant in court, civil and criminal, the one the department will investigate and punish and whom the Feds will tear apart. There is no love left for your life and your sacrifices. Another safety concern that all officers should be aware of tonight: an on duty railroad copper had five rounds pumped into his car in the 007th district, The offender was arrested and a handgun with a defaced serial number was recovered. There was that IA released regarding Ambushes to police. The Feds said it was a credible attack plan. Have 360° field of view security. If parked under a viaduct, have two cars parked in opposing directions to accomplish this.

Wise counsel indeed!

And yes... We along with MANY others remember
leaving our railroad viaduct hidey-holes to save some
tactical hotshots screaming for help from underneath
their squad car being shot to pieces from around them.

Among other things...

You see, society is determined to put an end to the
"Warrior Cop Culture" and replace it with the mislabeled/
misapplied "Guardian Cop Culture."

You see...
The Warrior Cop is too quick to act firmly and decisively.
The Warrior Cop stands firmly on the law and he has no
"buy in" on giving people who are candidates for jail cells
"space and distance to vent" in order to "de-escalate"
conflict situations.

These streets are no place to play Simon Says or Mother May I...

The Warrior Cop is like a good old fashioned belt-swinging Dad and that
drives liberal prog-tards, catered to constituents and nanny statists
mad to the point of tongue chewing.

Heh... So many don't know who "Dad" is...

Warrior Cop says:
"This is NOT a request but a LAWFUL POLICE ORDER
and you WILL COMPLY!"

(We think the real quibble is with CPD's tradition
of a famously no nonsense and hard eyed
"Don't gimme yer bullshit" attitude.)

The LAW says The Policeman is authorized
to not only give orders but is fully empowered
to make sure those orders are followed.

Non-compliance meant there were
swift and certain sanctions. The LAW
is clear.

The Warrior Cop IS "Dad" to a certain extent.

The Warrior Cop is a hunter of truly BEE-AY-DEE people (and folks)
because he knows if he doesn't do it, it won't get done and society
will be a sadder and sorrier place for it.

That's why Warrior Cop has "those eyes" and "that demeanor."
That's why people are so uneasy about Warrior Cop.
He knows and has seen "things" regular people can't get their
heads around.

The Propeller-Head academic progressives who are pushing
The Guardian Cop model are in deep and willful denial about how
this "Fixing Policing" is going to affect the Inner City Culture of Death
that is a constant in America's Democrat run urban centers.

Sometimes Policemen HAVE TO knock hard head m/fers DOWN.
That's an unavoidable fact of life.

True Guardian Policing (not the nanny-statist construct currently being foisted)
is the Policing of days long gone when there weren't entire enclaves and populations
openly rejecting law, order, a place at the table of mutual benefit with the rest of society
and the shared reward of same.

The Warrior Cops should humbly genuflect in their secure places
This NYE.

Let the "honor students" and all the other "road" scholars shoot the
shit out of each other.

Let "Stare-Down Dude" get in the grille of these death loving
m/fers banging off guns at airythang moving.

Stay out of the way.
Stay out of the news.
Stay out sight.

Give DOJ Civil Rights Division, Rahm and the media
the fistful of dick-all they so richly deserve.

The only goal should be going home to
your families in one piece.

It's your victory when you accomplish that.
Of course you'll be hated and reviled for it.

Well...
You all be safe.

You are also jamming up your fellow copper, who HAS to respond to your calls for assistance, based on your hotdoggery and douchebaggerry. Get it? I'm coming up on 16 years. I'm the fifth in my family to be a cop. I'll be on the west side tonight. Hopefully we can stay hidden from 1145-0015. I think this may be my last year for this shit. I'd like to make it to retirement. I'd like to see grandkids some day. Time to move to safer pastures. Attention young-uns & greenhorns.... Don't try and be a hero tonight. Besides the "don't chase guns" advice, I'd also say wear your seatbelt, drive slow, watch out at intersections.

Dear Sir/Ma'am...

Don't be disheartened by the clueless few.
The overwhelming majority of Policemen are firm
believers in the rights and duties of genuine, clear-eyed citizenship.

Especially the right of self defense...

Which goes hand in hand with the duty to
defend/protect the old, the young, and the weak.

The able-bodied should be able to fend for themselves
or at least collaborate their efforts in mutual defense
against the ugly that's climbing over the walls of the fort...

Happy New Year.
Peace and Prosperity

As a now retired and former very aggressive cop who always got at least one gun on the Eve, I must agree with this writer. Things are not good right now and I would not trust the mayor to back you in any manner no what the circumstances and I certainly would trust the acting superintendent who is actively campaigning for the job with the backing of every latino politician and community leader. He wants to show he is tough and can change things, but it would be on your back and career.

At the time of being very aggressive cop did it make you feel good knowing that you might have gotten a PO killed for your Stupidity because you needed the numbers and wanted a gun pinch to stay on tact or a gang team. You did not even follow what SCC
just stated until after you retired and thought about it, what a asshat no matter what you can say will justify your actions

Or how about... Be safe guys and back each other up, beginning to end, whether you want to run and gun or not? Correct, there will always be young cops--yes, like me--who want to have fun with their brothers. And there will always be wise cops who've had enough, seen enough, and just want to get themselves and their partners home safe. How about the guys who want to go hunt go hunt with the rest of the guys who want to, with a higher sense of surrounding since it's NYE, and those vets go window to window with some buddies under the viaduct and tell well deserved war stories. There'll always be both. Then there's the third group who never did shit but just want to preach how stupid and moronic the younger guys are so they can sound like old grunts. I listen, intently, to coppers who have time on, who've actually been in the mud. I respect what they offer...but like the person who wrote this post, who is obviously an old war dog and who knows this, it's in our blood. Wish I was working tonight. Be safe brothers.

Just be careful and when we finally do show up and ask to go to the hospital until you can talk to a lawyer. Tell the wife and kids to keep quite too. Also remember who wants to take away your Second Amendment Rights when you vote.

Well after all the suggestions to hide at midnight. The 15th district came alive with shots fired calls and low and behold 1563 and his team are chasing for that 1st gun. They report shots fired and then 1599 gets on air and said to clear the area.and get out. Shortly after 1563 says 1 gun recovered and then get the guy too. Boy if I was 1599 I would have my boot up his ass. This is not good supervision just stupidity 1563. Bet you don't have 15 yrs on the job.

Thank God they don't listen to dog asses such as yourself. They are doing their jobs with honor. Do your job right and you have nothing to worry about. Thankfully you are the minority in this department. God bless all police officers and keep them safe.

Do Not insult this retired Officer......Years ago Officers took pride in doing their job, getting guns, stolen cars etc. etc. Yeah, Officers had to get numbers, but not the bullcrap they get now, ANOVS, Bus checks, parkers. I don't believe Officers have to think there is a chance someone may get hurt. The job is inherently dangerous in the first place. If you didn't know that when you took the job, you shouldn't be a cop.

Officers drove to help each other and backed up on calls. When they got to a scene they actually most did preliminary investigating until the Dicks got their. Now, all you see is Officers standing their with their hands in their pockets.

Lastly, times are changing and at the present I agree that all Officers should do right now is answer their calls and look out for each other. Be safe.

Thirty three years ago, my first New Years Eve on the street I was assigned to a car with an old timer in 003. At 10 minutes to midnight we went and got a snack and then parked in the garage of a building at 75th. and the lake making sure to park facing the lake with a wall behind us. At midnight all hell broke loose with shots fired coming from every direction but the lake if front of us. There was even someone in the building above us firing off a fully automatic weapon. My partner for the night told me in no uncertain terms to stay off the radio and wait until the shooting died off. I survived that night and all the rest of the New Years eve's that I spent of the street because of the wisdom of that old timer who taught me well that first night. Although I have long forgot the old timer's name and he may have passed by now I thank you for a very good lesson that you taught me that night. I never forgot it.

DON'T FORGET: The 499 number does not include the young lady in the suitcase from the 5th District earlier in the week. That one is still a "death investigation" along with many others. Amazing how the city kept the number of murders under 500! Rahm thinks everyone is stupid.

For whomever keeps bashing JC, your a tool that couldn't hold a candle to this mans dedication and police abilities. I have worked beside him on more than one occasion and he is a great leader. If you ever stepped in some shit he's the guy you want helping you. I'm sure you'll find something else to whine about but your wrong here on all counts. He has helped more policemen and cares for coppers probably more than anyone on this job. And no I'm not him but I do consider him a friend who has seen firsthand his compassion for the police. Take your negative comments and ...

JC used to be in the Mobile Strike Force and wears his full field vest with tons of ammo on it while to and from work, he is a nice guy but way out there, Roussell used to praise him for everything and Commander Watson brought him with him from 5 to 7. working Tact used to be a great job for working coppers, but no more!!!!! Shame on you Jim, I know that you have had some rough times both job related and personal life but THINK!!!!!!!

It was a very different job back in the day, very different.Police bosses in 010 backed you up in person and on paper. The 70's were a good time to be the police. So, don't be so quick to talk about something that you have never experienced and know nothing about. And, I was not on tact and gang teams did not exist.

I was there Phil Cline never kicked in any doors. He let the young guys do all the hard work then he came in as the hero. Phil Cline ruined this department with his antics. Most of the people in charge now are Cline merit picks. All I ever hear on this blog is how bad the merit bosses are, so put the blame where it belongs, point to Phil Cline and his merit picks.

Motherf___ers have had nothing BUT "space and distance to vent" on everything around them for years and years. That is how The Situation At Hand came to be.

When the street outside begins to fill with flashing blue lights, it's an indication that something needs to be done about the aforementioned Situation.

Keep in mind, though, that if you are now mandated to go down for half your tour, backed way off and "containing" some idiot who's destroying the inside of his own house, well...it all counts towards retirement, and it ain't your stuff.

Sure don't help the RAP, though...but, of course, the city we'll have is the city they want.

I never thought that I would say this, but I agree with you. It is time now to lay back until these things shake out and we see what is left. I think the leftist class and political class will be looking for someone to make an example of to show people they are serious for reform, and for the acting sup to keep the job . I am waiting for some announcements on the fate of the officer who shot the guy with the bat. I can only tell you that I have heard underground rumblings from the leftist torch and pitchfork crowd that they will not accept anything less then adverse action , although they know nothing about the incident ( neither do I for that matter). The leftist already claim that nothing the CPD or prosecutor says can be believed and only a trial will get to the truth,

Whooo!
We're with you in wondering how those RAPS are going to look
when nearly every district has a couple or three "de-escalation
events" going?

Then a handful of feverish m/fers do the fool downtown with
a high casualty count.

But we all know that the smart people in charge have
war gamed every possible contingency while achieving
the false efficiency of reducing Police manpower by a third.

How can it be that right thinking individuals seem to "get it"
BUT Rahm and his brain trust somehow can't?

Heh... Lots of stuff coming out about how
Rahm isn't the smart, insightful "business man" local media
fluffed him up to be.

He WILL be he one to bring grievous harm to this city
with his mania for spin and message control and the
wholly unnecessary agit-prop proxy war he declared
on first responders.

You drove thru Cabrini in the early 90s on New Years eve and had no business being there. So what you're saying is you were young and dumb? Hope you out grew that.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No, I drove west on Division to reach Halsted, and just happened to pass by several buildings that made up the Cabrini Green housing complex. Sure, I had no business at Cabrini, but had to get somewhere and was taking the quickest route. It's not as if I stopped to make a crack purchase. If it makes you feel better, I drove the entire street at a speed that far exceeded the posted speed limit.

As for being young and dumb, I've been in a lot more dangerous places around the world where I probably had no business being either, but we do what we gotta do. Still here, still kicking, still going to do what I gotta do. Which sometimes includes transiting some real shitholes.

Stay safe.
