Stop with the Lawyer Bullshit

As you might imagine, the number of trolls has increased exponentially here since the last shooting incident. We've been inundated with harassing nonsense, none of which we process, mostly because it's simply ignorant rantings of unhinged loons - the kind of stuff that infests the Tribune and other media comment sections without regard to facts, actual law or a sane reading of the facts.

Here is a typical one, based on nothing but "feelings" evidently:
  • Scc, it all comes down to how many shots the officer needed to subdue this young man. The actions here were excessive. It seems indisputable to me. And yet you try to defend this as a good shoot. No.
Well Asshat - do you mind if we call you Asshat? - the number of shots has exactly ZERO bearing on anything. It takes as many shots as it takes, plain and simple. Police are taught to shoot to eliminate the threat, and if the threat is still advancing/moving/threatening, then more shots are needed. This isn't Hollywood, where a single shot from a .38 snubbie immediately incapacitates a crazed assailant with a bat. You know how often that happens in real life? Here's a clue - think of a percentage of less than 1.

Then there's the science. Dozens, maybe many dozens of studies show that people under attack in high stress situations aren't bothering counting shots. Even reporters who used to go through the "Shoot, No Shoot" scenarios never kept track of their shots and were constantly amazed that they fired as many times as they did when instructors ran the tapes back. On a good day, we can empty a 15-round magazine in well under 5 seconds. We've seen people do it in under 3.

Then there's the fact that no one, not a single media source or Department source knows exactly how many shots were fired as of yet, nor how many hit the assailant. The only number we've seen is "at least 2." So Asshat, you want to explain how two hits is "excessive" by any stretch of the imagination, seeing as how most police shootings involve many many more shots than that? That kind of makes your "indisputable" look indisputably asinine.

So this is the ignorance we've been weeding out here, not only because it's wrong-headed, uninformed and indisputably dumb, but we don't want to have to moderate an extra 100 comments from others telling this idiot to "go fuck yourself" or painfully explaining what we can in a main post, all while ridiculing the idiocy of someone who's never done our job trying to tell us how to do our job, based on nothing but a "feeling" the police were "excessive" in putting down an assailant.

I do a lot of reading and it is incredible how many people out there are soooooo stupid. They immediately know the law, they know that you use a taser, instead of a gun, they know that if the offender has a pocket knife you need to go hands on, and disarm him. WTF? Not one Facebook idiot, or media moron know shit about how it is like to work a 1st watch shift in Englehood or the west side.

Please someone bring back the shoot no shoot FATS/PRISM junk so we can see media idiots fail these scenarios.

SCC-that was a verbal bitch slap!..it amazes me how these assholes can speak with such certainty about things they will never see or experience. I don't go around spewing my opinion on how other professions operate because in most cases I realize I wouldn't have the first fucking clue. But apparently, every other swinging dick in this town (including notable pussies like the mayor, faker, Jesse) knows how to be the police. That's good, because you're going to have to do it yourselves for awhile.

If the number of shots fired now is the big deal we should just go back to revolvers. I can pull my Model 66 out of the safe. Or better yet what about flintlock pistols. And remove the City seal from the star and replace it with a smiley face. Just started working on my 25th year. I used to love this job. Now I feel like Charlie Brown after he tries to kick that damn football. "Uugghhh!"

Oh SCC your true colors are showing like mine. You used the words eliminate the threat. Just like us old timers were taught to do. But I got yelled at during the transition course for the Glocks for using those exact words. Were not allowed to use eliminate the threat anymore. The correct wording is stop the threat. That's just to make the citizens happy.. Have a safe and Happy New Year. That's with no s at the end of year.

Keep up the good fight SCC. I couldnt imagine not having this blog around. It's hard to believe how many years many of us had our heads in the sand about what is truly going on in this city/department. You have shed a much needed light upon the intra workings of this job.

I really need to get out of this city. It's not good for my mental well being. The $hit we see is enough to cause PTSD. The constant piling on by citizens, media, supervisors and politicians have pushed me to my limit. (Figuratively speaking)

I keep hearing guys say, just answer your jobs and write paper and you won't get into trouble. You guys are wrong. The majority of my beefs, fights and two gunbattles have resulted from dispatched jobs. Nobody goes to mental calls because they are fun. On a street stop, you choose when to initiate and when to leave. On an assignment, you have to stick around till its done. Sure you can leave, and then someone else will have to handle the job YOU didn't complete.

The game is not over, but I just don't want to play anymore.

I know the job has always survived and there have always been scandals. When I just started, the Northwestern player and the lady with the lock were killed by us. They were certainly tough times, and they too did pass.

I don't think it's going to pass this time. For me it's officially over, what a shame. I was a damn fine Patrolman and Detective. I've worked with some of the greatest people G-D created. Right now It's like those old west movies whose theme was old Cowboys being out of place in a modernizing society. Those movies were about the world becoming advanced/better. This is not the case here, things are not improving.

The city will never recover from the morale damage inflicted upon the department. It is soooo effed up right now. Internally the job is even more screwed up. Almost all of our leaders are multiple merit appointees, and these guys and gals are borderline retarded. How can they possibly right the ship?

Sorry for the long post, but these things are needed to be said. Be safe brothers, and always have someone watching behind you on street interviews. I can't help but think someone is going to try and ambush us. What other job would you have worries like this?

Should the police let a knife wielding offender disembowel somebody or cut somebody's eye out before they take action? How many shots would be justified after these actions? How many shots would be justified if it's one of your loved ones getting attacked?

I, being raised by good parents and following the example of actual good role models in life, have always been a supporter of the police. In my line of work I deal with police often and see the many, many GOOD things officers do for the public. But reading this blog has given me a far better understanding of why they do the job the way they do, and I thank you for that. I'm not a cop nor am I resident of Illinois even, but I love this blog. Thanks for all you do, both on and off duty.

The "number of shots" mantra is raised with increasing frequency today and it's really irrelevant. Use of fatal force is either justified or it isn't. To hyperemotional people that will be irrelevant, of course.

The frenzy should not be unanticipated with the "instant gratification" of modern media. It does suggest that a better job needs to be done -- though it may fall on deaf ears -- of educating the public. Chicago media has done a pretty poor job of explaining use of force from the officer's and legal perspectives.

A few months ago the DA up in Milwaukee in releasing his report on an officer-involved shooting addressed the "number of shots" issue from both a practical and legal explanation. With modern weapons you can fire off multiple shots in the time it took us wheel gunners to get off one or two. He also had a use of force expert demonstrate it. The hyperemotional and irrational won't listen but at least it's out there. And from the brass on up it's time that this story be told from the street level perspective instead of ducking and hiding from the truth.

The Milwaukee case (Dontre Hamilton) is of note. Hamilton was a mentally ill homeless young man who was rousted on a downtown street. Hamilton grabbed the officer's baton and was shot after he armed himself. The officer was fired, not for the shooting (ruled justified) but for how he handled the initial interaction. Though the firing is being appealed (there is no precedent for firing an officer based on his demeanor without progressive discipline so the argument is that the chief is punishing the results vs. the conduct) I see the point in that while it's a clean shoot maybe it wouldn't have gone that far had the officer not thrown gasoline on the fire).

Over the years I have seen far too many instances where some officers totally lack the ability to talk to people. It's an art form. It's a weapon, too. And just as some guys aren't the best shots at the range others are horrible in how they approach situations and deal with people. Don't think there weren't times in my younger days when I would cringe when I had someone calmed down and cooperative and then some hothead shows up. Proficiency in dealing with people under a myriad of stressful situations is a skill set like any other and is far too lacking. Worse, the politicians will dig it up and throw it out but they, too, are just as much to blame.

Just as every time someone gets shot we can't have a thousand people in the street automatically condemning the officer we can't always automatically assume that the officer was right even if (as illustrated by the Milwaukee case) he was legally justified. We all know there are times when nothing short of prompt fatal force is called for and to debate it on the street could endanger the safety of officers and others. And where in all of this is there any concern for the officer involved? It isn't easy to bring the hammer down on someone and, more often than not, the times I've known it to happen the officers are mostly the more solid guys who weren't itching for a confrontation. And you never read or hear about the many more times officers would have been justified in taking someone out that they didn't. There must be a much better job in telling this story.

This is not a good time for anyone to be a cop. Those of us who survived and moved on to old age are certainly saddened by this. But perhaps not entirely surprised, either. In a world where technology has increasingly kicked human interaction and decision making aside is it not possible that younger officers brought up in a world of using technology would focus more on using it vs. human solutions? I know it's a heavy topic but, hey, it's out there. Just like photo red light camera traps.

SCC -- Our 40th President, the great Ronald Reagan, summed up the problem with liberals very nicely in this quote: .......
-----> "The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." <-----

Another problem liberals have is that they don't 'Think' they --- 'Feel'. They admit this themselves all the time on television. I first really noticed it with that leftist loon, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Commie, SF).

When speaking, good old San Fran Nan would start off saying: 'We feel this legislation will blah blah blah'. Instead of saying; 'We THINK this blah blah. She did this every fricken time, Nothing but -- Feel, feel, feel, feel. Sen. Chuck 'The Schmuck' Schumer (Commie, NYC) was another one with the feel, feel feel, feel, bullshit.

But they all do it, and not just the politicians, but journalists in print too, or when the Trolls are posting their typical nonsense on the Internet from mommy's basement. It's feel, feel, feel, feel,.

Granted, liberals are not too smart so actually THINKING is beyond their skill set and 'Feelings' is all they have left. But come on, 'Feelings' do not overrule critical THINKING.

(You can verify this liberal Moonbat 'feeling' bullshit on any article on/about Firearms that has comments. The liberal pantywaists will be out in force whining about their FEELINGS, that guns make them 'FEEL' unsafe. Not that they actually THINK they'll be unsafe, it's just a 'feeling'.

Lotsa tricks in the hat can be pulled out. Some of my favorites: "WHOA, Hold on on! I'm LARGE and I'm in CHARGE!"....or.... Grab a white handkercief from your pocket and throw it down while saying, "TIME OUT CALLED!". I've even gone as far as saying, "Hey, is that A bottle of Crown there?" Grabbed it, taken a slug and asked if anyone wanted to have one also? Okay, now that we've had a drink together, what's going on here? They laughed and called me the "cool police" and things were resolved easily with the tension having been broken. I waded into a couple of hundred[no exageration]teens to stop an after school fight. ASsed the two would be combatants if both of them wanted to duke it out?". They said yes so I told every one to move it into the alley. Supporters of each were told to get to separate sides. The two dudes danced for five minutes with neither of them landing a blow and then called it quits and walked off as friends. Then everyone left. Yeah, I know that that might not work today but even then, it was a bit of a radical approach. Better than calling for more units and causing a riot. The job used to be so much fun!

War stories, over and out.

Stay safe and fetal.
