Just What Rahm Didn't Need

  • Nearly every one of the thousands of Chicago teachers who cast ballots last week to determine whether they could go on strike voted to do so, blowing past a 75 percent approval mandated by the state.

The Chicago Teachers Union announced Monday that 96.5 percent of those casting ballots last week voted to back the strike. With nearly 92 percent of members voting, that means about 88 percent of all members support a strike should ongoing contract negotiations fail, according to CTU vice president Jesse Sharkey, who described the results as “overwhelming.”

That’s a shade lower than in 2012 when 89.7 percent of all CTU members voted to strike before walking out for seven school days.
Rahm supported that 75% approval number years back and Karen Lewis has humiliated him twice with it. Must be nice to be such a unifying figure of focused hatred. We'll see if Karen re-directs it at Springfield one of these days where all the big decisions will be made.

Karen would be fine if she just focused her energy on getting the teachers a good deal. NOT posing with gang banger protestors and supporting every cause that has nothing to do w/ teachers. She got them a bad deal last time with longer day for less pay and seniority being non existing now. True she made Rahm look dumb last time - but their last contract was garage. Hope she does better this time.

CTU vs FOP: if fop did have a strike clause, what percent of patrolmen and detectives would actually cast a ballot? 25, 30%? Now what if a free t-shirt was given in receipt of ballot? 75, 80%? Now what if it was a Sons of Anarchy or UFC shirt? Closer to 90%?

As a CPS teacher/CTU member, please accept my apologies for this! Also know that the CTU received LOTS of angry emails from CTU members after the robocall soliciting teachers to participate in the Black Friday protests - they're trying to jump on the anti-Rahm bandwagon in every way possible, but their anti-police rhetoric infuriated the normal CTU people and caused a bunch of backlash within the union.

Maybe, the CTU's Karen Lewis and her members should just be happy they got the 7% pension pickup for this long as that seems to be the major sticking point for this strike. Don't buy into the CTU's bullshit that it's about class sizes and paperwork for this strike, it's all about money. Based on average CPS teacher salary of $75,000, the extra 7% pickup amounts to the poor teachers paying another $5250/yr for their OWN pension. Right now, CPS teachers are throwing in $1500/yr towards their OWN pensions.

Since 1980, while all other city employees have been paying the full 9% of their OWN pension pickup, CTU members have only been paying 2% of the 9%. And, the city employees paying the full 9% haven't been given as many pay increases as CTU members have since 1980.

Secondly, if Lewis wants her teachers to make more money, I would suggest a cut in support staff salaries, especially as you have:

- Clerk 1's making $50,000 after 5 years of experience (with the major requirements for this position being a high school diploma or GED equivalency and one year of prior clerical experience),

- School business managers making $75,000-$95,000, and

- Former teachers working in positions under the title of 'Resource/Consultative Teacher' and making $75,000-$100,000 working in non-certified positions around schools while continuing to receive teacher pay and benefits. These positions could be staffed by non-certified staffers for half the pay and allow for teachers to have an increase in pay.

Third, many CTU members are getting an extra $2500-$3000 a year in pay to have an advance degree even if they don't use their degree in their current area. An example of this is PE teachers with a Masters in Administration. If this perk was eliminated or only paid to hose actually using their Masters, more money could be budgeted for teacher salaries.

Also, why are many CTU members the only city employees who can live outside Chicago? Currently, if a CTU member was hired before November 20, 1996, they can live anywhere they want as they're grandfathered-in with the old CPS Residency Policy. And, many CTU members get residency waivers while working in positions in areas deemed a 'special need basis', meaning they can live outside Chicago if they were hired as non-Chicago residents and their area was and continues to be considered a need for CPS. Some areas are: PE, SPED, Math, Science, Librarian, Nurse, and a few Foreign Languages.

My question is why is there a need anymore for CTU members to continue to live outside Chicago on residency waivers when the CTU has been on record saying 7000 positions have been lost by their members in recent years?

Could never understand why anyone would want to be a teacher. You know when getting hired how the pay rate is, so why complain? If you weren't happy with your choice of employment, perhaps you should have tried another field.

Read and learn who the players are and what their agenda is before you support them.

The Teacher's Union robo-called people telling them to join the anti-police protests. They are Socialists at heart. My kids go to one of the few decent public schools left, but they are so left leaning in their teachings it is ridiculous. They have so many crazy agendas they push before reading, writing and arithmetic.

I still have some individuals teachers backs, but as a whole, I see them as the enemy these days. They have it ridiculously good and they want more. Their uppers ranks are bloated with high paying do nothings. They don't fund their pensions like we do. We spend more tax dollars per kid than any other City and look at the results. Apparently all the other agendas take president over their studies. I don't want our pension woes mixed up with theirs.

Last week the Teacher's Union encouraged the kids to walk out of class to join the protests. So with all of this you tell me....do you back a teacher's strike?

Take the total operational expenses for the CPS, divide by number of students, and it comes out to something like $12,000 per year. The solution for the school mess in Chicago is staring us in the face: fund kids, not bureaucracies. Give parents a voucher for $10,000 to use at any accredited school of their choice. Taxpayers save $2,000 a head, parents get control, and kids get schools working hard to develop better programs than competitors.

I'm a teacher and have been for 13 years. There is a lot of anger geared towards us, but only a small amount is the protest and Black Friday stuff. The rest is about pensions, fair share, lazy, teach kids then strike... Yada yada yada. At the end of the day, the CTU and teachers are at a breaking point and are in a fight to keep their livelyhood that I have worked hard for and am great at. I personally don't give a shit what any of you negative people say. You don't pay my salary or my mortgage anymore than I pay yours.

Police pay more into the pension and get to collect and retire at 50 or 55 with 20 years on. We can retire with 20 years but can't collect until 63. Give me the same deal, I'll pay more. If not, screw you. We work days and have time off. Most of that time is dedicated to our work. We get minimal overtime if at all. You get overtime for all your time. Yes we know the pay scale when we became teachers, and we were also garunteed da pension. You knew nights and weekends we not yours anymore either, but yet we hear all about you sacrificing time. Same argument made by an above post.

The truth is nobody normal wants to be a cop or teacher, or anything else because of the head ache and low pay and being treated like shit by humans you serve. This justifies our pension. The only incentive on these jobs other than the fact you can save a life, or make a difference in your community everyday doing something you enjoy. Again, I applaud the CPD, but to you extremely negative people on here, I don't care if we have your support or not. I will fight for the benefit of a quality public educational system in the hopes that one day, they are funded well enough so cops and firefighters don't have to pay tuition. You are welcome. See you on the line boys and girls!

Sorry, your union and its dimwitted leader lost my support when she backed the protesters here and in Ferguson. Strike one, strike two. Second strike in three years, ring them up.

Sorry, I appreciate your personal opinion, but at the end of the day teachers don't need your support in our decision to strike if needed. It is our job to teach and do our job the best we can with what we have. You swore an oath to serve this city. Support teachers or not, you will still have to do your job as an unbiased professional. This is not personal, this is strictly business.

Is it also your job to pay for protestors to go to Ferguson , or to come here and fuck up traffic on Michigan Av?

If you are a teacher, you are exactly what is wrong with the Chicago Public School System. You can't even spell correctly. Also, if you think the anger towards your profession is mostly because of your pensions fair share, lazy teachers, etc..., then you're very wrong. Seeing your union paying for protestors to go to Ferguson or Michigan Av to protest the police makes me very angry. The next time one of your "little darlings" disrupts your English class, maybe you should have one of your paid-for protestors come help you.

I have family and friends that are teachers, with that being said I have no sympathy for them. Most of June, all of July and most of August off. Weekends off, a slew of three day weekends for various holidays, week off for thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break. Teachers want this and that, fine then they should work all year round. They can have 24 vacation days, 4 baby furlough days and 4 personal days. They can go pound sand for all I care. They work about as much as firemen do

If you really have family or friends that are teachers, then you'd know that weekends and most nights are not "off". We teach during the day, but nights and weekends are when we plan, create lessons and assessments, grade papers, contact parents, complete reports, work on specials projects for the school, etc. None of that time is paid for, as we don't get any overtime. You guys want OT for checking your Blackberry at night?? We respond to emails and work at all hours on the nights and weekends, and you don't hear us whining about it.

All we want is to ensure that our pay is not drastically cut, especially considering all of the nonsense and corruption that we have to face every day. CPS wants us to pay for their corruption and incompetence, and we have every right to fight back. We didn't create this mess.

How many teachers marched? Maybe 5 or so? If you're going to write off all teachers for that, then don't get mad when people write you off for something that one of your trigger-happy colleagues did.

There's no doubt Karen Lewis is a racist and race baiter. And, her husband John Lewis a former CPS teacher at Lane Tech is just as bad. They make a great couple.

The second in command at the CTU (Can't Teach U) is Jesse Starkey and he's a part of a communist movement in Illinois, how does that fit in with democratic process he keeps alluding to and abusing?

The question is will Lewis get Jesse Jackson to make a robocall to urge a protest for the lack of Black teachers throughout CPS while pissing off all her white CTU members?

It's funny when Lewis goes on one of her rants about the lack of Black teachers and her greedy, entitled White teachers don't say a word about it. And, these White teachers will keep quiet when Lewis says there needs to more CPS leadership and teachers who live in the urban areas. Is she implying her White teachers are breaking rules by living outside Chicago? And, by not living in Chicago, is Lewis implying her White teachers can's relate to Black and Hispanic students?

Face it White CTU members, your leader is a racist and doesn't like your kind.

Over time teachers lost a lot less compared to other city positions because they always had a strike card available, and they stick together more than other unions, that's a fact. Saying they deserve less because others get less or pay more I disagree. Like any other profession they have people that care and try hard, while others could care less. I think city leadership is to blame more than anything. Chicago has enjoyed a rubber stamp policy for decades. All the people in place are there because the great machine wants them there regardless of current events. The whole state of Illinois is a national spectical of machine insider politics from top to bottom in every way.

You can hardly call public school teachers, "professional", they just don't fall under the definition. Take away the right to strike for starters and maybe then. Every " just contract" has nothing to do with the education of the children and everything to do with more money and benefits, more then the taxpayers can afford. There are 20 people lining up for every teaching job. I hope the next strike they mayors start replacing the strikers with people who really care.

If you have a school on your beat, enforce the parking regulations around the school, strictly. If you see a car without a city sticker on it, write a ticket. If you stop a driver and they say they are a teacher and have a suburban address and not city sticker write them a citation and file a written report to the board for living outside the city. When you get a call of a fight inside the school, take your time. Do not make an arrest inside the school unless a complaint is signed by the principal and then use your discretion and judgement. Do not take orders from the school administration. They are not your friend. Karen Lewis has made racist statements in the past.

12/15/2015 12:20:00 AM
Actually it was planned that way. More time to get Springfield on board and, well, no one wants to walk a picket line in bad weather, right? These contracts have nothing to do with the welfare of the kids and everything to do with more and more for teachers . No evidence, none, that advanced degrees make a better or more effective teacher, just a reason to pay more.

When the FOP robo calls people encouraging them to march against the police, you have crossed the line. When the CTU advocates children to walk out of school to march for them, you have crossed the line. You have crossed the line when CTU advocates socialist views and spends Union dollars to pay people to march for those values. You have crossed line repeatedly in the left wing and liberal values you push on our children.

Nobody on the Department is supporting "trigger happy" policing. All officers would like a genuine investigation, not a politically motivated witch hunt. No members in the CTU are publically calling out the CTU for any of the above positions. You should start, or public opinion will not be on your side.

12/16/2015 10:20am
----

Can you please elaborate on what portion of the statement is a half truth and which portion is a lie exactly? Many people don't take the jobs because they can make more money in the private sector. Those who take the job as a "calling" are also incentivized by the promise of a pension along with other benefits. Some people in these jobs truly are doing gods work, some are just collecting pay checks. That is CPS and CPD alike. Public education should allow everyone in a community to attend their neighborhood high school without fear or issue. The CPS needs to focus resources on improvement of existing schools and not charters or schools that keep your kids out because they run a lottery or some other system to place juiced kids in and yours out. Have fun paying ten k a year for private schools. You shouldn't have to and it is the CPS and mayors fault. Not teachers. Not cops. Not city workers. Politicians broke this state and city.

Sorry that I start to feel like Joe Pesci in casino. The state is broke, pension money is gone... I don't care, fuck you pay me. I never missed a payment. But, shit everyone loves the bean, and the 606. Seriously, teachers are the problem? 55 million for Malcolm x, seriously, teachers are the problem. The city counsel paid out 506 million in settlements in three years for CPD. The CPS needs 480 million this year. I DO NOT BLAME COPS!!! I blame the politicians. But seriously teachers are the problem? Where am I wrong or half truth, or lies ya fuck stick?

Well...whens the last time any of you teachers had been shot, stabbed or killed in the line of duty? Had bones broken? Removed dead bodies? Seen child abuse in it's real form? Testified in Court? Wanted to be home with your kids on their birthdays or holidays? Wanted to take a summer vacation? YOU ARE NOT ANYWHERE NEAR LIKE US !!!!!!!! We need 29 and a day to get our full pensions. That takes an emotional and physical toll on our bodies, our minds and our families. And to the BITCH who made the trigger happy comment...GO FUCK YOURSELF !!!!

A lot more similarities than differences, actually. I'm not going to continue because I know SCC probably needs to cover more recent posts, but who do you think deals with these little darlings during the day? Who do you think calls DCFS, who do you think goes to the homes for home bound teaching? And lastly, who gets the brunt of your anger when the kids fail to read and write amidst all this craziness? The next time you feel unappreciated, just call me. I'll bring over two pieces of wood and you can nail yourself to them.
