- Across Chicago, the cop grumbles are almost as loud as the sirens.
The police discontent stems not only from increased scrutiny, including a U.S. Justice Department investigation, but new two page forms, which officers must now fill out after every stop on the street.
Not precisely true, but you can't expect the media to get it always correct, can you? We have to fill out one of these for every single individual whom we take any sort of investigatory action on. That means if you stop three or four gang bangers, each one is a separate and distinct ISR report, each taking between 15 and 25 minutes to complete, each with a receipt given unless they get some other form of paperwork (tickets, arrest). That's a hour or more off the street or off the radio.
- On the Second City Cop blog, one officer declared, “What a complete joke!” Another said he planned to “just drive around and wave at the fine, fine people in the neighborhood,” while a third predicted “I say the 500 homicide mark gets passed by 1 October!”
Um, how do these media types know these are officers? They have some sort of insight or crystal ball or program or something? The fact is, we cannot and never intend to prove anyone who posts a comment is an officer. We know people identify themselves as not cops, suburban cops, out-of-state cops, relatives of cops, a Keesing Bandit, a SpankDaddy, etc. But the comment forum is open to anyone, even media types. That doesn't make them cops by any stretch of the imagination. You'd think the media would get that.....unless there's some agenda at play here.

My wife works in Naperville and the people she works with there cannot believe she lives in Chicago they say they are "scared" to come here, but I work in the airport when I ask people where they are from they say "Chicago" I ask what area they say "Naperville,Burr Ridge,etc" when I tell them that is not Chicago they say it's easier to remember when they tell others! They want the "street cred" but are "scared" to come here, but how many work here make big money and take it home to their suburban homes? A string of three hold ups the early Friday after Thanksgiving - Please dont be fetal in Lakeview, Wrigleyville, East Lakeview, Southport. We are big part of the tax base - that support your pay and pension and benefit plans.

Some actually have mental problems that are no fault of their if they ask they get all of the help they need, but they have to ask, most do. Simple math says that if you take 15 minutes every time you stop someone, you're going to be taking a lot less action. It's likely time for citizens to be proactive and give the cops out there a helping hand; That means concealed carry permits, knowing how to use your gun and actually carrying it. This year's gotten off to a bit of a rough start for a few criminals, they may learn some manners if a pair of them get ventilated every week by a shop owner or good citizen they are trying to hurt or rob.

You are sadly mistaken. The ACLU does NOT have the power to "drop" the ISR requirement. It is part of Illinois Senate Bill 1304, "The Police and Community Relations Improvement Act," effective January 1, 2016. The ISR and the search-receipt is now "set in stone," required under Illinois Law, and it applies to every single police department in Illinois, not just Chicago. It also creates a state-wide database for all street stops in every Illinois city, town, and hamlet.
After the ACLU's "triumph" in getting this legislation passed, do you seriously think they will ever reverse themselves and ask the politicians in Springfield to re-write the law to eliminate the ISR and the database? That idea is laughable!
The ISR will probably be with us for decades to come.

Why would you think to do "stop and frisks" in areas of low crime? Wouldnt the stats tell you that, based on the numbers, these areas have little to no crime, so focusing efforts to prevent crime, that statistically does not exist, would be a waste of time, effort and resources?
If you have areas of high crime, based on the stats and numbers, wouldnt it be logical to focus your efforts in those areas, in order to potentially reduce crime? I would think so, but "Civil Leaders", Revruns and ACLU attorneys disagree. The innocent in those areas, should this experiment not pan out, should bring this up with those people, (hopefully it wont happen, but....stats and all....)if things go south. Their is a massive issue with accountability in some areas. When the city has the biggest checkbook around, and isnt held responsible for opening it, criminal attorneys would be foolish to not dip into that pile of coins, like Scrooge McDuck.
This certainly appears to be a "damned if you do" situation for the police. Just know that there are tons of people who appreciate your efforts. We want you to feel safe. We appreciate(d) your efforts in the past, but under today's new conditions, do what you can to do your jobs, and stay safe. Its not worth you losing your jobs anymore. Plenty of people can see whats really going on.

Citizen here. I dont think you fully understand the CPD's predicament here. While they certainly WANT to prevent crime in your area, they now have their hands tied. They cant perform the things they used to do.
I would hope that you have your firearms card and a CCL, because that, based on this weeks efforts on the south side robberies, seem to be more effective at preventing crime than asking CPD to break their own laws they must follow and risk their careers and lives.

I live in a white community in Chicago, not affluent but predominately white. You will be hard pressed to match the numbers in a white community compared to a black community. 2 a.m. in a black community is like 2 p.m. in other communities. There are no open air drug markets in my community, nobody hanging out in the streets blaring shit music, drinking vodka from a plastic cup, no "private clubs" on every corner. And nobody getting shot every 3 minutes. I also don't have crack heads roaming the streets in my community looking for any opportunity to make a buck and so they can buy drugs. The reason these things take place in the black community is because it is tolerated and deemed part of "black culture". Stop acting like animals and you won't be treated like one, it's as simple as that.

Yes, I see it now: the police stop just about every street stop and search. The people are pleased. They now love the police and dance with them in the streets. The people now call the police with information about crimes and volunteer to be witnesses and testify in court. There is now a new partnership with the police and community. The gang members and other sociopaths are now afraid of being outed by the community and they give up their criminal ways and all is good in the community.Crime plunges and gang members are now staying in school and getting good grades and actually graduating and getting jobs. I m a citizen to be clear. I think "stop and frisk" in bad hoods or even north hoods is a solid policing. I have noted in my area and have observed - 2 non neighborhood youth drop pants to shock a young recent college graduate at a Walgreen's. Learned nurse friend robbed out side of the Advocate ER. A string of three hold ups the early Friday after Thanksgiving - Please dont be fetal in Lakeview, Wrigleyville, East Lakeview, Southport. We are big part of the tax base - that support your pay and pension and benefit plans.
I think you are under estimating the silent majority support of your efforts. I have had an alarm system, 4,500 investment in Medeco commercial locks/deadbolts. Is a foid/cc required to walk the family dog? I'm guessing so.

Police work is nothing like it was when I came on the job 34 years ago. I was glad to retire and get out. My Son gets out of the Army the end of this year. He wanted to follow in my footsteps and become a cop as well. I told him to forget about that and to consider being a fireman instead. You're far less likely to get sued, shot, stabbed, attacked, or falsely accused of being a racist. All of my cop friends seem to be telling their kids the same thing. I weep when I think about the quality of candidate area PDs will be getting in the future.

Back in the 70's, when NU's football team had the longest loosing streak in history, we had a ninckname for the Medill School of Journalism students - MEDILLDOS!
The majority of the police do their job by: showing up to work, answering their jobs, doing a few parkers, occasional mover, and backing up each other. The "workers" who needed that activity for the glorified spots (tact, management, units) to make themselves and/or their bosses look good will have to rethink whether its truly worth it. The good people that live in high crime areas will suffer. The majority of police will get paid more to do less, not bad at all. This will take the life out of the top 10-20% of the department that works and will take the fear of the police out of the criminal's mind. Adjust and move on....help those you can and move safely one day at a time to retirement and make friends along the way. Its not what it used be and it never will be again. Stay safe!

NBC 5 is not the paragon of journalism. The days of real reporting by icons such as Huntley & Brinkley or Floyd Kalber (WMAQ) are over. The Chi-town rising fiasco, which was constantly hyped when Carol Marin was not urinating on the CPD, is the new standard. Endless self-promotion, hyping the latest drivel in a 5 second "news at 10 ad" and calling a group of 50 protesters a large crowd is the order of the day. If and when a reporter asks you a question - merely state "Sorry, I don't watch your channel or read your rag" and walk away. If they persist, tell them to direct their question to GooglyBoogly at News Affairs.
Verifying your sources is out the window. Stating that an "officer said on SCC" is a prime example of spreading unverified rumors which is far more important than reporting the facts.

Saw it. There was a lot of spin, but even the lawyer's version makes it pretty clear the offender wasn't intentionally assassinated.)
Two things jumped out at me: 1) the lawyer asserted the kid exited his car (no, he exited the vehicle he STOLE) and 2) Ponce just nods and smiles and asks NO hard questions. The man is no longer anything but a hairstyle who inhales audibly.

I saw the comment they were referring to about waving. I read it as someone who is not a cop, nor had seen these forms before. I believe his comments were, "I would not do these forms," and " I would just wave". There was a reason they did not post the actual comment, just paraphrased it.
