Suspending a Windfall?

  • llinois lawmakers are considering suspending late fees for license plate renewals that have caused a windfall for the state after it stopped sending reminders to residents to save money.

Not mailing the notices has caused a dramatic increase in fees. The Associated Press reported Thursday that drivers paid more than $2.7 million in fines from Jan. 1 through Feb. 22. That's $1.2 million more than a year ago.
So Illinois saves money by not sending out renewals, meaning people are supposed to responsible for the own renewals. This results in a savings of nearly half-a-million per month. The fines for NOT being responsible rack up an additional $1.3 million in additional revenue, meaning Illinois was getting nearly $2 million extra.

Well, we can't have that!
  • One proposed measure would suspend the $20 fine for motorists until the state ends its 8-month-old budget deadlock. The Secretary of State's office stopped mailing reminders in October to save an estimated $450,000 a month on postage.

Rep. Jaime Andrade is sponsoring the legislation. The Chicago Democrat says the surprise cost is unfair to residents living on their own tight budgets.
Because actually being responsible for your own life, actions, car, etc is just sooooo difficult. It's not like you don't walk by the rear plate of your car two, three, ten times a day. So of course, in Illinois, a state $100 billion in debt, it makes perfect sense to forgo actual revenue.

Outrageous. Rep. Andrade is Outrageous....as is this stupid, dumb and crazy idea. Right, we all must take our own responsibility and live our lives fully.

My windfall was eliminated by a piece of shit Illinois politician named Rostenkowski . After working in the private sector since age 16 I got into the police business with 40 quarters of social security and that fat fuck , for the good of all Illinois , reduced my potential benefits drastically because I qualify for a government pension . Now it looks like I might get fucked out of the pension benefits I paid for as well . I know that many of these criminals who call themselves politicians have plan B homes on other continents . If they cheat me out of my pension , they should pray to their god that I don't have enough gold to find them . I am not alone in my thinking .

Quick, what color is the sticker on your rear license plate right now?

Like people don't have 10,000 other things on their minds as they try to cope with this corrupt city, county, state and country. This sounds like just another bit of corruption as we have been paying to get these notifications all along.

Maybe there will be a box to check off to add a dollar if you want mail or email notification. Maybe another dollar for refugee/immigrant licenses.

This sounds like something some lawyer will sue over and the state will have to give back all that $$$$.

You're wrong on this SCC. Do you get reminders for your bills every month? I do. Is there a fee built into the registration renewal fee to send out a reminder? You bet your ass. If the state can't send out a reminder, they shouldn't reap any additional benefit. There is already a punishment in place for those blow off or casually forget to renew and it's called a traffic citation. And no, I have not been subject to this late fee or fine as it may be.

450K$ for mailing renewal notices seems high? What is cost per individual mailing? Most important is who is benefiting from mailing contract?

You have to start back-up the renewal reminders. I am always on the side of my vehicle, what does the back of the vehicle look like? I need you to spend more money on me and not accept any late fees. Why must I relie on myself to take care of myself when I have the fine State of Illinois to do that.

How about the ivc for the expired plate? Or the parking ticket for the expired plate? That going away too? Yes it is too much to ask folks once a year to walk back to their car and look at the plate. The real catch is the DL.....expired more than 6 m. Automatic suspension

It's helpful I guess for the clueless people who can't seem to function. I don't need a mailed "reminder" to go by a sticker
At $450,000 a month......that's what is sad. That money could be used for so much other necessary things like pension payments, late bills.

This is exactly one of the reasons this state is so broke: enablers who won't let anybody be responsible for their own business. Nothing but handouts!

This is bullshit. I looked at my plate. Saw it was going to expire. Got out my prior year's registration. Used the numbers on the old registration online to get my sticker. How hard is that ?

Fuck everybody! Take responsibility for your own bills. If you need a reminder to renew your license plates tough shit. Same goes for the city sticker. Keep abreast of when they're due and pay your bill on time or pay the penalty.

This is so funny. I went to SOS friday for plate renewal and women in line next to
me argued why she was being charged late fee for plate that expired in January 2016.

So clerk just charged her flat $101.00 with no late fee. Where is late fee being added?

Agreed. Thank you. I'm responsible enough for ten people. I pay taxes at so many different levels it's ridiculous. I have four cars in our family. I'd need a special calendar to keep track of plates, stickers, emissions. Fuck the G. I want a reminder.

The sticker has a month and year it expires. Is that the first day of the month, or the last day of the month that it expires?

To renew, one is supposed to have the registration card that came with the sticker and then enter the registration ID and PIN online to renew. Who the hell saves that thing? Unless you're carrying more than 10 people, you don't really need it in the vehicle, so it ends up in a pile, in the garbage, etc.

Why should I pay extra to renew online because I use a credit card or eCheck? Both of those methods save the State $$$ because they don't have to process the payment manually, so by my reasoning I ought to get a discount for paying that way. But I don't, and the fees are too high already, so fuck it - they get a check they can play with.

Except that I can't pay by check because I have no idea what address to send the check to, nor the amount to pay! And I need that damned registration card that got lost or tossed because I hadn't needed it for decades as the State sent me a reminder.

So you know what? Screw it. If the State isn't going to send me a reminder with the amount, isn't going to make it easy for me to figure out what I'm supposed to pay, isn't going to tell me where to send a check to, and is going to charge me more for paying on line - then the hell with it. Let it expire. I'm also not about to go waste hours standing in line at the DMV to get a sticker and risk getting to the front of the line only to be told that I need some kind of bullshit ID to prove who the fuck I am - when the damn car is outside in the parking lot!

Until the State gets their shit together, they shouldn't be able to collect fines for not doing something that's ostensibly of ZERO value to the taxpayer anyway.

Once you pay $120 to register the friggin plates when you get the car, why do they need $$$ every year for plates? The plates should remain valid until the car is reported stolen, scrapped, or sold. If you need new plates, they ought not to be able to charge more than it costs to make and send them to you.

Imagine the arrogance of that prick Rostenkowski. He is surrounded by government employees everyday, cuts the benefits that they earned and paid for and thinks that none of them will blow the whistle on the dirty little game he had going with the Congressional Post Office. It blows my mind that he collected his $134,000 Congressional pension while in jail and was the honored speaker at the dedication of the Lincoln Library in Springfield. The ground around his grave must be awfully soggy.

Senators Obama and Hillary Clinton both co-sponsored bills that would remove this injustice but these bills never went anywhere, they never were meant to succeed.

I recently retired, and I should get $614.00 in S.S. benefits. I get nothing, zero, nothing. But Illegal Immigrants can get....

Here's an idea. The Illinois Tollway Authority Automatically replenishes my I-Pass account from a designated credit card every time my account get below a certain level. Why not do the same for license plates. Unless otherwise notified they will charge a set amount from your card, plus service fee when the plates are up for renewal. A special type of license plate or sticker might have to be issued.

They will never do it.
The Currency Exchange lobby is too strong.

If you are worried about getting notified by the SOS when your license plates renewal is due, the SOS has a website where you can get a renewal notice emailed to you.
Takes a minute to sign up. Did all my cars and motorcycle.

Here's the thing SCC, if they would have given notice of the change then fine. Problem is that all of a sudden there are no reminders. I would say that yes, we all see our rear plate but honestly I don't think many people pay much attention until they notice that it's already expired. This is a shameless money grab by Illinois politicians. If the credit card companies just one day decided to stop mailing, and emailing statements you know most of us would let the due date pass and not realize it until a week later. Someone piss in your Cheerios this morning?

Ah yes, once again, responsible people are held to a higher standard. You get NOTHING for your taxes. The government doesn't reinvest in infrastructure, roads, etc. They don't even pay into your pensions. They give it to people who don't work, never will, and piss the rest of it away. And now they don't even have enough money to send you a simple reminder to keep your vehicles current. Yet, you blindly accept the complete and utter incompetence of government by stepping up to the plate. So proud of all of you.

Coming next...Gas & Electric company saving money by surprise "find it yourself" billing. Any delays of payment will be solely due to you being some sort of derelict, as you obviously cannot figure out how to make timely unannounced payments across multiple accounts. Yearly billings such as a vehicle tax? Should be even easier to keep track of as there is less of them. You irresponsible clod, after 80+ years of mailed renewal forms from the Secretary of State office arriving at your home...the lack of a renewal this year and resulting fine is YOUR fault

The reason there was no late fee is the SOS only charges a late fee for plates thast have been expired over 30 days. Plates expire the last day of the month so the plates expired 31 Jan 2016 and because they were renewed in February they were not past the 30 days

Late August, early September of 2015, the media reported repeatedly that the notices were being discontinued.
That was the time to mark your wall calendar or your phone app with your renewal dates.
Still need a reminder, ask the Sec of State to send you an email (free).
