Crime Continues

  • Three robberies of bicyclists along a portion of The 606 / Bloomingdale Trail in the Northwest Side in recent weeks on the have prompted a community alert from the police.

The robberies all occurred at night. Each time, someone riding a bike on the popular cycling and walking trail was tackled or placed into a headlock by two to four teenagers or young men who robbed them and ran off, according to the police.

    They happened around 11:30 p.m. Feb 19 at 3200 W. Bloomingdale, around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at 2542 W. Bloomingdale and around 10:30 p.m. Thursday at 2558 W. Bloomingdale, the police said.
A week of Capt. John F or Sgt. Dave S riding a bicycle up there would clear this right up....if you know what we're saying.

Stop making those guys out to be the greatest cops we've ever had...any decent tact team could solve that mess if they actually put some effort into it. There was a time when cops would take crime patterns occurring on their beats or in their districts of patrol personally, and put in the work needed to resolve the issue. It looks like that day has definitely come and go...just go put in a 'special unit' request to go look into it. Some things never change.

Off topic but can someone please define "loitering" for me? I know the term to mean stand or wait around idly or without apparent purpose. The department does not define this term. The definition and examples presented in the gang/narcotic loitering ordinances state that the person must be flashing gang signs or yelling gang slogans or any other type of disruptive behavior. Just standing on the corner isn't enough for dispersals tact and sat guys.

I'm not one bit surprised. I read an interview with someone from the Park District pretty much blaming a cyclist because she said it was after it had closed (11-something?), which is fine, but it seemed to be just after it closed, not in the middle of the night. I haven't taken my kids because I'm just not sure it's that safe during daylight hours - I feel things are just not reported in the media.

I would like to ask the officers who work there during the day, am I just being paranoid, or is it safe enough to take my kids (no bikes, probably) during the day or on the weekend? It looks nice when I drive under it, or when I see it from the Blue Line.

Give credit where credit is due. Disregard the pizza man decoy incidents of both JF and DS. During their respective careers both were truly among the CPD's greatest street cops. While their most well known incidents may remind some of a reincarnation of the late and great Frank Pape, both were among Chicago's (very) Finest.

My contemporaries may say that I probably hold the career record for well over a thousand felony arrest incidents for index crimes, So what? I consider myself blessed in that I never caused great bodily injury or the well-deserved justifiable deaths of any two-legged scum. In armed robberies-in-progress and other violent crimes, the gunmen wisely decided to drop their weapons and surrender. My closest call was my very first tour of duty on the job when my partner saved our lives by shooting a cop-killer wannabe in 011 on the midnights. Aside from calling in our 10-1, this then rookie was clueless, my weapon still holstered. (R.I.P. to the late A'Roterick "Ronnie" McLaughlin, a Walter Payton lookalike and a genuine life saver).

If the CPD were legit, John would have been Chief of Detectives and ultimately Superintendent with "Second Deputy" David as his first deputy. Then again, I believe that both men were wise enough to refuse the job, even if offered. An office job was not in their DNA. They both craved the mean streets. I hold both guys with the utmost respect.

A little known fact about JF: After we made detective together back in 1970, John was shot in an incident in 019. His partner MM shot and killed the gunman. John was on crutches for a while but the CPD never even awarded him the purple ribbon. Even then, John is so damn modest that I doubt that he would even wear it on his uniform.

Now in this current anti-police climate, I'm certain that the last place you will find John and David is on the Bloomingdale Trail.

Enjoy your retirement, guys!

I don't know what it's like on a cold day, but I was on the Bloomingdale Trail one weekday morning in September, and passed like 20 people. In reasonably warm weather, it's safer than the average sidewalk in the area. If you live in Lincoln Park or Sauganash and you're scared of the rest of the city, then don't bring your kids. But for anyone who lives anywhere near there, yeah, it's safe in the daytime.

3/07/2016 07:22:00 AM

Hey!

Don't go painting this picture with broad brush-strokes!

"...a large majority of black officers I've encountered on the job..."
And by your own statement, the sample size of your "large majority"
is way too small to issue a blanket statement like that.

Not criticizing, just saying it could've perhaps been phrased another way.

Let cooler heads prevail on this.

It's somewhat disheartening that Aldo Brown sought "solace" in the
arms of one like Mary Mitchell.

We wonder WHO pushed this?

Those who have the gift of introspection would take her article
with SEVERAL grains of salt.

At the end of the day she is STILL a Police Hater extraordinaire
with a forum by which she can disseminate her hatred with
little to no actual oversight, rebuttal or pain of compelled
retraction when she REALLY gets beside herself.

Mary Mitchell is just that...
Mary Mitchell.

Her column, her rules, her context, her world-view.
We can't help but wonder how much of what Ofc. Brown
Actually said was taken out of context to meet word count
restraints and mesh with an agenda?

Society owes Aldo Brown a debt of gratitude
which is actually more than anything
Mary Mitchell has garnered.

Really hate to see good Policemen get throw
to the wolves like this. As far was what transpired
during the arrest. None of us were there and no one
can rightfully speak for what Ofc. Brown saw and felt.

It is so dangerous that powers that be have come to
depend so heavily on video cameras.

"Catch The Police doing 'wrong,'" is the default setting
of the weak-minded, intellectually disinterested and the
mentally lazy when it comes to recorded use of force
incidents.

It seems there is no longer room at the table
for totality of circumstances.

Really hoping Aldo comes out of this at least
somewhat intact.

Say what you want about it, but if you were smart enough to buy property over there 10 years ago you at minimum tripled your investment. If you bought one 3 flat along the trail in 2007 between Kedzie and Sacramento, for say 100k the land alone is worth 300k. If a greystone 450k. Never using your own money, borrowed from bank, with tenants paying your mortgage way better than deferred comp.
