Rats Again

Rahm's been cutting the pest control budget for years and guess what happened?
  • Lincoln Park residents are concerned about a rat problem in their neighborhood. First there was video of the rat trying to get back inside a neighborhood clinic, and now there are concerns about upcoming demolition and construction.

A pesky little rodent persistently trying to get into an Old Town urgent care facility, despite efforts to gently sweep him out, is now the most famous rat in Chicago.

"He clearly didn't want to hurt the rat," says resident Joey Kaigler. "Didn't want to close the door on him."

While that little guy is getting most of the attention lately, there are apparently plenty of his brothers and sisters roaming the streets and alleys of Chicago.
Rahm's been doing the same thing to the police budget, carrying on Daley's tradition of running the Department on the cheap. Guess what's been happening to the crime numbers?

History lesson 103

Before FOP was elected by the police officers, we had to beg for raises. King Richard Daley never would let the police even talk about unionizing. No time and half, no money pay for overtime, rotating watches, everyone outside of 11th and State was on a 6 and 2 work schedule. You were an indentured serf to the jerk on the 5th floor of City Hall. You went to a zero balance on time due when you came back from furlough. You had no choice if you did not have the seniority for a full 28-day furlough. If you had time due on the books, you had to use it to make the furlough the full 28 days. No ifs ands or buts. If you did not have time on the books some bosses would make you work some of your days off prior to your furlough so you had time on the books. This way you were gone for the full period and they would not make any adjustments to the monthly work sheets.

When Jane Byrne became mayor, she allowed the state law to be changed to allow us to unionize. But we were still saddled with bosses that were hold overs from Dick Daley the 1st. They owed their promotions to the politicians. They threaten us at roll calls what would happen to us if we unionized. But FOP won. But no representation would have won if the bosses did not come out to roll calls and threaten us. John Dineen became our first FOP president. John came to the job with a wealth of experience having just served as the National FOP President for three years. But that experience was wasted because of the moron bosses and city representatives he had to sit across the table from. The most minor detail was a war. But we hammered out a contract. And each contract since we built upon the prior one. And now some of the politicians who have voted on those contracts finally are starting to read them.

Today we have a lot educated people on the job now with no life experience. Raised by helicopter parents. Stroke them a little and they think they are special but too afraid to stand up to a boss when he’s wrong. When we went over two years without the city working on a contract no one wrote a ticket. We have never gone back to those levels since. But you see the youngsters writing ISR’s to keep some merit boss happy. And they may be putting their freedom possibly in jeopardy. You have to police safe but you also have to police smart. Meritorious promotions have killed this job.

Next: There has never been a peaceful transition from one FOP president to the next. But we survived. But what was done to Shields was criminal.

Just a few weeks ago while cruising through the alley behind a high profile Michigan Ave building near the river we saw two maintenance guys taking the trash out of a overhead service door. One ran out the door to the dumpster with the trash while the other stood guard at the door with a rake beating back literally hundreds of rats that where fighting their way to get into the building. It was a WTF site to see . . . kinda like Europe and their migrant situation.

The way the rodent problem was explained to me, years ago, is this. So many old buildings, many wooded, have been torn down, and replaced. Obviously, many rodents lived in those structures. They had to take to the streets, and alleys. Secondly, all those "Animal Lover's" feed the rodents. Oh No, not directly, but indirectly. They feed their dogs, cats, and "Whatever", high protein Pet Food. The "Pet's" system cannot even process it all before it passes through it's system. So the good "Pet Owner" picks up the waste, and throws it into the "Garbage"! Who, or Whom do you think has ready access to that "Garbage"? You don't just have rodents, You have "Super Rats" !

FOP has not done ANYTHING in the face of questionable and impulsive administrative orders and policies which are generated on a weekly basis. Simple contract violations are going unchallenged while union leaders make excuses and allow management to ignore basic contractual agreements. The rank and file have been slowly walked backwards to that same work environment described above. In fact, you cannot even get a 28 day furlough now, even using your comp time and BFDs. The lack of manpower has forced shortened furloughs, increased the denial of time due, and promoted officers working through their days off. Management is still allowed to force activity and retaliate through denial of time, changing start time, watch selection, and reassignment of work partners. Pay and benefits are also being diminished. Contracts are allowed to expire for YEARS with no consequence. Any raise in pay is always preceded or followed by increase in taxes, fees, permits, or any multitude of city revenue generators, basically negating any cost of living increase you might have had. Pension payments are allowed to go into delinquency with no penalty, while future security of the fund is consistently questioned. Medical costs have risen with more of the financial burden falling on the officers. IOD claims are going unpaid with collection agencies going after officers with bills the city fails to pay. Job related education and training seminars are practically nonexistent. Training facilities, equipment, and software are dilapidated and antiquated. Meanwhile, our lackluster union has remained silent through all of it, purposely. And we are supposed to believe that things have improved?

For those of you who sit at home, don't care and don't vote, I understand your frustrations, but elections have consequences. Clinton in 2016

You are kidding right? Clinton hates the police, and white privilege is a myth perpetrated by the Civil Rights Industry, a compliant media and the idiots in academia and Hollywood. I am a white male who's family didn't come to this country until after WW1. They were dirt poor and didn't speak English when they got here. They never owned slaves or oppressed African Americans, but they worked hard and made sure that their children went to school and had a better life than they did. You can do it too the opportunities are there but you have to "want too" It takes work and effort, which many people don't want to expend. If you are so concerned about BLM what are you doing to stop the slaughter of young African Americans by other young African Americans that occurs in the Black community daily? All lives matter!

Every sanitation textbook written in the past hundred years says to "put garbage in metal cans with tight-fitting lids."

...so look at the mess we have. Soft plastic garbage totes with holes gnawed in them, ineffective flip-up lids, or can just tipped over and piles of crap just tossed in the general vicinity, stacks of thin plastic trash bags, wide-open dumpsters...suburbs too.

Giant rat cafeteria.

Needs new containers, a huge cleanup, and mass bait drops from B-52s. I think NYC is trying a new bait that messes up the reproductive cycle.

Also needs citizens who won't just throw their trash out the window into the yard, or leave their poodle s__t laying around for rat snacks.

As someone posted here, rats also arrive in truckloads of fill dirt for construction projects. Dig 'em up here, move 'em over there.

I hate to say it people but the race for State Attorney's is between Alvarez and Foxx. More doesn't have a chance and a Republican will be elected when hell freezes over. I don't like it either, I wish we had better choices, but that is the way it is. While I respect the opinions of those who disagree, Foxx is the worst of the bunch. Alvarez, though far from perfect is the better choice. I will hold my nose and vote for her.

Nobody cares about the internal politics of FOP anymore. Once Shields was removed, further damage was prevented.

Maybe the rats could be caught and served at luncheons for our Mayor and his fine co-horts, the aldermen of this great city.

NEVER understood the allure of these floppy-topped, tippy-assed
plastic garbage carts that some Daley connected asshole is making
a killing on.

Rats and other critters gnaw through them,
two legged assholes steal them (a fucking PITA
for people who live on a corner) and they're a menace
because some asshole is always setting them on fire
and some poor slob's garage goes up in flames...

My garage almost caught on fire after some unknown person set my garbage can on fire. Luckily, I have great neighbors who called right away, and great beat cops and cfd who work in this area.

@@@@@

Yes Shields was part of the problem but most of the damage was done by the City-Wide guys trying to backstab Shields. That's why the State Lodge settled with him. That's why Chicago is still in court with him. That cancer is still around and ready to fester again. More heads to roll as soon as the lawsuit is over or so I've been told. Is Frank a dead man walking?

024 has a big rodent problem. The mice are so comfortable that they run the halls and front desk freely. In the afternoon the babies play freely. The mice have more courage than the 3rd watch LT.
