Teachers are Walking

Just a prediction here, but they're going out in April:
  • The Chicago Teachers Union will gear up to strike as soon as April 1, if Chicago Public Schools follows through on its threat to unilaterally cancel the 7 percent pension pickup it has made for decades, a top union official said Monday.

CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey made the comment just hours after 62 members of his union were laid off, a fraction of the number the union had feared.

As the school district has ramped up pressure on the union — via layoffs — to sign off on a contract proposal to replace the one that expired last June, the CTU countered with its own threat of withholding labor in the middle of the second semester, earlier than previous predictions when parents might still support a teacher walkout.
Another prediction - they're going to get a lot less support this time around. They only have to be more popular than Rahm, but that might be a stretch.

I know that teachers, especially in CPS, have a tough time. I admire your dedication to the children. With that being said, I was surprise at how much you contribute to your pension. We put into our pension anywhere from 9% to 10% and the city contributes 1.5% to 2%. We do not receive Social Security benefits (SS benefits are greatly reduced if we did). That being said, IF the city DID pay into social security, they would be paying 6.75% and so would I. The city's costs would go up and mine would go down. However, I have a pension, which has very often been raided by the politicians as their person slush fund and my pension is in jeopardy because of it. YOU SHOULD BE PAYING SIMILARLY IN TO YOUR PENSION AS I HAVE INTO MINE! I have no sympathy for you on this regard.

Additionally, it would probably be in your best interest if you removed the communist head of your union for her throne. She is certainly no friend of yours and as long as she is the president of your union, I will find it very difficult to support you on this pension issue.

Time for all these people to tighten up their belts like everyone else has in this state.

The magic money waterfall has run dry. No one wants to admit that and no one want's to take "no raise", let alone a cut.

So what is the alternative? Layoffs.

Good luck trying to find other jobs in Illinois. When they see the "job market" that all other Illinois residents have had to deal with, they will be saying, "Oh, I should have agreed to take less." Too late.

Oh and don't forget to vote Democrat in the upcoming Primary.

Thanks, CPS and CTU. I'd really prefer to stay at my CPS teaching job that I'm fairly good at - despite all the clueless people who'd like to blame me for my students' low test scores. The contract offer made by the city wasn't great, but it could have been worse. However, the CTU's crusading bargaining team think they can negotiate a fix to Chicago's financial corruption. Plus, they made a serious misstep in holding hands with the Black Lives Matter folks. Stupid beyond belief. Thus, I've got my resume ready for the suburban districts - if I haven't been too poisoned by CPS. At this point I'd rather bag groceries than teach in Chicago.

A head of the school system, on her way to prison, a financial manager in prison, a Police Superintendent who did major damage to the Department, and then was fired; at what point does somebody pull the plug on this arrogant little suburban Putz? I can support the teachers with their cause because they have a true bargaining unit with a "strike" clause in their contract. How many parents have jobs they have to go whereby "junior" is dropped off from 8:15-4:30 mon-fri and is babysat. They are the first wave of contract negotiation that spills over to CPD and CFD. What roasts my stones is the CTU magazine with teaching McDonald expose'. As a police officer that was bullshit. Having Karen Lewis tell her flock to go march with Father Phlegm and his blacklivesmatter crew on Michigan Ave. to disrupt everything is idiocy to say the least. That was bullshit too. We all know that Lewis has it out for the Rahmfather, but to draw a line in the sand between Police and Teachers is detrimental. It does more damage than good. Karen Lewis has to rethink her strategy with the Rahmfather and to not divide us like she did. The streets and sans, cfd, cps strikes are all real of the past.

It too bad the CPD does not have a retirement option like the Thrift Savings Plan that Federal workers have. This is a 401K that is totally outside of Government control and is managed by the large private pension plan actuaries. Presently is it BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, N.A. My investments have done very well over the years. This fund was instituted during the Reagan administration. One of the interesting things they did was too keep the Congress's hands off the fund is in an emergency they could borrow from the fund but that immediately after the funding emergency the money had to be paid back with interest at market rates.

Although I agree the teachers "should" have been paying their share into the system the WHOLE time, that wasn't the agreement. That would be like what the city is trying to do to us, change the rules in the middle of the game. Sorry, when I came on the deal was I pay 9% and the city pays 9%. How about they come through now and say all coppers pay 18% and the city will still pay 9%, would you agree to that? So, I guess the teachers union does have a point.

There four certified teachers for every job opening in Cook County.Give vouchers to every one and let them put their kids in a school that the parents want, a school that will actually teach them something. I am tired of the public teachers blaming the kids for the lack of education. So they are saying that black kids cannot learn? I hope not. If you listen to Karen Lewis she blames the white teachers for not relating to the black children. These are two questions that need to be looked at further but everyone is too afraid to approach the subject. Time to sit down and really look at the problem. The problem is that the CTU has failed to communicate the proper value of the pension pick-up since Day One. Since 1981, that pickup has resulted in a 3.75% increase in net pay EVERY YEAR for CTU members. 1981 was the only year in which the pick-up was given IN LIEU OF a raise.

Since then, raises (and fairly good ones, considering step + COLA can amount to as much as 7% raise in one year) were given every year since then on top of the pick-up. Over the years, teachers grew accustomed to the benefit and therefore felt entitled to it for perpetuity. Many CPS teachers retired after spending an entire career contributing only 2% towards their retirements, or 1/3 of what most taxpayers contribute for SSI alone.

https://www.illinoispolicy.org/steps-and-lanes-understanding-how-chicago-public-school-teachers-get-multiple-pay-raises-each-year/

Each CTU contract specifically states the pension pickup is only good for the term of the contract. It is not a permanent benefit.

http://contract.ctunet.com/article:583

If CTU members perceived this as such, then it is union management's problem for not properly communicating to their members. CTU leaders are to blame. Unfortunately, accountability is not one of their strong points.

Here's what the 7% has cost the taxpayers of Chicago through the years:

Well stands to reason that they shouldn't look to the city to pay their share of the contribution. If they failed to do so once why would they do it now? 7% is a lot for taxpayers to pick up. They should pay their 9.5% like all other public employees.

The CTU will not be able to have their teachers strike April 1st as CPS has their balls in the vise now. May 15th is the earliest teachers could strike as they have to go through a process and file an unfair labor practice with the stae first over the 7% pensiuon deductions to be taken out of their paychecks starting with the next paycheck.

So, what does a strike do this late in the year like this? Absolutely nothing! Nothing, but, give graduating high school seniors a break in days they need to graduate, especially as they have to graduate on pre-planned days already because of the money involved in renting out facilities.

What are the issues others than 7% pensions contribution teachers will have to pay now that they're been skating on paying in the past? Classroom sizes, charters?

The CTU and teachers are going to end up losers in this deal, especially with CPS already reporting 300 schools are underutilized and most will close soon, meaning more teaching positions wil be lost.

Dumbass teachers!!!

On it's face?
The teachers have a tough job trying to educate the
mostly uneducable.

You can't put pottery made from shit in a kiln and expect fine, sturdy,
useful earthenware to emerge.

Even Rahm has said: "They're not gonna learn anything anyway."

(Funny... Everything a Policeman says is scrutinized, contested &
protested by the media, the Feds, the ACLU and the #blm mob
while the North Shore Shit-Ass rides free and easy.)

With that said...
The teachers union have massively overplayed their hand and
and will find themselves standing alone for their cynical political
alignment with the likes of "Lemon Record" et al...

"Why bother showing any solidarity with the cops?
We don't need them..."

...Until you do.
"Why are you guys so pissed-off?
We're all in this together, right?"

The BIGGER question is, have the teachers been educating the children in all this time? Based on test scores and graduation rates, I don't think so.

CTU's antics are going to backfire on their members, big time. As a teacher in CPS, the sentiment among many teachers is a growing frustration with CTU's moralizing over long term fixes for a corrupt Chicago and their extremely misguided support of the Black Lives Matter movement. They've further continued down the rabbit hole with marches that clog traffic and protests outside of Bank of America. Teachers do not want to strike. Had CTU's ad hoc "Big Bargaining Team" not dismissed the contract offer out of hand, members would have voted to accept it. Successful, competent teachers will be leaving as soon as they can for greener pastures.

I remember the last time they walked out. Many on this blog were saying we should stick by the CTU. They were negotiating basically the same points they are now. The opinions here were about 75/25 divided in favor for us standing by a fellow union. I was among those disagreeing. Warning of the dangerous animal that a union can become to a city like Chicago. What's changed? Why now is there such a call here for the CTU to fold? Because their leadership is extremely liberal? You didn't already know that the last time when you were crying "fuck Rahm, go get him Karen"! No, I think you've jumped on the bandwagon once again. It was popular here to say "yea CTU" in their fight against the city and now it's popular here to say "damn you liberals, pay your fair share". It's the same then as it now. Teachers should not be averaging $75k a year (that figure is from the CTU themselves). If they wanna work year round like other adults, then maybe. The bottom line is the vast majority only work 8 months a year but are paid as if they work 12. Put them on an hourly wage. Contribute to your own pension. Stop using the children's' education as a bargaining chip like the scum politicians you say you're so different from. YOU'RE OFF OVER 3 MONTHS OUT OF 12. Even if they worked a full year, a teacher should not be making the same as a first responder. Those are some of the issues. Not the absurd support of blm being trumpeted by their leadership. Get off the bandwagon and bring up some real points.

And if your contract called for the city to put in 7% because something else was given in negotiations for that, you'd be insisting the city pay what it agreed to.

Because $12,000 a year for fucking tuition so my kid can get the same exact education with bullshit religion classes is a waste of fucking money. If all you idiot city workers would send your kids to your neighborhood public school, the schools would be a paradise. Instead you and your wife both work, you work all the overtime you can get, your kids don't know you and hate you, and your health deteriorates. "I am tired of the public teachers blaming the kids for the lack of education. So they are saying that black kids cannot learn?"

Nobody's saying that black kids can't learn, dumbass. Where are you from? Here's why CPS kids are behind:
1. Big cities have a lot of concentrated poverty and broken homes.
2. Kids from these homes enter kindergarten way behind kids whose homes are not poor or broken.
3. All kids of all colors make about 1 year of academic progress per year.
4. By the time kids from poor and broken homes are old enough to take standardized tests, they don't do as well as kids whose homes are not poor or broken.

Although the charters are great at number manipulation, there's no magic cure for the above. And Karen Lewis's comment was directed towards disciplining black kids without being too mean about it.

I'd watch it with these strike threats. Forest "The Hatchet Man" Claypool will use it as an opportunity to cut even more jobs. Any where he has worked CTA and the Chicago Park District he cut a lot of jobs and benefits. That's why they bring him in.
From what I understand the pension pick up has continued contract to contract. If they are asking you to forego a raise for the pension pickup it would probably be a good time to accept it. I'm sure they would give you the 7% back over four years of a new contract.
Your Union leaders need to come off their high horse and be reasonable. The public is sick of hearing their drum beat.
In my neighborhood the principal actually sent out emails asking local businesses to write a check to cover a funding cut the school received so they didn't have to pay teachers off. She stated she did not want to "burden the parents" and decided to go to local businesses. Really are they paying tuition? Are there kids getting free breakfast and lunch? Where the hell is this burden coming from? They could close every CPS school tomorrow and turn them into parks for all I care. Never used them never will. Good luck teachers.

Cheap cops? Hardly. A catholic school education costs around 7-8 grand a year, that is in a white neighborhood. In black and Spanish areas the churches and schools are considered mission churches and receive a lot of money from parishes in white areas and from the suburbs. The teacher's union and the democrats are the ones keeping the voucher programs from becoming a reality so parents can send their kids to the schools of their choice, not the underperforming local public schools. Many parents are now saving their money for a catholic high school education which is over 10 grand a year. I worked three jobs to send my kids to catholic schools and then to college so they would have a chance in life. It is time for vouchers paid by taxpayers so concerned parents can put their kids in good schools. Competition should give the teacher's union a wake up call. For them, it is all about power and money for themselves.

I used to support the teachers in this crap city because being an officer I've witnessed first hand the kind of subculture they have to deal with in their classrooms everyday. The black community has done nothing to improve or promote education for their children in the most basic sense, but instead continues to infantilize itself by making race and law enforcement the scapegoat for all its problems. It remains in this perpetual state of victimhood where every action or inaction is never held accountable or responsible to anyone and assigns fault to those public trusts like schools, police, human services, for not "doing their job" or blaming the state for inadequate entitlements and subsidies. Meanwhile, criminal elements are excused or martyred for their offenses and behavior. It would be impossible to see how anyone could maintain a stable learning environment when you are dealing with a mindset like this. That being said, I cannot fathom how the teacher's union would decide to commiserate with the McDonald/BLM antagonists. It was disgusting, to say the least, hearing of their support for this dog and pony show. Whether it was motivated by politics or just ignorance, I really don't care. I have no support for them now nor will I ever in the future.

$$$$$$$$$$$$

1. Why do so many teachers in the CTU send their kids to private schools?

2. Why did the CTU not take the city to court for not paying the proper pension payments since 1981? Because the CTU has been in bed with the city (11th ward politics) until Rahm came into office. Many many teachers take personal days to work the polls and thus get assigned to good schools.

3. Clout baby coppers should be taken out the schools. Assignments to work a schools should be just like VRI. Trump should make the CTU pay for the coppers.

4. CTU pensions should be put into the TRS with the rest of the state wide teachers.

5. Good teachers should get merit pay. If so half of the other teachers would just be at the poverty level.

6. A new law should take away the right to strike for teachers and force BOTH the CTU and the CITY into BINDING arbitration just like police, paramedics, and the crybaby firemen.

The CPS should start taking applications for teachers to take the place of striking teachers. Replace the strikers and let them walk the line as long as they like. I think you could bring in just about anyone with a college degree and do as good a job as the union members. When you look at the reading and math levels and graduation rates you will see what I am talking about. Let the teachers form a picket line at the school and then arrest any of those who interfere with the replacements. I would bet the strike will not last long. After all, it is for the children ! The first to be fired are the graduates of Chicago State who probably can not even spell their names correctly.

blm members are all registered to and will cheat and vote multiple times in every election.

Therefore Rahm, Anita, Obama and every other Democommunist will listen to them cater to their wishes. They will get what they want.

Cops on the other hand don't bother to vote so they don't get what they want.

What would happen if Deano would announce that there would be voter drives at every district station. These would be manned by FOP volunteers and open anyone who would walk in but the idea is to register and convince every cop and every cop's family member to vote. Why isn't Deano doing this?

I went to a CPS for a case once and the kids just wandered around the hall after the bell rang. You'd never have seen that at Gordon Tech. It was bizarre. The teacher we were looking for didn't show up to work that day. Just didn't show. The principal was borderline retarded.

The whole thing was a shit-show.

SO if you are a good teacher, how the hell are you supposed to get your kids to do well? You can't hold the teacher responsible. It is fucked up at every level.

So ya, some of the employees were the problem here, no doubt. But say you are an outstanding teacher .... you still don't stand a chance.

I would guess that quality teachers get eaten alive.

I don't know what schools your friends attended, but I can tell you from personal experience that it makes a huge difference. I went to both public and Catholic grammar schools and when I transferred from Catholic school to public school, I was at least two grades ahead of the dolts in public school. So yes there is a HUGE difference. In addition, leaving out the disciplinart factor is a big mistake. Without that, kids are lost. When I left the comparative safety of my previous Catholic school, I had to fight my way home every day for weeks at public school. The nuns at my former school would never have tolerated this behavior.

And your foolish attempt at correcting my grammar, i.e. leaving out a word in the

To the public school teacher who apparently has his/her students imported from another planet- news flash for you...the same kids us parochial school teachers educate are the same ones who live next door to the public school students you educate. When they leave the building at the end of the day, they walk the same streets, have all the same shit heads on the way home and play with your public school kids. We have fights in the halls, alcohol being snuck in with the backpacks and all the same shit you do. We have all the same professional growth bullshit, certification hoops and SIP meetings that you do. Make no mistake about it. I do agree with you on the quality of parents however. It would seem parochial school parents definitely have a little more vested into the outcome of their children's childhood experiences and are a bit more "involved" in their kids world- but don't be fooled mistake- the kids you teach spend the remaining 16 hours of their days mixed in with the kids us parochial school teachers work with. The real kicker is on top of all the same crap you have to teach, we add a religion component- more to the day and still turn out a better product for half of the pay so you can stick that BS excuse. You chose the job, it didn't choose you. I by the way went to William G. Hibbard for elementary school and graduated from Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center in the bloody 80's (and the 80's in Albany Park were quite bloody). For the record, my Mother spent 18 years riding around on beat 1724- and quite often locked up many of the kids I grew up with. Where did you go to school Mr or Miss Public School Teacher?

To 7:56 PM, Catholic teacher:

Part of the thinking teachers from any school need to overcome is the rush to martyrdom. Many people seem to pursue teaching because they get off on either being a martyr a hero, or both. As a teacher in a school overrun with martyr-heroes, it's frustrating and stops teachers from being seen as the professionals they are. As such, everyone makes their choice. Teach in the Catholic school, earn far less than you're worth, and deal with far less nonsense, and teach. Teach in the urban public school, earn a bit less than you're worth, deal with an inordinate amount of nonsense, and teach. Your teaching and my teaching may look different, but it still requires skill, knowledge, and practice.

CPS just got their angry and crybaby teachers where it hurts most, in the pocket. CPS teachers were told they have to take THREE furlough days this year, based on an avg. teacher salary of $75,000 that means the crybabies will lose $1200 or 1.6% of their total salary. Plus, add in the 7% pension pickup teachers must now pay ($1750 for the rest of this year) and that's a 8.6% paycut for the poor teachers or close to a $3000 paycut.

Let's take a look at the furlough days. One is Good Friday where CPS has already reported that 8000 teachers have requested a religious holiday or other reasons for the day off. Why bother paying anyone, to work a day when kids will be sitting in auditoriums all day having movie-athon. Good choice for a furlough day here.

The calendar screwed the CPS teachers here due to placement of Good Friday being at the end of the third week in March and CPS Spring Break being the second week in April. Normally, if the CPS Spring Break started the weekend of Easter, teachers would have a professional development day or the day off altogether

The next two furlough days are at the end of the year, labeled PD Days, and two days where teachers walk into school with shorts, sandals, and shitass grin knowing they're getting paid to be hungover and sit and hangout all day and doing nothing. Another good choice for two furlough days here.

Three things screwed teachers here: BBB and SUPES, no snow or cold days needed, and the teachers and the CTU bitching about the waste of money and more work to have PD Days or the result of them.
