Need Cars?

This is the Vehicle Board for Evidence Techs:

If we're reading it correctly, there are 33 vehicles assigned. 10 look like they're in use, 9 are available, 1 is detailed to "Summer Mobile" and 13 cars are down (at least 10 of them junked, which means they're never coming back.) This is similar to more than a few Districts we've passed through.

We know ET's get a lot of high mileage cars and we know ET's were notoriously understaffed, some nights having one or two covering the entire city, just cleaning up backlogged jobs and handling shootings. But if anyone wonders why the clearance rate sucks as bad as it does, perhaps a lack of actual evidence to prosecute is a contributing factor?

It all runs hand-in-hand with Rahm's "savings by attrition" mindset.

How about start writing up people for abusing the cars. Like never downing them when they need service or throwing garbage all over the inside. Or letting the engine run dry of oil.

All coppers need to treat their iron steeds better. Cars and squads are abused and neglected. No wonder they expire before their time.

What an absolute shame. I know a couple ETs personally and they share the same tales of woe regarding their vehicles as many other places: super high mileages (average 130K+) bad tires, horrible front ends that shimmy over every pavement imperfection, worn out seats, warped rotors, barely functional PDTs, bad/no AC, etc, etc. Now I know vehicles are like this is a lot of places but these guys and gals are zipping all over the city, much of the time on the X-ways (first watch especially with light traffic). They're not at "patrol speeds" in circles around a district or idling waiting to go to the next call. Without exaggeration the ET vehicles see 3-5 times the mileage a district beat car sees in 24 hours. More mileage means more wear, more tear and more things breaking more often. Perhaps Cmdr. Murphy and Lt. McMurray need to put the screws to the powers that be and work some magic to get these folks roadworthy vehicles before - God forbid - there's a tragedy. I see new Explorers EVERYWHERE. Districts, units, Transit Detail, HQ... You name it. There's no reason why Unit 277 shouldn't be given 15-20 new vehicles. Especially since our illustrious 'union' prez included yearly guaranteed numbers of new vehicles in the CBA that you chumps voted for. So where the f!&k are all these cars that we 'won' in contract talks? Send a fleet to Homan Square for these people already. I won't even start on their other equipment (cameras, batteries, etc) as that's a story for a whole 'nother time.

Here's an idea.

Some of the Aldermen could use their TIF money and go buy (strongarm) some used Crown Vics and Tahoes. They might get some decent ones for about 20Gs. A paint job and light package would be about another 5-7Gs.

Now unless they bought reconditioned police cars these would not have the Police Package in them, the high capacity radiator, transmission cooler, heavy duty suspension. They would have to be driven like they were made of glass, almost....fatally.

The alderman could them put their names and ward numbers on the cars and they would be highly visible in their wards and the cars couldn't be used anywhere else.

Stay Safe. At least the A.C. and the heaters would probably work.

Sat south has mostly leftover crown vics from TRU. They are all around 10 years old with 110k to 140k miles. All missing half their paint, non working windows, non working seat belts, doors, etc etc. At this point this has little to do with how we treat them, these cars should have been removed from service long ago. They are well beyond not safe, for civilian use let alone police work.

Last week, 009 had 9 cars down with no pool cars for 7 of them. 5 of those are supposed to be junked, but there aren't any new ones at the area to replace them. I'm sure it's a common problem all over the city. 1st watch has to sit around wasting time because there aren't enough cars until 3rd watch comes in. Typical city operation, instead of keeping a constant flow of new cars coming in they wait until shit gets completely depleted. Maybe the FOP can bargain for 600 cars in the new contract.

Friend works in police fleet, the stories of goober fixin cars are legendary, pull your car in for say oil change, and you get bonus grease on wheel, other things broken, "here is your pool car we don't have parts"

Let's talk new explorers not a great vehicle by any standard, but better than old junkers we drive. Ford right on Torrence in Chicago has a huge garage next to the Ford plant that does "Start and go" police equipment installation, including strips, computers and light packages, when they do it the "plug and play" is wired properly and fully warranted. but no the city has older equipment and the "installers" at fleet are nothing but "parts changers" look under the dash (heck most vehicles just have wiring falling out) the wires are cut and spliced. Then we had the famous computer wiring under the rubber mat on floors that the brilliant at fleet wired and when snow and water drip down "shazaam" the dash and controls are like a bad pinball machine flashing and engine cuts out. Then back to ford dealer who says "sorry not warranty!"

Then we also have own "cowboys and cowgirls" that ride em real fast and never check basic fluid levels like oil,or as a matter of fact never even get them washed, and bring them to next watch on empty with the "I did not notice" the flat tire. You cannot beat the shit out a vehicle police spec or not 24 hour shifts and expect a long life for a vehicle! Then we have the food pigs you know food wrappers, actual pieces of food that falls down the seat tracks, and then the idiots that chew and spit it on the windows and doors "real class hair gels" plenty of blame to pass around. If your gifted with a new vehicle take care of it, that way in summer you have air and in winter heat!

10/04/2016 02:27:00 AM

And this has exactly WHAT to do with the topic of no cars/shitty cars? Can't get to those jobs "one at a time" when there's no cars available and the ones that are, aren't roadworthy.

AGAIN..... The fix is downing EVERY car that needs something fixed or replaced. My rule of thumb is as follows: would I put my kids in this car and drive, especially at highway speeds? If not, down goes the car. Worn tires? Downing it. Wiper blades streak? Calling the R Man and waiting til new blades are on. Front end rattles or alignment is off or brakes pull? I'll be calling in a tow if I don't feel safe limping it to the area. Exhaust leak? Shit, that can literally kill me and my partner. Down goes the car. Frayed seat belts? Same flavor. Emergency equipment not working properly? Notify your Sgt and inform the dispatcher that you'll respond to 1A calls, but w/o lights and/or siren until the R-Man shows up to fix it or writes up a ticket to down it.

You see, it's real easy to fix the problem. The biggest problem however is hardheaded jagoff's that won't put the car down for things like this. Also... If the powers to be our reading this… And I know they are…

WE NEED TO GO BACK TO ASSIGNED VEHICLES. If you want your cars to last longer, the same 6+ asses in them every day tend to take care of things better when they have the same equipment on a regular basis.

Trust me people, there is a reason the department is about to hire a ton of detectives. Allegedly, in the next few years certain detectives will be cross trained in crime scene processing and collection. They will respond to shootings and homicides with a "team" of detectives. One or two of the detecives in this team will act as the ETs and process the scene and gather evidence. Several departments are starting to do this throughout the country and its actually pretty successful. The team of detectives works well together and its easier to keep track of evidence and reports when its all one team processing, collecting, interviewing and investigating the crime. No more calls to the ETs or having to hunt down a certain ET months later etc. Everyone will be on the same team and a Det on that team will be the person processing the scene. As a detective I actually find this interesting and pretty good idea. But just so all of you know, this is why they are going to be adding hundreds of detectives, not just because they want more to work cases. even though the guys who collect the evidence will also be able to play an investigative role in cases they are working with their team and when not collecting evidence and being an "ET" they will be able to have their own caseload. In california in towns that have detectives that do this they are usually compensated with an out of grade type slip when they play ET.

So much for hiring more police.

Truth be told the coppers using the damn cars are more at fault for broken down fleet. A complete lack of any kind of responsibility and the lazy thought of it just being city property. Coppers driving it like some stolen rental car and crushing speed bumps and curbs "just because," are a big reason they are tattered. The perpetual lazy that can't so much as put gas in a car as if it were coming out of their own pocket. The flat tires that just get a little more air and left for the next guy. The check engine light that gets ignored by the day shift and drive it into the ground. A steering wheel that looks like it was chewed on by a grizzly bear and trim and accessories broken or ripped off. Cleanliness is a whole other issue all together! The food and spilled drinks just ignored and left for the next guy to clean up or the guy after that and so on. Much like anything coppers are their own worst enemy.

The city has their burden in it no doubt, the bullshit take home cars for house mice need to stop. The vehicles with 150k miles need to go, hell some douche bag copper will buy it at auction and drive it on his own time.

I said the same thing but further investigation revealed body damage that didn't allow the back hatch to close & lock properly. Which puts equipment such as cameras, video cameras, crime scene markers etc at risk for theft/loss (not to mention the whole vehicles interior being accessible). So slow your roll tough guy
