Down 8 Homicides

  • The good news coming out of Chicago also serves as a sad reminder of just how bad the city's violence is: 239 people were murdered as of May 31, according to Chicago Police. That is down slightly from 247 during the same period last year.

In 2016, there were nearly 800 homicides in the city, a 20-year high.

"If anybody thinks that last year's murder rate in Chicago is OK, and if you are a leader in this city, you should not be," said Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.
Fox News asks the obvious question (and misreports a bunch more):
  • Emanuel has made efforts to stop crime. He recently added 1,000 police officers to the force that will start working overtime.

The city has also expanded its gunshot-detection technology and Emanuel has lobbied with the police superintendent for a new bill that will crack down on repeat gun offenders.

Still, in the month of May, the city averaged two murders and 10 shootings a day, leaving those who've lost a loved one wondering if stopping crime is at the top of the mayor's priority list.
And we reply:
  1. Rahm didn't "add" 1,000 - he's hasn't hired enough to keep up with retirements yet. He's hiring back exhausted coppers to do scarecrow policing.
  2. The Shotspotter technology is still a bit buggy according to reports from 007 and 011. It's missing a rather high percentage of shootings, so police aren't responding near fast enough.
  3. Stopping crime was never on Rahm's "priority list." Rahm's priority is getting re-elected. If crime happens to drop, that's just a bonus. If not, he's got Special Ed to fall on his sword.
Discuss.

Shot spotter is maybe at 30% of detecting a dual shots fired in 007. It hits on fireworks going off more than it does actual shots. And it maybe gets 40% of legit shots fired. Add to that the fact that once shot spotter hits it takes a minimum of one minute to actually go through the vetting process at shotspotter and actually get dispatched.

not sure how the spotshotters work, but my understand is it's not real time. it has to be verified via some out of state office(someone got greased on this deal I'm sure). After it is verified, it is phoned in. Can anyone confirm?

How long is the wait from the time the spotshotters catches loud reports till when an officer puts it out?

Shotspotter technology has existed for over a decade. In no jurisdiction has it led to a really significant diminishment in shootings or murders. And neither has gun control laws. However, it's well documented that recidivism is, if not the biggest factor, one of the biggest factors in violence attributed to guns. Which begs the question: Do guns shoot people or do people that possess guns(in this city almost all of which possess them illegally) shoot people? The fact is that lenient sentencing beginning in the "Juvenile Justice System" in Cook County has, not only put shooters back on the street, it has emboldened them to be even more violent because they're well aware that their actions lead to next to zero consequences. There is no, zero, grass roots program that has successfully stifled the major issue that is this: conflict resolution in the vast majority of this city is INHERENTLY solved through violence. Until that issue is adddressed by everyone, especially parents and "religious leaders" this will continue. And us, the police, will somehow bear the brunt of criticism under a flag of political correctness that has, and will continue to, failed the good people of this city, regardless of their race, creed or political affiliation.

Technology is there to support the police, not to take the place of the police. Unfortunately the pols believe technology is there to do more with less police on the street. Whether it is the grunt in the trenches or Dets or some other support Unit, it will always boil down to bodies on the ground. Without the correct number of bodies on the street it is a shell game of moving cops/units from one point to another point, hotspots, or initiating an O.T. initiative on RDOs to cover districts.

We should be over 12K police officers on the payroll. There should be between 8 and 9K cops in patrol assigned to districts. The other thousands are supervisory/support units.

Even if Rahm had the money to actually hire cops to not only keep up with the exodus of coppers but bump those numbers, the effectiveness of those hirees is inversely impacted due to no equipment - cars/radios. Cops waiting hours for other cops to turn over cars and radios diminishes the presence of the number of cops who are suppose to be on the street.

Crime is down because the bean counters have figured that O.T. can accomplish desired results, though minuscule, in lieu of actually hiring bodies and the associated costs with those bodies. Rahm will fudge hiring numbers as long as crime and homicides drop.

Over at Wallethub, a personal finance site, apparently they have lost their minds. They ranked Chicago as number four of eighty cities in the United States on a ranking list of the Best Vacation Places. Of all factors considered, Chicago ranked number twenty-one for safety! Say what?! Does that mean fifty-nine other cities had a higher homicide rate than Chicago? That's a whole lot of murdering going on in the United States!

As long as the mayor gets re-elected, and there is someone else to blame everything else on, the crime rate is just a minor inconvenience to him. Blaming guns instead of the idiots using them to commit crimes is just part of the liberal democrat mantra.
I reckon as long as they're blaming guns and trying to disarm everyone but criminals, we still have our Second Amendment Rights! How about getting a death penalty and use it on everyone that shoots someone else in a criminal manner and do it within three months. Victims shouldn't have to wait 10, 20, 30 years or more for justice! Then watch your crime rate plummet.

Wait till election time. Rahm and the Alderthieves will be boasting of how the police reforms are working to stop the disproportionate arrest of minorities in the city. Never mind how, less police officers, ISR's and the new cannabis ticket and release program. According to the Special Order on cannabis, If a child of 13 is stopped with Marijuana, the officer will give the juvenile a ticket and NOT CONTACT A PARENT. Thats right we can't tell the parent of an at risk juvenile, hey your kid is smoking or selling cannabis. Just give them a ticket and send them on their way.

Also if Rahm was serious about putting cops back on the street, CLOSE THE JISC. What a complete failure! No one takes juveniles straight to the JISC to do processing, because they are held hostage by the officers assigned there who do everything they can to not give victims a day in court. Districts were more efficient when the Youth officers were in the stations. Parents could come to the station to get their little rascals. Now the JiSC wants the district to pick up mommy and drive them to JISC Then drive them home.

Then some truth will be told about it, because it won't matter anymore.
Summer is here, and tempers are about to flare. Watch for the body count to pile up, and the cops to be blamed.

Another case of putting the cart before the horse.
The feral urban predators will blast past that number this week - No Rain predicted thru Sunday.
But no need to be alarmed...
Rahm and BeansKitney has the situation under control now and will continue to keep that 3% downtick intact for the rest of the Spring season. They're gong to call for a huge Love Fest to kick off the Summer of Rahm.
If Rahm is not talking about his protected base doing all the shooting and killing, then everything is fine.
No need for hires.
No need for a House mouse flush.
Just more of the same deflecting the violent crime issues with tales of underserved CPS Kids, Grampa's Sanctuary and of course, Anti-President Trump rhetoric.

If Rahm Emanuel can't control the armed feral street predators in the community, he won't stop marauding urchins pillaging downtown and other viable areas either.
It's embrassing to watch Merit Hack Goofs bumping into one another with hairbrained washed out Police strategies.
Rahm Emanuel is an idiot and is ill-prepared to handle any major incident that may be brewing because he Failed to Hire Police in the past four years to keep up with retirements.
Simply - he doesn't care about police, its just his phony sympathetic image he has to maintain.

The lakefront, the Loop, the museums are the catch and with the number of people seeing these versus the number who encounter any problem is infinitesimal. Don't be blinded by your hatred of your own life. True coppers are smart enough to tell people that the headlines all come from areas that civilized folk (and people) wouldn't be caught alive in.

6/05/2017 10:34:00 AM

I agree.

6/05/2017 09:50:00 PM

10:34:00 AM, you are quite foolish and so is your follower, 09:50:00 PM. The chances of being victimized are infinitesimal? Hardly. The offenders are not stationery or boundary-bound to high-crime neighborhoods or, your words, uncivilized sections. They travel to the lakefront, the Loop and the museums and they pick their victims carefully. They prey on the innocent, the helpless, the out-of-towners and the "understanding" liberals of which many do not even bother reporting the incidents when they have been victimized, including rape, robbery, battery and theft from vehicles. And, even if you have been to the lakefront, Loop and the museums a hundred times without incident, it doesn't mean you were safe. It just means you were lucky.

We are just telling you (who never walked in a Police Officers shoes, but know more about police work) That the savages are not staying in the South and west side they are coming to the tourist areas. If you're to stupid to get it...... believe me you'll get it soon enough. and FU again

Again. Da Mare has 4-12 popos 24/7 exclusively for him and his. 24/7! 365 days a year. Add that up and include cars, etc. How much is spent on that security compared to entire areas of da
City? His wellbeing - matters. The rest of you peasants' don't!

Wow - 8! - count 'em, 8 less room temperature bodies compared to the first 152 days of last year! Mr. Mayor, for this toast, might I suggest you put away the Flintstones Jelly glasses and dust off the Waterford crystal?

Congratulations, the best post of the year!

Back in the day you had two dispatchers . All calls were going out while caller still on phone. These computers destroyed our response times. Computers did to response time what isrs have done to police work.

***********************************************
Actually during most hours of the day there were 3. 2 answering the phones and 1 actually dispatching. Remember though that if the call was not answered in about 6 rings it went to an overflow board, where it was answered by a P.O. and then had to be hand carried to the appropriate zone. It was a better system, and had merits, but it did tend to break down on a busy summer night. It was staffed by P.O.''s that largely had worked in the area where they were dispatching.

Leave the troll be...

He/She/It will understand soon enough when that breeze
he feels at is some mouth-breather who climbed through
the bedroom window/got up in the buzzy-door/jumped on
the elevator at the last second and is lovingly caressing
on and blowing in his/her/it's ear and whispering sweet
nothings like "Gimme yo shit."

You both suffer from a very common disease which is oftentimes a malady of future victims. It is named, A False Of Security.

Yes, Chicago has a number of alluring attractions as mentioned by 10:34:00 AM, with a concurrence offered by 09:50:00 PM. There is a beautiful lakefront, wonderful museums and the Loop is an attractive place to view and experience, but the same places you want to visit are viewed as a hunting ground by many, quite mobile, cold-blooded, unfeeling predators. If you insist on visiting the places of interest you mentioned, be vigilant, be alert, be careful, be wise and never let down your guard especially to protect your charges and especially in this day and age.

Now, to address your comment that was blessed by 09:50:00 PM, "Don't be blinded by your hatred of your own life." Many small-minded people who find themselves unable to formulate a comprehensive argument or defense, often revert to such comments. Your rudeness is unappreciated, but should you continue to live your life with your head in the clouds, you should be aware of the words you could utter in the future. Commonly, victims utter, "Why me? Why my child?" and "I cannot believe they did that to me!" and "Officer, why did they treat me so disrespectfully, hit me and take my wallet?" and "Which ER is treating my child's wounds?" and "I am never returning to this place!" and the most terrifying, "How do I get to the morgue?" Good luck to you. Denial is your worst enemy.

How many UCR 5078's are there? The new "Death Investigation" ucr code...not an "IUCR" code and not recognized by the State or the FBI. I believe last year, ten percent of murders were 5078.
6/05/2017 12:17:00 PM

You re another idiot. The code was added in order to get the state to work up evidence. a 5084 Is a NON CRIMINAL Death Investigation. The ISP Lab WILL NOT WORK UP EVIDENCE in a non criminal case. A cause of death may take up to 3-6 months to get test results back from the ME s office. How the hell are you going to make a death a murder with out a cause of Death? Let alone try and charge someone w no cause

To the dunce who is defending "Death Investigation" ucr codes. Please read Chicago Magazine articles relating to this, easily found with a google search. A body rolled up in a carpet is not a death investigation and not a suicide. Classify it as a murder and it can always be downgraded.
