Again with the Lakefront
- A gang-related shootout on the lakefront left Lakeview golfers stunned, but nobody injured Sunday morning at the Sydney Marovitz Golf Course parking lot, according to witness reports and police sources.
No one is in custody.
Gunfire between rival gang members erupted around 8:10 a.m. apparently after one man approached another and asked for his affiliation.
Multiple witnesses reported that one man fired a shotgun and the other fired a handgun in the conflict which unfolded at the east end of the parking lot. Shell casings were recovered at the scene.
A policeman on scene stated that “there was definitely a handgun and a shotgun and they fired back and forth.”
Some stops were made later, but guess what?
- About 30 minutes after the gunfire, golfers summoned police to the course after seeing two men who were in the area of the shooting ducking in and out of brush Marovitz’s east fence line.
A carload of men was stopped nearby, but the city’s link to a national crime database was offline, and officers could not verify the occupants’ identities, gang affiliations, or warrant information, according to an officer.
The LEADS system has been down for two or more days now, rendering the entire Department incapable of running plates, verifying licenses, checking names. And no word on when it will be back.

LEADS was down out in the South Burbs too, I think it was Statewide. Seems like it downs us for more time as each month passes. Some of our units were able to run plates / DL's thru our mobiles. NCIC via mobile as well, dispatch still couldn't run them till later Sunday.

I'm not surprised at the time. They party all night long into the wee morning hours on weekends on the rocks. There is a strong homeless contingent at the shelter of between 8-12 youths of all races. All they talk about is partying and where to go to so that they can accomplish that goal. Both parties fight among themselves on a regular basis. This is why I carry all the time on the lakefront. My liberal amigos think I'm over reacting. I don't think so.

A major system like LEADS down for two days? When working for a major carrier and data provider if we had a system down for TWO MINUTES there was hell to pay and because of team pride and overall competence in our work that only happened once on my watch and it was more like about 30 seconds. What is going on here. System hardware and software continues to become more reliable every year. By the way, this was a LEO system for that beer town to the north and it was in the 80's.
How much longer does this city think it can stand against crime when it has at it's side a dysfunctional Law Enforcement System such as ours?

Section 8 scattered housing is the death of crime free proud communities. Similar to dropping a bomb or biological weapon (which in a way it is.) The city I live does this and in nice treed middle class residential areas it's easy to pick out the Section 8. Grass is 5 feet high, hooptie parked on the lawn, doors hanging open, no window coverings except nailed up sheets, trash all over and the best for last! Sharp increase in crime. Theft of anything not nailed down or protected, screaming domestic fights, loud parties and the police visiting at least once a week, feral children running loose and you get the idea. Generally this lasts anywhere from 6 to 9 months before they are forceably removed and then another 6 months of peace while the asshole who owns the property has to fix it back to living conditions which generally entails a dumpster full of wreckage such as most of the kicked in doors, cabinets which have been torn off walls, broken toilets and sinks and carpeting that should be declared a Super Fund Clean Up Site. Yes, just like us. When are the people going to come the their collective sense and demand an end to this nonsense? Oh, one more thing! Why do these people all own Pitt Bulls which are totally neglected mistreated and a terror to neighbors? Guess that was rhetorical.
I am sure glad I gave up golf!

The only report of any crime on WGN-9 was the 606 trail robberies. They won't give a description, only the police have a general description of the offenders. One mutt pulls a gun after knocking the bike rider off his/her bike and the other mutt, beats the victim and takes whatever valuables they can get. I'll take a leap of faith here, that the offenders are the usual suspects. There's some kind of award being offered and a possibility the camera's on the trail may have photos of the offenders. Sorry, most field stops and random traffic stops, in fact most traffic stops are being phased out and are gone for at least a generation. In case you missed the Sun-Times editorial a few days ago from Steve Chapman, he called for the end of most police traffic stops. He said they are causing a danger to citizens and to police officers. he cited the gang banger who was in the back seat of a car and waived a handgun before the officers shot him. Chapman believes traffic cameras are all that is needed. So, all beat cars should now be in the station and only come out when someone calls. The days of pro active policing are dead. The liberals want it that way. Give them what they want. May God have mercy on everyone else

Have things changed with the contract? I was under the impression that details were for a maxi y'all of 90 days and then you were returned to your old unit unless an opening was announced. What's the sense of having bids or rules if management can detail po's anytime they want for as long as they want

I don't know...reads here like there is no shortage of do nothings already assigned to MT, and the sgt. is attempting to remind those assigned there of their duties/responsibilities. Morale is NEVER bad in specialized unit! Of course, if working conditions are so difficult now that you are being held accountable to eat lunch where you're assigned or to notify your sgt. that you're down on an actual arrest, there are always tons of beat cars waiting to be filled in each of the 22 remaining district stations.
Bet morale is suddenly on the upswing now!

They tried to keep people who work Special in the dark about which watch she was working because nobody would work her watch or cancel. When nobody would show up for her watch she would just leave nice and early. If she only has a couple people show up, she begs the Tact. Sgt. to handle her check off so she can skate early. One of the biggest snakes in the grass to work in this Department.

Ask F.O.P., the reason we have 30 year vets hanging around is due to health care, some officers have only 20 years but are 55, receive 100 health care, others have 33 years but are 53 and are penalized because of age discrimination. Don't cry on the blog, yell at your unit rep. Everyone wants to retire.

The failure of LEADS is everywhere and shows just what a shit hole this state has become. When you upgrade a computerized system, you run the old one until the new one is installed and ready to go live. Sometimes you run them side by side but in this state you go off line to make the conversion. Idiots. Every time I see a politician in this state on the news that is my first thought, Idiots.
