Underwood Ruling
From our e-mail:
- Judge Cohen will be issuing a ruling in the Underwood retiree healthcare case. July 31 Daley center Room 2308 at 10:30.
The FOP will have a bus leaving at 9:45 from 1412 W Washington.
Which lawsuit is this one? Again, anyone with info, post it up in the comments section.

city to supplement retirees health insurance
What's this, an organized form of support?
That's right, give Judge Cohen blue optics.
I'd love to attend as a retiree can the bus swing by my home on the way down there, I'll bring the cat food and crackers...
Good luck.
Is the Judge first going to order the Mayor to go back and get all those millions of dollars he's squndered on bullshit, so the money can go to pay pensions and healthcare benefits? I doubt it. (Although someone should see the "must pay" bills are paid, before the Mayor goes spouting off how much he'll spend on whatever.)
(Someone that can't be bought off.)
J.J.
this is the lawsuit where the city said as of 01Jan17 we are no longer paying for retiree healthcare (no longer subsidizing 50 or 55% of it)
Remember the Judge's wife is Susan Sher, former chief of staff to Michelle Obama. Let's see where this one goes..........
I would love to go but I had to get a part time job to pay for my medical. It's not that bad, I like the job. But it's still a job. Rahm's day is coming.
It's something the slick sleevers better start thinking about.
It wont be long before the day will come and they put their hair gel away and slip into retirement.
they'll find out that it wasn't just the Dinosaurs that were getting screwed ,way back In the year 2017.
they'll find out that maybe they should have cared a little about their future.
$55 per month.
The fact that there's only 2 comments on this topic does not bode well for any retirees that will be affected in this case.
The more the better, this Judge sees a bunch of retirees and there spouses is a good thing for us and bad for the City...... It a hiring for the retirees health care. It's good to see FOP's support and to all members, this court hiring is important to all.
pack the room
What is the over under on the crook county people getting to the judge offering a better position possibly some pay off money in order to hurt the police even more the mayor has plenty of money for all the illegal invaders giving billions a way to help them the criminals!
Let's hope that the Judge's ruling makes retiree's healthcare affordable. We all deserve to be on a level playing field. There are some that are paying way to much and others who serve 20 years and get free healthcare because the are 55. What about those that served 30 but came on young.
Doubt this case will end here regardless of the ruling. This case will be appealed up to the Illinois Supreme Court
Isn't there another case going right now. Thought I remember a week or so ago on the SCC board comments about the city had 35 days to appeal the ruling and like 20 days were already gone

Good point. I would have had to put in 31 years to get the 55 and out health care benefit. At the time I retired it didn't seem worth it to keep working to save a couple hundred bucks a month. I know plenty of people who put in less than 25 years and are now enjoying free health care. Good on them, but if you came on this stupid job in your mid or early twenties the deal sucks.
The decision will already have been made, the judge just reading his findings. Doesn't matter who is in the courtroom.
Since 1982 Chicago has provided free or subsidized health care to certain retirees who receive pension benefits. In 2013 the ordinance establishing those benefits expired. After being notified that they would have to pay more for medical coverage in 2014, the retirees filed suit, alleging that any reduction of health care or increase in the retirees’ contribution toward it violated Art. XIII 5 of the Illinois Constitution, which says that “[m]embership in any pension or retirement system of … any unit of local government … shall be an enforceable contractual relationship, the benefits of which shall not be diminished or impaired” and the Contracts Clause of the U.S. Constitution. Following removal, the district court dismissed the suit, ruling that the Illinois Pensions Clause does not apply to health care. While the case was on appeal, the Supreme Court of Illinois held that the Pensions Clause applies to health benefits. The Seventh Circuit vacated, noting that the Illinois case did not address the exact issue in this case. Because the Supreme Court of Illinois has granted review of a similar case and because this suit began in state court, relinquishing supplemental jurisdiction is preferable to certifying questions to the state judiciary.
Just like the soda tax via Toni Prickwankle this judge as well as the OTGER judge got their jobs on the bench from Democrat Crook County bosses. Don't expect anything good.
Can the bus pick me up at my house in Indiana!
I've talked to guys about this case. Nobody ever expected CPD to win this case. Maybe that's why CFD cowered out.
How can you have guys with 20 years receive better benefits then guys with 30 years on the job. Sounds like a win to me.Furthermore, guys are buying suburban, county, and military time, but the most senior CPD guys get screwed, not a good policy.

That's not why they backed out, they didn't want to pay anything. Easier to sit back and do nothing and then get the benefits later that CPD worked for and paid for. Happens all the time.
