Gauntlet of Gunfire
- A single gunshot was fired on a South Side expressway ramp Friday afternoon, but no one was shot, according to Illinois State Police.
It happened about 4:15 p.m. on the entrance ramp from the northbound Stevenson Expressway to the northbound Dan Ryan Expressway, according to a statement from ISP.
Witnesses told troopers they heard a single gunshot but no one was injured, police said.
With the amount of gunfire on the expressways, it's amazing more people haven't been hit by accident. It's also amazing that Leo "WHOOOOOO!" Schmitz gets to keep his job.

He jus funnin'
How, exactly, is Leo to blame for shootings from/at moving vehicles on the Chicago expressways? Unless he's the guy doing the shooting, how is he responsible?
He isn't raising the morons who are doing the shooting, he isn't present when the shootings happen, and odds are another ten staties roaming around the highways wouldn't deter a damned thing.
And no, I am not him and I don't work for him.
Couldn't have been a backfire from some hooptie? One of those crotch rockets popping when they gun it? Or some nitwit on a side street shooting at some other nitwit?
Again, what's the evidentiary value of a bullet casing after it's been run over by a gazillion vehicles on the highway (if there's even one there)?
Shutting things down to search is a waste of EVERYONE'S time and money...
Really? Can you identify a realistic policing strategy or tactic that would drastically disrupt the process and reduce or eliminate "expressway shootings"? The expressways are not a "community" or localized, identifiable gang enclave where the usual, proven police strategies (assuming the politicians would even allow them to be implimented In this climate) could be applied and would actually work. The beef starts well before they get on the expressway; the shooting is the end result of a process with no nexus to the expressway other than that they happen to be traveling / fleeing on that road. The uptick in expressway shootings is a function of the explosion of uncontrollable violence in the city.
Crashes and Deaths from DUI, reckless driving, speeding, texting, seatbelt usage, etc can be (and are) reduced through proven enforcement strategies. The only way to mitigate "Expressway" Shootings Is to disrupt and reduce the overall violence in city.
Sorry SCC, I respect your perspectives and appreciate the invaluable forum you provide, but you can't blame the State or their Director for this.
Leo must be the J. Edgar Hoover of the ISP.
He must have a shit ton portfolio on the powers
that be.
He needs to be taken away by men wearing white coats
along with that pathetic social-experimenter genius Tom Dart.
In-fucking-competence at the highest levels. They would both
be rejected by WalMart loss prevention/security.
Awwww. ... where's the photo of the line looking for the 1 "casing" I'm sure all the working people love getting caught in that every other day...

(OT) hello ray "skycap" Lopez alderman "we don't want help we don't want national guard tanks rolling down archer avenue" another 1 shot seems to be almost a daily occurrence:
Man, 20, critically wounded in Brighton Park apartment shooting
Sun-Times file photo
A 20-year-old man was in critical condition after he was shot multiple times Saturday night in a Southwest Side Brighton Park neighborhood apartment.
About 11:40 p.m., someone walked into an apartment in the 2900 block of West 40th Street and shot the man, according to Chicago Police.
He was in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was being treated for multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Area Central detectives were conducting an investigation. There were no suspects in custody.
Gee whiz ray skycap wasn't so bad was it? That area was extremely safe years ago when the legal immigrants were there what happened? If you cared ray you would be all over the news calling in Jeff Sessions to clean up this infested area and lock up and remove the criminals but you won't typically democratic mantra the killing carnage fields of Chicago are unabated!
Ahh ray November 4th is coming rapidly the anti-police protesters are coming to destroy this city can you or any other overpaid elected speak out? Ahh that's the secret you and your cohorts will be forced to call out the national guard then, they will clean up the mess and taxpayers will be footing the bill! You know with your total stupidity we are losing millions for police services starting this Friday because you and others refuse to obey federal laws, and doing what your doing makes the "forgotten men and women" of chiraq totally on the island!
leo schmitz is the man. i don't care what anybody says. try asking any ISP what they think of him and they'll tell u the same
SCC, you cannot hold Schmitz accountable for the expressway shootings. They are, simply an extension of Chicago's long time running out-of-control violence. While I have never worked for Schmitz in either agency, I am sure that he and the SIP are doing the best they can out there on the expressways.

Agreed but Leo being the the head the so called Ceo of Illinois state police that is where the buck stops! Absolutely not his fault at all but as Richie Daley said "you need buffers around you to absorb the hits" so the elected will blame Leo for their incompetence!
Mayor emanual in his infinite brilliance reminded gang members to take it [murder violence stuff] in the alley. Maybe IDOT could construct alleys on the expressways giving working people a chance to commute and go about their day without urban drama.
The time has come for hunchlabs, shotspotter technology, positive community interactions and peace marches on the interstate highways. The untold number of prevented murders attributed to all of these crime reduction strategies are the real story. And lets not forget about those post shooting missions. The successes are why top brass make big bank and connected crime strategy technology those inside investors reap extra ordinary returns on their investments.
Leo was always promoted far above his capabilities, but this incident is not on him.
Jet flying limousine riding son of a whooooo
Not Schmitz' fault.
You could put Patton himself in charge, but without the political will to arrest, prosecute, and imprison criminals, nothing will change.
Leo Schmitz is an asshole, pure and simple.
Make sure you wear your cover when out of your vehicle.
He runs the states largest traffic unit, how is he supposed to stop expressway shootings?
Just another reason to leave the chicago area. Traffic and now canvassing for casings. Really nothing good about the city.
More crime than ever on Chicagolands Tollways, Expressways, and Highways. All OK as long as the Smoke & Mirrors Hack Bosses who kickback to the Illinois Corruptocrats keep the $$$$ comin into them.

He and his personnel are paid big $$$ to catch these criminals stalking our Illinois roads, and doing a poor job in that regard, and in traffic safety, which Illinois accident rates have risen in the past few years. Get out of the Cracker Barrel, Smokies, break out your crayons, and write some f'n tickets and stop some vehicles that look suspect that are driving like maniacs. It ain't that difficult to spot them. And quit sticking bullshit plastic medals all over your cheesy uniforms.
Leo is a good dude a bit of a self promoter but not a bad boss CPD.
We need to put toll booths up at every entrance ramp to the Ike and Ryan - just like in Blazing Saddles. "Somebody's gotta go back and get a shit load of dimes!"
And you can use that one free of charge ISP.
And what are we being paid for. How many homicdes?
OT:
Ask Leo what the fucking plan was for the eclipse.................0 troopers on interstates, US Routes or State routes. D10 had NO IDEA that the eclipse was going to happen..........
Why do the police spend so much time and effort to find a shell casing.? Did they ever get forensic evidence from a shell casing? Do the police know how stupid they look all walking around looking for a useless piece of teal?
If the offender used a revolver there is not going to be any shell casings are there. Dah
No, can't put this on Leo. He is one of the few decent cops trying to make a difference in a town full of scumbags!
Leo does a great job for the ISP. Period. And that is why he keeps his job. And if you were Director of the ISP what would you do differently?
Like the CPD Leo is under manned. Further how do you stop some jakoff banger from firing away at will?
Michael Sweig
Nobody blame Grau when he was there and he was the height of incompetence. Talked a good game but nothing to show for it except ass kiss'n all the politicians and bosses. Another legend in his own mind. Can't give it up either. Now working for Monterrey security as a consultant to further the chaos there.Hi,take your size 7's and stay home.Oh wait I forgot about the dolly.
