- On the heels of a month that last year became the deadliest month in decades, Chicago police say city violence is down so far this year, including in August.
According to police data, August saw 332 people shot and 50 people killed. That's a drop from the 74 people killed in July.
Last year, the month of August became the deadliest month in two decades with 90 murders in 31 days. By the end of the month, the city had recorded over 470 homicides for the year.
Last month, the number of murders dropped by more than 47 percent compared to August 2016.
We've been saying since 01 August that this past month (55 homicides) would have a hell of a time living up to last year (98 homicides) - the most violent month in twenty years. We were correct.
If you go back to 2015, the total homicides were 56, so the long term trend isn't that spectacular by any stretch of the imagination. But the media will run with the numbers anyway.

After watching ABC news last night I can see why law enforcement in this country has a long way to go to gaining the public confidence. In that episode a Salt Lake City M2 detective manhandled and arrested a F2 RN who was doing her job by not letting him obtain a blood sample from her unconscious patient due to the fact the detective did not have a SW and the patient could not give consent. This woman was not an unemployed hood rat looking for a ghetto lottery payout. And even they have rights that must be respected by public guardians. On every watch in every district and even in our elite units of our fine department we have at least one hothead like this guy. We have got to do a better job of dealing with all citizens in this day and age of a camera at every square meter. Not only will this guy get jammed up but his peers who did nothing will also get jammed up. This is not about political correctness this is about being a 21st century police department that can out think the bad guys and regain our the confidence of the citizenry. I'm an old copper who served under some great bosses including Commander Bobby Guthrie, Eddie King, Frank Radtke, and I worked in the following districts the Deuce, Fillmore, and the ninth district when it was located at 3501 South Lowe street so I'm not some punk troll. I won't even mention my unit time except to say I still have my old TF shoulder patch. The old days are over and done with. We may even need to recruit a Police Superintendant from the U.K., where the majority of police effectively patrol unarmed or maybe require PPOs to work a year in the Cook County Jail to get some street skills. Take care folks and you young officers don't worry better times will come.

I wouldn't suggest recruiting a top cop from the UK as they have the same types (clouted, connected and protected classes) running city police departments there. They also have too many chiefs directing too few indians. Also the same, the young yobs thugs run wild there and they get a slap on the wrist by the courts. When they fear getting caught they will climb a roof and it turns into a long winded stand off and of course cost lots of money and ties up resources for hours. And yes, they have offered the scumbag pizza. To the young thug it's his own reality show and the media covers the play by play. All much to the chagrin of the overtaxed citizens. It's not good for morale but the UK is very liberal and PC. Their new prison has in cell showers (not suppose to use the term "cell" though), lap tops, and each scumbag has their own phone. And very nice gym equipment and field as well as an education complex. Better than being homeless. And just like in Chicago, the taxpayers continues to see their rates increased and service cut backs.
I'm so thankful the Department is keeping us informed on EJ's medical condition...I just hope they keep us informed on his nuptials! And his bride-to-be's career advancement! Hope her study group friends get gold stars from Eddie soon! This Department needs brilliant leadership!

Yep. The scoreboard over at HJ through Aug 31
shows 510 RBIs for '16 versus 474 RBIs for '17, a deficit of 36 compared to last year.
Which averages out to a whopping deficit of:

I drove 2 miles out of my way yesterday, to a grocery store outside the city/county tax abyss.
I spent four dollars on seltzer water and three hundred on other items for a holiday party and general items. I got lower taxes and free bags. My local Jewel didn't get that business and it never will again.
