Taxpayer Revolt?

  • Voters could cap the re-election bids of four Cook County commissioners over their support for the sweetened beverage tax, a new poll found.

It’s the latest in a series of We Ask America polls offering a snapshot into the unpopularity of the penny-an-ounce pop tax which took effect on August 2.
The results:
  • For Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr., D-Chicago, of 684 questioned, 53 percent said they were less likely to re-elect him, the poll found. For Commissioner John Daley, of 700 questioned, nearly 67 percent said they wouldn’t vote to re-elect. For Commissioner Stanley Moore, nearly 65 percent, of 712 questioned said they would not support his re-election. And for Commissioner Deborah Sims, of 718 questioned, 54.5 percent said they were less likely to re-elect.
Of course, the commissioners are counting on memories being short. And poll numbers are notoriously fickle - look at "president" Hillary's numbers.

But this voter displeasure runs a bit deeper. We hear that soda sales are down in Cook County somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-to-60%. That isn't the whole story though. Grocery sales are down 9-to-10%.

That's a massive sales tax hit. Anyone with a car and half-a-brain is going out of county for shopping and saving a bunch of money - not just on soda, but groceries, smokes, gas. Prickwrinkle has stepped into a giant pile of shit and it's rubbing off on a lot of other politicians, too.

Since the sugar tax came in, I haven't done any real grocery shopping. I just jump on the stevenson take it Dupage, and save a boatload on taxes. Depending where you shop, it's only 7%. I figure round trip, I may use 2 gallons of gas tops...guess what, that's only +/- $5.00 The amount of money I save on the various taxes makes up for that $5. and then some.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Every place that sells soda along the border is making out - even signs at gas stations letting you know that your delicious fountain soda is "Cook County tax free." They should have learned from Philadelphia's rollout of soda tax and how that led to job losses and everyone outside of the county doing well.

But they won't do anything until their political life is in danger - and this poll is a nice wakeup call, but someone's got to step up and capitalize on it.

Count me and my entire family in on this. We will not vote for anyone that pushed the Preckwinkle Tax through. We also have not paid a cent of this tax and now shop for all our groceries outside cook county. Just stocked up on $70 of Gatorade and while we were shopping we then purchased nearly $390 in groceries. All this we normally would have bought in crook county. Stupid politicians

You know who I feel sorry for? Those poor bastards that work at Jewel and the Jewel Company because they just might go out of business because of shifts in spending like that. Thank you democrats, killing 1 business at a time.

URGENT NOTICE TO THE VOTING PUBLIC!!!!

The next election when you go into the voting booth and you see a name you recognize as an incumbent vote for anybody but that never stop taxing POS!

Better still, lets get a petition or referendum going to reduce the city counsel by 2/3 and cut their pay and staff in half. Abolish the entire POS crook county bored. While were dreaming and brainstorming take the politics out of the parks and especially the schools! Lets do the same at the airports and give them to homeland security, lock, stock and barrel! Maybe that will stop some of the bullshit the democrats have been feeding us. Maybe it will create true reform.

Restaurants are joining the Revolt. There is a small Greek restaurant, with excellent breakfasts, on the Northside that actually has a sign: BYOS, meaning Bring Your Own Soda. The sign further states that they will provide a glass and ice at no charge for those who bring their own soda. I hope this becomes a Trend. I decline to give the name and address of this wonderful restaurant, because I fear they might be attacked by City Inspectors.

You got that right... I shop in Hammond for gas, bottle water, soda, etc; and don't pay a bag tax...

Chicago; Cook County, and the State of Illinois will never grow economically because of the over-regulation, taxation, and fiscal abuse caused by politicians; in addition, there are not JOBS.

Until they get that increasing taxes and lack of action on systemic issues is NOT the answer, it will take all the 'old boys system' to DIE out of office and fresh new mindsets to take over.

He gets everything except Room cause they don't have any dorms over there. So he'll have to get a room or share a place in the vicinity

Is Whiting safe? It's only 2 miles from south Chicago which ain't safe especially cuz he'd be guilty of walking while white or riding the bus while white

anybody got or had any family members going to school over there? any tips ?

at any rate he won't have to pay no sodie pop tax

if question about safety or evil whiting indiana ain't good, please don't put the post up

Just figured if any body would know if that was a safe place to live, you guys would. Since it's a catholic school am figuring it will be pretty good even if it's a real tiny college & the price is right if he can find/afford a dumpy apt in a safe area

OK, so let's say people wake up and don't vote for this pack of criminals, what then? The choice will simply be a mirror image of the crook they toss out. Not that they shouldn't be tossed, but it's like getting rid of your dog and going and getting him back thinking you have a new dog.

Not only did Clinton win DuPage and Cook, but also Lake, Will, and Kane.

Don't worry, the Republicans will fumble any chance of winning.

Knowing them, they will reverse course and come out in support of the soda tax.
