Cell Phone Tax

We had been misinformed as to the tax - it isn't $4 per call, but the correct info isn't any prettier either:
  • For every cellphone registered to a Chicago address and every Chicago landline, the city will tack on a $5 per month charge — up from the current charge of $3.90 per month.

[...] The City Council still needs to sign off on the idea when it considers the proposed budget Nov. 21. But the approval is near certain with aldermen unlikely to favor a citywide tax increase.

Consumers would see the higher taxes reflected on their bills starting Jan. 1.

[...] The City Council last raised the phone tax in 2014, when aldermen approved a 56 percent increase as part of an effort to keep the laborer's pension fund from sliding deeper into the red.

Chicagoans' phone taxes will have risen 100 percent in three years — from $2.50 per line per month to $5 per line per month.
A 100% increase in three years is ridiculous. But every solution to a democrat is to "raise taxes" instead of cutting spending and/or reducing the size of government.

The tax all started when they built the 911 center and it was supposed to cost X million and went over budget by Y million . So than Mayor Daley started the 911 tax. The 911 building has been bought and paid for and it still continues. This is just runaway give always. I just can't wait to leave in 7 years. Thinking about selling my house now and renting. I can see the housing market having huge inventories as they continue to tax us out of here.

So what is required for the tax to be collected? Is it as easy as changing your number to an area code outside the state of Illinois?
If I have relatives that live in other states can I just change my number to their state prefix and have the billl mailed there and avoid the tax?
Just curious .....something I’ll definitely look into and will anyone know where you can actually read the law after it’s passed?

"If you have ever bothered to look at the fine detail of your cell phone bill, you may be shocked to see how much is going for fees and to pay taxes. Illinois wireless customers pay some of the highest taxes in the nation for their cell phone service. According to the Tax Foundation, Illinois has a tax rate of 17.46 %, which ranks it as the fourth highest among the 50 states (including Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico) Ahhh, but it doesn’t stop there, when you add on federal USF charges that are also applied to your bill, Illinois’ combined rate is 23.92 percent. This makes Illinois only one of eight states where fees and taxes gobble up 20 percent  or more of your cell phone bill." (q985online.com quoting Mark Charvat)

Here is the breakdown in Illinois:
State telecom Tax: 7%
Municipal taxes: 5%
Wireless 911 Tax: 4.96%
Federal USF Rate: 6.46
——————————-
TOTAL: 23.92%

Are you kidding, aldermen not likely to favor tax hike. That would be a first, voting against a tax hike. What you should have said Rahm is afraid to raise taxes again before election. Guarantee a huge hike after he is reelected. Yes I said reelected, the voters are all too stupid to vote for change, they like being surfs.

Easy solution. Make your"billing address" outside of the city limits. I live in the city, enjoy relatively cheap property taxes, for Illinois and do ALL of my shopping in Dupage county. I cannot tell you the last time the city saw dime one of my money.

There is a simple fix to this. I have had a cell phone for many years, as have of us. I simply have paperless billing and use an address out of the city. I have been doing this for years and never have been questioned once. I feel good every month knowing the city gets zero from me in taxes on this. Feel free to give it a shot, just make sure you have paperless billing.

DIck Daley thought about this years ago.
He was told they would pick up and move if they were ever taxed.
They don't need Chicago,
Chicago needs them for all the other taxes each individual pays and
the money they spend in the city.

"Raise Taxes" is the liberal democrat solution to any problem that arises. Of course "some" people are exempt from most all taxes and don't care. Criminals and illegal aliens don't care as they won't pay either. Hell, they're the ones that will benefit the most from higher taxes! Just pay those taxes and keep voting democrat, garbage in, garbage out, as they used to say in the computer world.

Calling from a cell phone doesn't do that and no one will find you. We keep our land line for safety for wife and kids. Also when home I'd rather talk on a landline than hold a hot cell next to my brain.

You must change the area code and give a B.S. address in a place in Oregon or Nevada.

Still, calling 9-1-1 one, two or three times a year and still waiting for +20 mins an understaffed 016 response is bullshit.
The GreekTown ghetto riots are getting better responses.

The 9-1-1 surcharge should be going into the CPD budget and not to OEMC overtime and Sanctuary funding.

Oh pray tell what could that 6.46% Federal USF (remember it is a fee not a tax) be used for?
OK repeat after me, Obama phones.
That's right you now know where Obamas' stash be comes from, as alluded to in the video staring a very colorful highly animated woman a few years past.
It is a percentage so, higher your bill the more they get, that my fellow fee payers is redistribution on the fed level.
Note the fed requires the carrier to pay this, it does not require them to collect it but, they are allowed to as long as it does not exceed what they are paying.
Prepaid plans eat it---the major providers not so much.
Who uses the most prepaid??

Just switched my landline to magic jack, unlimited US and Canada calls plus free magic jack and 1 free year of service $35 for(2 years). You can keep existing landline number but it was one time $10.00(call your provider to cancel after you switch). The best benefit it comes with Android/i-phone magic jack app so if you want, your landline calls (if you are not home) can be forwarded to your cellphone. You just plug magic jack into your internet router and the other cable to your landline phone.
My cellphone paperless bill got switched to my brother's address in Indiana.
