As one of these people that " works inside" I'd be damaged goods on the street. My last arrest was in 2007 and I wouldn't have a clue how things work now. Im not going to lie, working inside is a dream job. POs get the benefits that the clouted supervisors get only so we dont start squawking. Finding enough work to fill the day can be problematic sometimes. Getting uniform and duty availability checks after not having to a uniform in over ten years and not being saddled up with a duty belt feels so wrong. Once upon a time I was a "worker" who led my district in arrests and all other statistics and enjoyed the benefits of a 06 car and lack of supervision. The honest truth is I wouldn't trade what I have now for that life.

The only police officers that should be there our officers that are injure anyone else they need to throw their asses on the streets the same way with caps and that's dollies in the district. Then you can go to the detective divisions and look at them also then you can go to the airports and look at the coppers that sit behind a desk which is ridiculous they need to be out there patrolling the airport also I civilian could easily fill that job . Time to bring back retired police officer's if they want to come back and work the going rate for retired police officer's that retired from CPD it is $30 an hour. My buddy (well ex-buddy now) is the police in Phoenix, AZ. He tells me that their detective spots are like our tact spots; you don't test for it. You just get appointed to it like tact and it's a two year spot. When the two years is up you return back to the beat car unless nobody else wants it and you still want it. He told me all those spots are the same; rotational if it's not a promotional spot. Like SWAT, K9, etc..
At 376 the civilians have to not only swipe but they also have to use the palm scanner. Sure the Sgts can sign them out early for x, y, z but they typically don't as they have to fill out paperwork and document why they left early. What Joe Ferguson and the mayor, BGA don't understand is the OVERTIME issue is only half the battle for the city budget. If you are working the desk/secretary spot and you get an early duck each night/day then half the time your don't need to burn 3 on the end for errands/DR visits because you are off so often. Hence these guys never have to burn any time due and retire with thousands on the books. When I was in 022 the midnight watch secretaries, especially Dean, worked 4 hours at best. Do the sheets then go home. Yet I'd come late taking an hour on the front and there he/she would be with their hand out asking me for the time due slip. Half the time I'd ask for the slip and they'd tell me they had it all filled out already. And if I took 4 on the front? Lol, half the time they were standing there with their coat on (in winter) waiting for me to come to hand in the slip so they could go home. The irony of the whole thing. Turn in your slip, Hurry Hurry so I can take my free 4 on the end.
I'll go one step further. How about reduced pensions for those that work in CAPS or any other inside spot. Why should a "police clerk" who is steady days, weekends and holidays off get the same pension as someone who works the street on weekends,holidays on the 3rd and 1st watch?
I remember I worked in 022 and was an FTO for a year or so until I resigned it. But I remember working one day and was asked by then LT Alexander to train a P.O. for the day. I thought it was a weird request 'for a day' but I of course obliged. She kind of had attitude with me so I just left it alone and went about our day. So at lunch I filled out my time due slip for the 1/2 hour we got when working with a PPO per our contract and she asked if I was taking time on the end today. I said "No we can't take time when training a PPO. This is an extra half hour because I am training you as you're a PPO." She then gets all pissy with me and says "I thought you thought I was a PPO by the way you were training me. I've got 6 years on and ain't no PPO."
I was confused and said I didn't understand why I was asked to train you then. I asked if she came off a LOA or something. She tells me she was at 35th for the past 4 years of her 6 year career and her clout was gone and she got dumped to 022 and wasn't happy. I couldn't believe that I had to train this broad and I of course didn't get my 1/2 hour.
To be honest I can't feel sorry for anybody on this job. Only the new po's with no seniority really have few options. But hey they're new. The rest of you need to bid to other districts or learn how to make friends with supervisors that might take care of you. And no you don't have to kiss anybody's ass just do a little work. But there are hundreds of guys that want to be fricken miserable and work a beat car in the ghetto for 20 plus years and bitch about no days off shitty furloughs and bad supervisors. Here's an idea study for a test in between jobs. Or while down at the station waiting on bs. I'm not saying all the promotional tests are legit but hell I made Dick off the list. Best thing that ever happened to me. Moral of the story if you can't find a tact team, gang team, saturation team, specialized unit, bid to a better district or get promoted off the list then you should probably hang up your fricken holster pal. Listen SCC, enough already! Don't go around talking nonsense about the 35th Street dollies. You obviously have no idea what it's like to work there. You wouldn't last a second week. Let me begin by trying to give you an idea of what we go through working there. First, the parking is hell, sometimes I have to park all the way on the west or south ends of the parking lot because all the front parking spots are taken before I get there at 0930. Then there's the environmental factors, you ever try carrying in a brief bag, lunch bag, and a gym bag when the lot hadn't been plowed or when it's humid outside? We can't send someone from the district to get our bags from the car like we used to when we were in the Commanders Office. Then when you finally make it past the lot and enter the lobby, where you have to rush through so quickly incase one of the Registered Sex Offenders who are there to change their address have a warrant (these hips haven't seen handcuffs in years). All this before I even set out the hazelnut flavored coffee creamer for the rest of my office mates before they arrive. So please don't even talk about manpower issues or any other problems you have at the district level because I was there, for my probation period, remember?

Keep in mind in your insane enough to try and circumvent the system not only will you and others involved be terminated you will be subject to prosecution! Was in a meeting recently and believe it, we have great jobs stay fetal,obey the rules and you will have a good run, but try nonsense it is just not worth it!

these comments and complaints about the inside officers have been going on since....forever!! Despite everything a mayor or a superintendent says about changing this, it never changes. The clouted ones or the favorite ones or the good looking women always end up in desk jobs, sooner or later. And, desk jobs that are really not needed. If you hire civilians you get the ones with clout with the alderman or the congressman and you get over rated , really dumb and really lazy people ( not all of them for sure), and people that you cannot discipline or fire or really do anything about. Get over it. this is the face of democratic government in this town and in this country and in this state. I recall the day they had to unclog the toilets in the HQ building and the plumbers found the pipes full of IR records and print cards.

Why are there entire 25 yr. career police hiding in cubicles "0800-1600", S/S DOG collecting Duty Availability & OT Initiatives ?
If there's one Contract item I'd like to see eliminated - (For Some) - is that all inclusive D/A, and a Insider D 1 pay cut with a title change.
No Police should be permanent, long term clerks which includes Desk, Review and any other Admin.
Take those funds and put it towards the District humps on midnights and afternoons in the form of a Wage Shift Differential.
We all witnessed civilians and perennial desk/admin police who really know the operations better than the Commanders.
Does it make sense to pay a PO 2-3x more than the civilian doing the same type of work?
Who does the job better, which has more integrity and dependability?
Some things don't need to be compromised by questionable civilian agendas, nor the ideology of kneeling POs either.
There has to be a better way to manage Inside Police.
Too many of the incompetent talentless clerks find inside spots way too early in careers and that includes bosses too.

I agree and disagree. After wrestling with assholes and a dozen auto accidents during 20 years... riding out into sunset isn’t a bad idea. Working the desk in a busy district in not all apple pie. You don’t have the luxury of driving away. You can generate 10 plus reports a day. Scumbags come in and want their inventoried property. You have TB dirt bags in the lobby. Sometimes you have to bond people out. Yes, these armed secerataries in the offices are ridiculous. I had no problem with old worn out guys working inside to end their careers... I knew how they felt. Plus, everyone gets there on day.
These poor bastards will actually have to stay inside HQ their whole tour while doing nothing instead of leaving early for a full tour's pay. Most haven't made an arrest in so long they wouldn't even know what to do or how to process one. They should never receive duty availability or uniform allowance anyway. Their uniforms never get dirty or ripped during a whole tour inside unless they spill their lunch on their shirt. All weekends and holidays off and they still complain. Worthless hacks is what they are!

I am assigned to the academy. If they implement that at the academy, then I will have to look for another spot. Sometimes, we do not have to show up for work. That is a perk that we have earned. There have been times that I only show up for work one day of the week. And when I do show up, it is usually a three-hour day.
What perks are there going to be to attract the best and the brightest (with a Master's Degree) at the academy. Something has to change.

Fop's website is outdated with general orders about "Limited/Convalescent Duty . That order is from 1998. For years they have had old General Orders on the website.
FOP needs to make sure the information they as the union provides on a public site be accurate. The new limited Duty general order is Employee Resource E03-01-03
sad that our own Union Fails to post proper orders. Limited Duty is only 2 years or until the officer can perform full duty assignments. Whichever one comes first.

Coming back soon? Not soon enough for the good guys and gals on patrol. By all means, leave that horrible workplace immediately where they don't appreciate you. We in patrol will appreciate having another officer on the watch, and just maybe we can get a fri/sat/sun off without being denied.

To be fair, not everyone that works inside gets perks. I got way more play being on patrol. As a matter of fact, being inside is the most work I have ever done in 16+ yrs of patrol (activity driven). Let's face facts, some of these positions simply cannot be filled by civilians. As far as duty availability is concerned, we don't have contractual rights to be paid o/t if our shifts change start times and we do get details constantly. We were out there on our feet for the whole Cubs detail, BLM protests and more just like patrol. I understand there is abuse and yes, it's not as stressful/dangerous as being in patrol, but to make a blanket statement such as this is simply not fair to all the dedicated, hard working P/O's that support and train the front lines. Bring in swipe machines. Most of us don't care regardless. Stay safe brothers and sisters.

That civilian at HQ is a flat out liar. She has back stabbed and lied to any boss to get her way. I would not put any credence on anything that comes out of her mouth. She ruined the Academy and created such animosity amongst us, that when she left we exchanged stories and realized she was putting us against each other. She woukd make up stories of officers and sgts that i actually felt bad for bekieving her. Now we got along because she isnt poisoning our office. BEWARE...of AC she did thisfor years.
Can this Calea Caluha fix the Department? If so, can they fix my water seepage?
A.C. is poison...she is a story teller. She came to the District on the phone yelling at some one and huffed to tell us that she does everything and doesn't get paid enough...my sister was in the Academy when she was there and left because of all the infighting she created....i went to H.R. to drop off stuff and there she was. Rumor has it that she's dating the director and is looking to be made. HR folks can't stand her.
A girl in our class is in the law department, Not only could she not shoot but never hit the streets.

Never going to happen. Once inside you stay. All smoke and mirrors. If it happens new commander will put her on midnights carried on a beat car and detail her to days being a timekeeper

I work at HQ . Anyone want my job - come and get it !! I have no juice and had to interview for my job . Dealing with the idiot bosses and with the idiot do nothing civilians ( waste of our tax dollars ) . Not all spots are great at Headquarters . Some of us are actually doing work to make up for those who don’t. Trust me - it’s not all that . I’m fed up and will be heading back to the street soon .
