Police officers are taught that if they fire their weapons, it's only for one reason: To kill bad guys. But now the International Association of Chiefs of Police is recommending police learn how to safely shoot warning shots to de-escalate serious situations.
At training day for Troy police, officers sworn to serve and protect citizens were on the practice range with their only mission being to hit the target.
If an officer decides to pull the trigger in a real-life situation, it's to kill dangerous criminals. They practice over and over to shoot for body mass, because they're taught only to shoot when deadly force is required.
But now there's a new way of thinking from the IACP. The organization is recommending police departments nationwide allow officers to use warning shots instead of shooting only to kill.
First of all, we don't fire to kill - we fire to eliminate the threat. If the bad guy gets killed, that's just "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes" as the saying goes.
Second, without full and unequivocal immunity from liability, anyone talking about "warning shots" is an idiot.
You know what old timers used to call their misses? Warning shots. But these days, liability follows the bullet - all the way from barrel to impact.

I might THINK about firing a warning shot and calling it a miss. Not sure I would actually do that, but I can't help but wonder if there wouldn't be less liability doing that than shooting the POS. Sorry, mean to say "citizen".
If there weren't a lack of jobs, ok benefits and decent wages who in there right mind would want to be the police. The job was fun once upon a time.

The IACP (Int’l Assoc. of Chiefs of Police) and CPD must have a student exchange program, because that organization sounds like they have a bunch of triple merit idiots there too.
Why warning shots when I go to work to avoid business.... its a learned skill that is quite easy to master. If you have any idea you are going to deal with assholes on a call-- take the busy streets. This is Crazy! If someone thinks you are not going to shoot them, what is going to prevent them from taking you out? A warning shot is an empty threat. How about this? I used to jokingly tell my recruits that the first two rounds I loaded were blanks. That way I would have have two chances before I made a mistake and shot someone by accident. Maybe I should be a chief somewhere.

I’ll have to run this warning shot idea past an acquaintance of mine. She is a huge Social Justice Warrior, totally supports what the NFL players are doing, even though she hates football, never met a leftist cause she didn’t love, especially gun control. However, she was hit in the head by an errant bullet that missed the scumbag it was intended for. It didn’t kill her, but they can’t remove it from her brain without causing more brain damage so she is left to live every day with the bullet in her brain and the effects of that foreign object.

Lots of warning shots were fired during foot chases in the old public housing south. We all had gun cleaning kits in the locker.
What goes up must come down. That was always the problem with shooting a warning shot. You have no control over a projectile that you launched in the air, especially in a large city with millions of people and two airports. Some copper in a sparsely populated area throwing a shot it the air, is completely different. I'm not speaking for everyone, but a lot of us feel more comfortable shooting to eliminate the threat, with aimed fire.

Oh SCC, you can’t use the words “eliminate the threat”. That’s too harsh. You have to use “stop the threat”. I came on in the early 90’s and was taught that way. During my transition course I used the phrase eliminate the threat and was bitched at by the range guy saying I can’t say that anymore. I was also taught two to the chest one to the head. Did they change that too??
Times have really changed from 30-40 years ago. I started in the 70s and I am retired. I remember when cops could fire warning shots and you could shoot at burglars and stolen cars because they were fleeing felons. Then it changed to fleeing forcible felons. Stolen cars and burglars were out. Then the warning shots were banned. Then came Garner vs. TN. Now de-escalation. And we wonder why the streets in cities across the country are out of control. We've really fallen as a society when the bad guy has more rights than the citizen and victim. Wow.
