Starve the Beast

  • Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle on Wednesday refused to forecast the outcome of a vote next week that would roll back the a controversial “soda tax,” or whether she would veto a repeal if one passes.

But a day ahead of making her budget address to a Board of Commissioners said to be lined up for a close vote on pulling back the county’s penny-per-ounce tax on sodas and sweetened beverages, Preckwinkle was not shy about saying what would happen without the estimated $200 million in tax revenue projected to come from the tax.

“(We will) make significant cuts to public health and public safety, because that’s where 87 percent of our money goes,” Preckwinkle told reporters, following an unrelated press conference on criminal justice reform.
Um....has she seen the sales figures lately? She isn't going to get anywhere near the $200 million projected AND the sales tax revenues are falling below "projections," which are what normal people call "LIES" in order to deceive the voters and raise taxes/fines/fees at a later date because of "shortfalls."
  • Wednesday, Preckwinkle also was clear that, despite an advertising campaign pushing the health benefits of drinking fewer sugary beverages, the tax was always intended as a way to put more money into county coffers without even less-popular options such as raising sales tax across the board or hiking property taxes.

“We chose as a revenue generator a sweetened beverage tax, which had been enacted around the country, both for the revenue and for the health benefits,” she said. “But first and foremost, for the revenue.
So she's an admitted liar. Time to make a real effort to do no shopping in Cook County, spend no money in Cook County, all to starve the beast that is sucking taxpayers pockets dry.

Use this post to list places outside of Cook County to get shopping done. Northsiders can shoot out to Lake, DuPage and points north. Southsiders to Will and DuPage. Southeastsiders can hit Indiana. These places are within 20-to-30 minutes of Chicago and you can buy gas along with your groceries.

Rahm wants to deprive you of overtime and side-job money, so you better save where you can. Shopping outside Cook County shorts Rahm's pockets, too.

Our last trip we $aved $73.00 in Crook County Tax and $aved an additional 30 cents a gallon on gas which paid the gas it took to drive out there! Fuck'em!

Live in the west end of 008. All my shopping is done in Will. Quick trip up I-55 to Lemont Rd and I have Costco, IKEA, the Prominade (outdoor mall), and a Bass Pro Shop. Have some decent places to eat at the mall and very close to it. Takes 20 minutes to get there, gas is cheaper so I refill before driving back.
Other than the big eff you to Cook Co, I shop there because the village of Bolingbrook actually passed on savings to its residents when the mall area was developed. They took away the fees for a city sticker and registration for pets. There were a couple more things the village stopped charging residents for also. Imagine that, develop an area which brings in tax revenue from outside and pass those benefits on to your residents by eliminating fees for other things! Will never see that here in the city.

This fiasco, and it will be remembered as that used the old Democrat Party ploy of: "The Children"! Whenever Democrats want to stick it to tax payers, it is justified because it is for The Children. And this tactic goes back to the Clinton Era. It is never for the Contractors and Lobbyists who make enormous profits; no it is always for The Children. Yet this was interesting in that Michael Bloomberg was willing to pay millions of dollars for an ad campaign supporting the tax. The soda industry responded with their commercials, and that was understandable. But why did Bloomberg come to Cook County and drop all of that money? And why was Preckwinkle willing to admit that she never really cared about the health issue. By admitting that she was lying, she threw fellow Democrat Michael Bloomberg under the bus, and lost any semblance of credibility that she might have had. Does this mean she will not run again? More Questions than Answers here. Baby "G"

Target at 41 and Park Ave. (Edens North to Park Ave.) Lake County taxes, go every other week. Last trip saved approximately $36.00 total on the bill, big shopping with a lot of school supplies, drinks, and they carry adult beverages. On the way back got Off at Clavey Rd and stopped at Bonny's. They had a 15% off the entire store sale. Grabbed some great wine and beer, saved a small fortune. Then I topped off my gas tank at a greatly reduced price and headed home. Ride up, smooth sailing took about 25 minutes, return trip had a little roadwork, 35 to get home. Very nice atmosphere at all of the places and people were very friendly. Enjoy.

They could have been small store owners etc. Now, the only people who buys soda are the very rich or link cards holders. I live in 22. It took me about 20 minutes to go to the Food 4 Less just across the Indiana border on 167th st. Stopped for gas too at about $.25 a gallon cheaper. Sales tax is only 7% on most stuff except food which has NO SALES TAX! No bag tax, No bottled water tax, No liquor tax, No pop tax, NO TAX ON FOOD! I was done and home in a little over an hour and saved about $80! Thanks Toni!

For those who live in or around the Tinley/Orland/Oak Forest/Country Club Hills area - Target @ 191st&Harlem (Tinley Park), Marianos @ Rt. 30&LaGrange (Frankfort, there's a Jewel-Osco across the street too), Berkots @ Wolf Rd&LaPorte (Mokena), Mejier @ Rt. 30& Wolf Rd (Mokena, also a Binny's in the same plaza), Walmart off of Rt. 30 (New Lenox, also has an Aldi in the same plaza), Walts off of LaGrange Rd (Frankfort). All these are Will County. And nearly all of them have signs advertising their lack of the beverage tax. I love it! There's so many more I could list too but going these places will land you near all the other ones too.

We left Cook County in 2000 for Will and never looked back. Now we're looking to Wisconsin in the near future. It's only a matter of time.

For Southwest Siders, 143rd and Bell Road is a great spot: Meijer, Jewel, Home Depot,Menards and ALDI. Oh, and a Speedway gas station as a bonus. Only a few miles further west from Orland Park and the shopping on Lagrange Road, but all safely within Will County.

10/05/2017 12:18:00 AM

What benefit does Orland Have being in Cook County ???

A. 143/Bell is NOT Orland
B. It’s Will County rookie

The Costco in Bolingbrook. It's in Dupage County. The I55 to the 355 and off the first exit. It's a quick ride plus there are many stores in that area to shop at.

Repeal that tax or not, I'm not shopping in Cook County anymore.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that the county is going to lose more tax revenue than it gains thru this soda tax. Any fool can figure that out
The amount of tax lost on grocery sales, gas sales, restaurant sales, etc lost because residents are spending outside the county to avoid the soda tax is more than the revenue from the soda tax

If you are planning a weekend trip to Indiana or Michigan, and you need tires, swing by Tire Rack and buy and have them installed there. They have 15 or 20 bays set up to install tires right there. Lower Indiana sales tax, plus a reasonable "disposal" tax. NOT the Illinois screw job for tire disposal (check your sales invoicing you don't believe me). You can order your tires in advance, either online or on their 800#, they will have them ready to install when you get there. About 2 minutes off of Exit 72 on the Indiana Toll Road, so maybe an hour from Hegewisch if you time it right! :)

They won't be losing their jobs because the tax is repealed. They'll be losing their jobs because of inept, incompetent politicians who refuse to cut waste and who will cater to their political puppetmasters at everyone else's expense. .

They are looking everywhere to hurt people! But yet rahm proudly breaks federal immigration laws coasting the taxpayers billions in total revenue and extra expenses! then rahm steps up and says "Chicago will take in well over 100,000 Puerto Ricans", which is political pandering buying votes Chicago style! The federal government is cutting millions from policing, because of rahm and the other democratic crew because they violate federal laws and brag about it everywhere!

Not sure what you're getting at, but taking in 100,000 Puerto Ricans violates no federal law dumbass, they are all American citizens.
