Waste of Time and Money

  • Inspector General Joe Ferguson said Tuesday he will conduct an audit in 2018 to determine why nearly 10 percent of Chicago Police vehicles — twice the industry standard — are “unavailable” because they are sidelined for maintenance.

    In his annual audit plan, Ferguson said he will also seek to determine why “the average length of time” it takes the city’s Department of Fleet and Facilities Management to service police vehicles is 21.3 days, which “exceeds industry standards.”
Gee, let's see if we can save the IG some time and effort:
  • under-staffing the garages, and what staffing there is under-performs;
  • body work, transmission work, every short of R-Service is off site;
  • no warranty work - all the police "add-ons" void the warranties;
  • no set maintenance schedule - Jiffy Lube could do a better job
There you go Joe. Now you can spend more time investigating cheating scandals.

The corrupt IG will find nothing. Just like he found in the Lts. exam scam. Although he did parlay that so called investigation into an extended contract for himself.

What about the frontline cars? You know the ones that the elected like the mayor Eddie Burke,the treasurer,the city clerk all the exempts and desk dollies Those vehicles are priority number one. The warranty situation could’ve been resolved because ford motor company offers a plug-and-play police to your call where comes factory direct full equipped including the paint with the lights and sirens properly install, thereby vehicles would have a warranty instead of having goober type parts changers butchering the wiring systems and the vehicles and installing substandard junk equipment.

The people that work in the garages are paid extremely well they make more money than police officers and many other city workers, will you work at say a dealership you are on a schedule called book rate and you are required to properly fix the vehicles in a certain amount of time and if you repeatedly cannot do the job in the required amount of time you are suspended been terminated. If also you repair a vehicle improperly you will repair the vehicle on your own time so you make sure the vehicle is fixed right the first time unlike with the city does with the connected parks changers that work in the various garages!

This shit started happening when they closed the area garages and went with fleet management. These guys could give two shits about coppers or the cars we drive.

The extra half hour in the work schedule doesn’t help either. Cars are rotated because of this. When coppers aren’t assigned to the same car each day, they don’t take “ownership” of the vehicle and, consequently, don’t take care of it because they probably won’t see it again for days. Used to be you were assigned the same car every day and most coppers took care of it like it was there own. You also knew who to look for if something was fucked up.

Of course wrecked cars are counted as down for maintenance. That’s all spelled out in the maintenance section of Ford Interceptor owners manual, “Routine Body and Fender Repairs” every 3 months or 3,000 miles. It’s right under “Routine Passenger Compartment Maintenance” which includes de-chicken boning the interior and cockroach bombing.

Been a joke for years. The garages have 2 unions. Electricians and mechanics. Instead of 1 guy fixing something at 1 time the cars have to wait to have the other guy fix it. Napa who has a great parts contract can't get the parts fast enough. They tried to privatize years ago but the politicians resisted. The other side is that coppers tear up these cars and no accountability EVER. THEYCANT EVEN PUT GAS IN OR Wish. Sergeants where are you? And forget the excuses that you work in the ghetto and don't have time. HAVE SOME PRIDE

http://www.fleet.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/police-vehicles/2017%20Police%20Interceptor%20Utility%20Lighting%20Packages%2010-7-16.pdf

So Ford equips them all at the factory,have a friend that works at ford and was told it will be warranted fully by Ford if they do the installations! Ford uses all the newest tested state of the art Ford approved plug and play equipment. Was also told many dept are now leasing police vehicles,and returning yearly for replacement new model vehicles,yes it costs but would bet the savings would be more than the cost and we would have fresh vehicles that are not constantly falling apart being prepared by parts changers at best!

So that is the answer but this way the "manila envelopers" would not be passed and the campaign contributions to the elected would obviously diminish somewhat!

Oh and Joey F. come on man your total lack of skills is pathetic now about that lieutenants scandal you quickly tucked away after getting another big contract and significant boost in pay nad personnel!

Gee - you don't suppose speed humps and potholes have anything to do with maintenance do you? And stop signs and stop lights every 300 feet. Suspension and brakes have no choice but to go to shit. Does any garage have an alignment machine? or is that work farmed out, or just never done, causing $200 a pop tires to go bald before their time.

I'm guessing mechanics are on straight time, not book time, so why work harder than you have to? Anyone who had to only work on the same model car all the time could probably do 6-7 brake jobs a day. But the book says something like 2hrs each, and if they are salary, that equates to only 4 a day. This isn't rocket science....
Not to mention they probably don't pay the parts bill in a timely manner, so they get no parts to install

Police stuff voiding warranties???
Sounds to me like a crock in need of media attention!

Ford Reps ought to be cornered on why converter issues are voided by flashy lights and why there isnt a stand alone fleet warranty for police vehicles BECAUSE they are police vehicles.

It seems to me a purchase agent for a large department ought to be negotiating for just such a thing. Why isnt Chicago doing so?

I would bet that it IS and got a better price because they opted out of warranties. Any takers on that bet??

As an alley mechanic myself, when is the last time you tried turning rotors? They are so thin, they will go under spec if you try. No quality rotors anymore unless you want to pay BIG bucks.-all made in China. I'd rather not have new rotors if the old ones don't pulse.

They are just alley mechanics working there. Ever see them do a brake job? They never turn the rotors.

As the responder said about turning rotors are true . The car makers say they made the rotors thinner and lighter to save gas, but the real reason is to save the high quality steel that is used to make them. A few ounces per rotor times 4 per car per millions of cars adds up tons of steel.

Go by a garage and you probably won't see a brake lathe.

12/22/2017 01:00:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Re: brake rotors

It is actually more cost effective to replace the brake rotors with new aftermarket units than it is to try and turn the old ones on a lathe. Mechanics are pretty expensive on an hourly basis and the time involved usually ends up costing more than a new rotor.

12/23/2017 12:37:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Most, not all, vehicles from the past 20 years or so have the brake rotor as a separate part from the hub/bearing part.

The turning of rotors every renewal of pads was necessary due to the older vehicles having the rotor cast as part of the bearing/hub.

If mechanic takes the time and makes the effort to check the removable rotor for true flat and smooth, then applies a light abrasive to remove the surface gloss, the rotor need not be lathe turned.

Also, warping of rotor out of true flat is the common defect, grooving of rotor surface occurs most often if pads are allowed to wear far enough past the warning screech device, if pads are held to base by rivets. Most pads are held to base by ahdhesive bonding.

Side street speed bumps are the work of good intentions = bad results.

Were they to be reliably formed, true gradual rise and fall, and not often more akin to a turtle's shell, they would still achieve the good intention of slowing side street traffic, without knocking my dentures cockeyed.......
