What Lies Beneath

Lower Wacker and Wabash, directly under some of the priciest real estate in Chicago:

Anyone else remember when Daley would send Streets and Sanitation down there and just pitch all the garbage/tents/piles into the garbage trucks? Kept downtown a lot cleaner and safer.

Lower Wacker is ridiculous. In the summertime it smells so bad, you can't drive through there with you windows opened. And don't get me started on the amount of trash! And remember the scores of homeless people "relocated" from under the viaducts at Lawrence and Wilson? Well some of them have migrated to Foster, both under LSD and Ravenswood.

Too damned many of them are insane and a lot of them are "self-medicating." Others are just garden variety addicts. The best thing to do is get them mental health treatment, but the ACLU will not allow it. They have the right to be insane and crapping on the sidewalks according to the ACLU.

Just watched the news and saw Cook County Sheriffs giving out items to the people who are destroying our communities living underneath the viaducts and overpasses instead of a shelter. Anyone can argue this with me but here are some issues I witness every day: public drinking, drug using, defecating, urinating, garbage and filth strewn about, stolen carts and garbage cans, panhandling, obstructing the feeder/exit ramps, disturbances, batteries against citizens and each other, theft, criminal damage and so on. If the County is so concerned, find these individuals shelter and fund more facilities or take them home with you or let them set up camp on your block. Taxpayers' quality of life should not have this added burden and misery. I know people are in need of mental and drug rehab assistance, but why should people and there families have to be subjected to this? I don't see this going on in any affluent suburbs. Should all city residents be solely punished? Once again, whoever takes issue with my complaints regarding this nonsense: invite these people to go live on your front lawn or in your basement or shut your mouth.

I have traveled to other cities this year and have seen a lot worse. For instance, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland. Streets and parks are lined with small tents and very much out in the open.
I work as a volunteer at homeless shelters in the south burbs. There is a real need for shelter in the winter, the only time these shelters are open. In the summer, just look under the overpass on SW highway and Ridgeland and you will see many people sleeping there. And, as you know there is a % of working poor, but many others are substance abuse or mental illness. Sad, but no help for these issues.I know you might say poor choices and that is true, but if it was a family member of yours you would want to help.

actually you are wrong. Many of these people sleep every night in a different shelter and many do follow the rules. However, there are also a few who do not and are refused entry to any shelter until they meet with the staff to work out a plan. And, still for some that will not work and they sleep outside or in a police station. You can't put everyone into the same bucket

I hated Daley but you are right streets and sanitation would have been there to clean it up. Don't know what is going on regarding streets and sanitation. You raise taxes on services and suddenly become less efficient. My garbage would be picked up at 6am now it doesn't get picked up until 1pm. Here is one way to speed up collection service go after all those single family residences that have more than two trash carts. I have seen a single family homes have up to seven carts. With all the recycling I throw in my blue cart I now only use one trash cart and I have a household with teenagers. I plan on turning in my extra trash cart.

You have to be joking? I’m talking about following rules long before they’ve become homeless. Following rules to prevent from becoming homeless. Shelters have rules and many don’t go to shelters because: (1) shelters have a curfew (2) homeless can’t take shopping carts full of sh-t (3) shelters requires homeless to take their meds (4) shelters requires homeless to wake up at 5am to attend church services (6) they only get 30 minutes to eat (7) they have to take showers to keep bedbugs down. Why follow the rules of the shelter when i can
sleep in the 001st, 002nd and 005th districts and Block the doors when citizens are trying to enter.
