Wrong Address

  • Jennell Cross had just settled into a leather couch to watch a movie in her daughter’s South Chicago home when she heard one bang, then another against the front door. Frightened — it was about midnight Thursday — Cross said she ran to the back of the home to warn her daughter. “Somebody’s trying to break in the house,” she yelled.

Shanae Cross said was trying to pull her mother into a restroom for safety when a swarm of cops barged into the house, guns drawn and shouting questions. The officers moved through the bungalow and tried to handcuff Cross’ 17-year-old brother. The family demanded to see a warrant.

Finally, an officer called out the address on the no-knock search warrant.

It was for a different home on the block.
Mistakes happen and the City will end up repairing the door almost as good as new (not really). But perhaps Phil Cline can come back and run a few of his Search Warrant classes? We seem to recall a portion of it that dealt with checking the address on the paperwork a few times, ensuring it was correct on each piece of paper, using existing intelligence photos to verify the building (Google Streetview anyone?) and when you pull up, someone makes sure the numbers on the building are the numbers on the warrant so the guy on the ram knows what door he's hitting.

We're trying to figure out the Tribune though - get a load of the picture they used to accompany the article:

What subliminal message are the Tribune editors attempting to send? Because we can think of a couple hundred reasons you can't breathe lady.

A nightmare scenario. What if the house was home to a responsible gun owner who decided to defend his family? It may have been an innocent mistake, but was certainly a colossal and dangerous one. Everyone on that team should be taking major time.

Yeah, I can think of a few reasons she can't breath too. I can think of a few reasons that her blood pressure is too high also. So what. I hope the apologies are fulsome and the restitution is generous. Chicago now has at least 3 and probably more people who in a jury would have reasonable doubt about anything a officer would testify to. Is jury nullification a thing up there? This is not a trivial joke of a mistake.

Shit like this happens when you have never-been-the-police 5 year wonders faking their way through search warrants.

The chumps involved should have to pay out of pocket for being so fucking stupid.

That said, expect a few dopes to get dinged as the Koolaid Man in the "I Can't Breathe" shirt had Stupidintendent Kidney Bean on the blower moments after the door was breeched. Hence the extensive media coverage and the Bossholes scrambling to cover their asses on scene by ordering an ET for pictures (I guess the superstars are exempt from bringing the mandated digital camera to a SW?).

Some of you goofs will never figure out that the whole police work thing is way overrated, especially in the current atmosphere.

Hey it happens. I’ve been part of that before. At least they did it the right way in apologizing and doing the city damage claim. Some idiots still think it’s a good idea to write themselves out of trouble on something like this instead of just admitting what happened. It’s a mistake and just a mistake but the handled it good. She may file a lawsuit as happened in mine but it’s a very very easy one to deal with. You’re already admitting you hit the wrong door and already admitting that you went in. It was a mistake and will be treated as such. She will get a little cash but that’s it. It was by far one of the easiest and non stressful lawsuits going especially when you can just sit back and admit it was a mistake and you hit the wrong door. I think our people got 15k and it was quickly settled after a few months with no drama. These guys will ol be fine. Good job handeling it the right way.

I honestly believe that no-knock is a ridiculous tactic, almost designed to get someone shot. Granted, startled Texans shooting officers in the head are rare and flash-bangs in the crib are a one-off (so far). I believe the cost/benefit analysis of forensically recover evidence or even losing evidence all together versus burying someone justifies a calmer approach, even before factoring in community relations.

Rule #1: Don't Fuck Up.

Ya'll Fucked up. So apologize, figure out what went wrong, and fix it so it doesn't happen again. It should go w/o saying that everyone in that situation is lucky to be alive. Had someone knocked down the door to my house - they'd be facing the barrel of a gun.

And all that bullshit about "being the police! With a warrant!" - in the heat of the moment, when you known you've done nothing wrong, you think "this is a scam, total bullshit" so you're taking cover with the firearm, yelling back, doing your best to "know your target" before pulling the trigger - and then discovering it's *someone* in what look like Police uniforms - but again, you've done nothing wrong, so it's gonna be touch 'n go for a bit... and that's when shit can go bad.

Best to avoid the whole situation by looking at the damn address before - double, triple, quadruple check. Send out the guy on the team who isn't a "lowered standards, extra points given on the test" dyslexic to do that so he doesn't violate Rule #1.

On a side note: Did the J/O in the house they were supposed to break down the door at end up getting arrested, or did he see the drama unfolding down the block and say "Hoooooooley sheet! I'm up outa this M/F?" and is in the wind...

I always use a few websites for photos: google, bing, cook county assessor, also the city has a interactive zoning map that is very helpful were you can get a good deal of info( just google Chicago interactive zoning map).I think it's important to use a few sites because google is quite often not accurate, and most of time it blurs out the addresses. But the thing I always try to do is physically drive j doe /c.i by the property and have him/her Id it in person. I understand it's difficult If you are in a district with no covert vehicle or you don't want to burn the one vehicle the district has, but it's something I always do and I have always luckily hit the right door. What you have to take into account at all times is you are taking the word of a person with a questionable background / motives, and they can and will make errors or lie to the officers if they think it will help their situation. So always be very thorough when collecting info from the j doe/c.i. If I ever get a feeling j doe is on bs I drop it.

Despite what we think of dope spots or ghetto houses, we are still basically ramming our way into a private residence when they are not expecting it. Things have the potential to go very wrong and for that reason it should be done thoroughly but this is CPD... we'll just cookie cutter the thing and take the informants word for it.. what could go wrong ? I should blame the Supervisor, totally useless Moron. I bet it's a merit guy so your are forgiven for your moronic intelligence. "Squad this is Sgt Moron, I need a event number for a search warrant" . . . . . . . . "Ops wrong house Squad, this is Sgt Moron again, I need an event number for criminal damage to property." . . . . . . . LOL. Keep it up and soon you will be a Merit LT for sure. The more dumb mistake you make the better chance you get promoted meritoriously.

12/24/2017 07:54:00 AM"

Hey Idiot, it should not happened. There are procedures and protocols to follow. The problem is none of the Officers involved never cared to follow. Even the supervisor didn't care. It could end up bad either for the civilians inside the house or the Entry Officers. They could have end up shooting at each other during the force entry. You have to remember it's a different time now. The old Gun Law in Chicago has been tossed, which means more people keep guns in their home because it's totally legal now. You say it's fine now because nobody got hurt, I wonder where you stand when someone got shot accidentally because you didn't follow protocol. Let's see, the home owner shot the Officer - home owner will not be charge whether the Officer lived or die. The Officer shot the home owner - The Officer will definitely loose his job and go to jail. However the outcome is, the Officers will always be at the loosing end.

Let’s just destroy the one thing we have left on this job..... each other. We are angry and hateful and sadly, we direct it towards each other. Search warrants have been executed at the wrong address long before this happened. Yes, it’s a mistake none of us want to make however, not the end of the world and also done in good faith.

Plausible. Somewhat. However, the high priced attorney would say it was a result of:

Overzealous Hair Gel police startling my clients loving mother/sister/granny/wife to death by kicking in her door because the cops were too fucking stupid to hit the right house.

Cardiac arrest exacerbated by tussling with Big Mama until cuffs were on to "secure the occupants" prior to/during the systematic search for contraband IN THE WRONG HOUSE.

12:56 brings up some valid/interesting points. All present on scene had best had their paper "tight".

No sympathy for whatever you morons reap as a result of this fuck up.

Are you kidding me?!?! That's a pretty lame excuse. There's numbers on houses to either side that a reasonably educated person could use to identify the correct house. The #9 WAS STILL VISIBLE. Quit making excuses for morons, Mr. Retired .38.

Speak of no experience officers being made srgts. Check the Q for the uuw arrest in 10 on midnights.. the newly made srgt with less then 10 years on aka "'I can't breathe' partner kick him in the head", went to a call of a loud party at a house ALL by himself, showing his troops just how unsafe and dumb he is, just like when he "was being choked out" incident.. well he ups it this time and runs into the crowded house after someone he saw with a gun(ALONE), calls out the guy is running out the back so responding officers end up grabbing him. After the dust settles, Srgt 'i can't breathe' sends a pdt message(which now is recorded and can be retrieved later) to all the cars in 10 asking who wants a uuw arrest.... NOW Look up the arrest in the Q and read the narative. Dumb dumb dumb.. not worth it dumb dumbs.

I’m not a LEO. Addresses are a big peeve of mine. While law enforcement should make very VERY sure of what door they are busting through, there are too many buildings or other places where actual address characters are nowhere in sight. This happens when i am trying to find a house, or in search of a business to patronize, or a job site.

I’d like to see some sort of national campaign that encourages people and businesses to post their address in a clear fashion. It’s a matter of public safety (fire or ambulance), and a matter of safety for innocent people who have their houses damaged, furniture smashed, their kids frightened, their dogs shot, all because “oops, wrong address”.

Did you retire without doing anything?! Before executing a warrant the officer should have conducted surveillance of the house for activity. Not to mention entrances & exits. Cook County had a photo of the address they hit. You said the number was missing from the house, was it missing from the house next door?! If they used a CI or john doe what house did he point out? I have many close friends and have worked with great officers from your department. I have great respect what beat officers and detectives do on a daily basis. I know I’m just a suburban cop but wether your fellow officers like it if not your department represents all of us as a whole. I’ll never pretend to think that I have to go through what you guys and gals do on a daily basis but remember you’re not just representing CPD law enforcement you’re representing all of us. Just chucking this incident as oh well the city will pay for the damages and the city will just pay out. The microscope we are under we have to be extra cautious. I’m sure if you post this I’ll get blow back and it’s the personnel why I wouldn’t want to be CPD it’s the politics and lack of cohesion. Fire away !! Be safe bother and sisters

Embarrassing! Officers should not be allowed on Tact Teams until they’ve reached their 5th year as a Patrol Officer. Sgt’s should not be allowed a Tact Team unless they have 15 years on. Sergeants and above should not be allowed to supervise detectives in the Areas unless they were once a detective. Officers should not be allowed to take promotional examines until their 7th year. Where’s the standards?

These guys obviously didn’t conduct any surveillance. They certainly didn’t drive by the house. They certainly didn’t google a photo of the home. Did they even have a meeting before the search warrant?
