No P.O.W.E.R. Test?
That's kind of a stretch - it seems that you still have to pass the POWER test to get into the Academy. That's a rule set forth by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. You don't pass, you don't get in.
However, Chicago actually had a good idea at one point, making recruits pass the test at intervals during training and to exit, meaning a recruit had to maintain some modicum of health while proceeding through training.
But now, it's one and done if our comment sections are correct.

I heard that they were thinking about doing the same thing for the state shooting test. As long as you pass it once while at the range training you pass. They claim that it is too stressful for recruits
I’m currently tying to get hired off of the 2016 list and I can say that at least for the 2016 test and the 2017 test administered in April of 2017 that you have to take at least two power tests. One in the beginning of your process and one “final” power test 45 days before you’re academy start date.
Look no further than the person in charge of the academy. He has blocked standards for recruits, especially physical standards. The academy is in poor shape.
Lol, Rham is pushing a shit house department to the breaking point
The city is going to get what it deserves by voting the same people in election after election.
I remember the whole class being in front lean and rest when a female recruit was sent to find the missing woman. She was in the locker room eating a muffin... a motherfucking muffin... while the rest of the class was being punished for her absence. I also remember the class pushing and pulling her ample ass on runs... leave no (wo)man behind. She's a nice lady but has no businesses on the job.
Cpd is fubar.
So you can come out of the academy in worse physical condition than when you entered. That makes no sense and 3 to 5 years on the job you can be a fat slip. And they wonder why so many police officers are not in shape. They allow it from the first day in the academy. I’m sure even CALEA doesn’t endorse this. So what is the reason and why has this been started
If this is really the case, then the gym instructors can all go back on the street
I have Mandatory Retirement coming Up,I can pass it at a 30 year old levei.
its true
Power to the people. Weeds out 98 pound
weaklings, pencil necked geeks, recent former
dopers. We need a starting point that can't be
meritized. One and done.
There should be some sort of of power test your whole career age appropriate of course but it is embarrassing the physical condition of some officers.
...I have Mandatory Retirement coming up, I can pass it at a 30 year old level... "
Oh my. What a man! I think that I am getting a case of the vapors. I have a test for you. Why don't you come over to my pretty loft? There, after an unlimited supply of my famous white wine spritzers, let's see if you can pass my test for thirty year olds.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
I only had to take it two time, once before the academy and one in. I got much stronger in the academy so the second test was a breeze. I don't know how you can get worse in the academy unless the instructors are no longer having you do push ups and running.
It was 1 to get in and 1 to get out in the 90’s.
What about the recruit / PPO with a cane?
How the frick did that person pass a POWER test yet needs a cane to function daily?
How soon before that PPO is working an inside job somewhere?
I recall an old Auto Theft Detective that had an amputation or issue with his leg because of some illness and the Department forced him to retire early because they said he could work with a cane.
WOW have times changed.
That's okay.
The Chicago Police Department can keep dumbing down this Department.
It affects moral.
But who cares.
We are the laughing stock of the entire world.
So sad.
Wow, can't wait to see some of those 600 pound recruits like they have on that "My 600lb life" show.
Since a Republican candidate for govenor wants to remove the pension protection clause from the Illinois constitution, to reform our pensions, I suppose we should not be too picky about who takes this job.
True story, confirmed by someone in the academy!
Academic standards changed years ago. Recruits had a state test they had to pass (and still do), but also had a city final. City final test was dropped after a box of rocks couldn't pass it multiple times and was fired. Box of rocks sued, claiming protected class discrimination, was given job back and academy no longer had a city final test.
This job a joke. Now Riccio being names 1st Deputy.
Who cares? We did it once during the 80s and most coppers were fine.
Besides, nobody wants this job anymore and we need someone to pay into the pension.
Lower the standards even more!
Nonsnowflake new hire. It is not one and done. At min 2 test before offer and 1 final in the academy.
I heard they were switching the POWER testing to be done on a Wii Fit.
Does this remind you of a cheating scandal?
State rule and everybody just wants to look the other way because too many people fail.
Special Ed best address this don't think those little PPO wont FACETIME AND SNAP chat a fatty recruit not working out.
What does he know he faints talking at a podium leadership start from the top.
I have taken the power test every year for the last 15!
Gained weight, major operations, everything! Some
Say they don’t want the 300$, fine all whobrake ur should be allowed
To take for the lazy people and paid for it!!
Do not trust the new people. The vast majority are the most unfriendly non personality individuals ever born. A group of us old timers back each other up. We don't want these young punks anywhere near our jobs. Same for the new under ten year FTO's.
Why bother with it at all, since Chicago is a crime free zone? As long as you can write a barking dog report up (dogs can't read), or some other nuisance complaint, why bother with the physical crap?
(SARCASM!)
J.J.
No more “Chicago” test at the end? At least that test pushed you just a little, shame.
And yet, when the FOP tried to get the city to agree to allowing P.O.'s to take time out during the shift ( on the city's time ) to go into the stations gym and work out they responded with a resounding NO.
But a lower standard in Chicago. The Chicago Way to insure less then proficient get political job. Patronage at it's finest.
Just how many age levels for test? Do the criminals have age level testing and you only have to deal with those in your age group? Seems fair to me. But as we all know life on the streets is not fair. Stay fit to stay alive your only hope when confronted with a drug crazed felon. Remember no tazeing, shooting, punching chasing, kicking or clubbing allowed. Hope your good at coaxing, and reasoning. Good Luck!
Clout is the only test they need it's the Chicago Way.
Since there is now a foot chase policy, seems to me the Power test is useless anyway.....
Back in the day, I was in the first class of the first hires.(Proud to say I was in the top 100) I came to the Academy way overweight......no power test in the 80's back then......only had to pass before graduation....
The first day, the Lt. came into the gym, called me a Fat Frucking Whale.....and put me on every morning (before class) gym.....in addition to the regular gym classes we had......my class-mates helped me every step of the way, too......
It worked......and that worked well......came in as a size 16......came out in 6 months as a size 10......and I could run, jump, fight, and go over that damn wall, too......
Brains, and some brawn, carried me through to the end of my career......maybe MORE attention should be paid to hiring the brightest this city has to offer.......
I like muffins.
The power test is a joke. They use a toy to simulate the bench press.

Exactly, I do not want ex-cons enforcing the law, nor do I want any pussy's either. It takes a strong force to be an effective force. There is a reason you do 500+ pushups a day in basic training.
This recently relayed to me from a family member directly involved in the investigation of new hire applicants...
Would the media care to investigate this tasty morsel? You fucksticks troll here daily, so here's a low hanging banana for ya:
Applicants who fail any portion of the Power Test can - FOR A FEE - register for a PE class at one of a few of the local City Colleges.
There, they (ostensibly) receive additional physical conditioning from gym instructors/personal trainers until they (in theory) "pass" the power test under the watchful eye of City College employees. Now here's where it gets good...
These applicants get a certificate saying they passed the Power Test to bring back to the Personnel Division and get right back where they left off in the hiring process line WITHOUT HAVING TO PASS THE POWER TEST AT THE ACADEMY.
Another slickster money grab hatched by crooked ass scum for a crooked ass job in the crookedest city in the USA.
PS - FUCK YOU, rahm.
One cannot simply pass this so called "P.O.W.E.R test" when thou needs thy cane to just simply walk the halls. I have seen this so called "Cane Walker", and she displays magnificent characteristics of Professionalism, Obligation, Leadership, Integrity, Courage, and Excellence.
Its 100% true, i know 3 recruits who have all said they removed the power test once in the academy. This includes the chicago power test too.
The state only requires a power test before entering the academy. A final power test is the option of each academy. CPD academy used to have standards at the end of the academy but the current boss removed the standards. He is concerned about stress on the recruits. Times have changed.
I remember a chick from the 14-3 class or something like that that was fucking obese. No clue how it was physically possible for her to pass any power test at any point.
You used to have to take 3 power tests in the academy. now you only have to take one during your stay. apparently know they have to do 3 welcome to the gyms instead. Im hearing people were complaining about having to go back in sweats after they failed a power tests.....

True Fact! After passing written test next step is Power Test. If passed and you continue through all stages you have a Final Power Test before you can enter the Academy.
No foot chases, hands off, stand downs and 7 hours of learning how to respect the communitay...who needs to do push-ups and a 8 minute mile in the Academy?
Although standing for hours at 2-3 crimes scenes a night, 4-5 times a week may require some leg muscle.
Fight the Power.
Stay Fetal.
I heard from a very good source Richard Simmons is being hired as the new fitness instructor for the recruits. He is also designing the new gym uniforns.
I remember having to pass the power test about 3 weeks before graduation and also the obstacle course with the 6 foot wall. If you came close to passing they let you in, but if you missed a few, you were in the breakfast club until you came up to standards. We had 300 recruits in 10 classes and no one failed either test. I remember some of the runs to the Sears tower, History museum and a full hour through UIC. Then 15 to 30 minutes lean and rest. The biggest rule was never eat if PT and DT were right after lunch.
I remember the whole class being in front lean and rest when a female recruit was sent to find the missing woman. She was in the locker room eating a muffin... a motherfucking muffin... while the rest of the class was being punished for her absence. She is probably a Commander or Dept Chief somewhere now.

Now what IFIYGD says all makes sense. Pay to play baby!!!! Can't pass the power test to start the Academy ? No problemo!! Simply pay to get a passing certificate because you won't have to worry about taking the power test to graduate!!! Now the $64,000 question. Who's getting this money????

Final power test is given within the two weeks before entering the academy. Took it on a Saturday, passed was told to report to personnel on the following Thursday to fill out employment papers and started the academy 10 days later

What’s the story. Did she get injured in the academy? No way can they allow a special privilege. Candidates turned down at the power test would sue, maybe even a class action. You would think even clout has limits
Came on

How can this be. I thought all the P.O./nurses were sent back to the district and are no longer working in the medical section
She might have a better understanding if she spent a few years in a beat car, but that ain’t happening
