You're ALL Qualified

Who is steering this disaster into the iceberg?
  • How about the latest FTO volunteer update first us regular patrolman are too stupid to be FTO's because we aren't on the Sgt list. A week later nobody volunteers and now we are magically qualified to be volunteer FTOs. Wtf is headquarters smoking write this down "nobody gives a fuck about the FTO program". Stop with the job announcements nobody cares. Either make it detectives pay or face the facts that nobody will apply.
Nothing like setting a bar, then removing the bar completely when no one wants the job.

Let's face it, the costs going into become into becoming a recruit... moving to a Shithole to a ton of money to get a place that is decent, rent-- $2000 to $2400, city sticker, becoming the most hated guy on the block, having to stand at attention for Rham-ulus and Kidney Beans, gee, no thanks

It has been about a year since the liars in the fto section brought every fto to headquarters for b.s. training and to promise ftos a whole list of crap. Where are the incentives? Where is the follow up on promises? It is all crap and lies. The fto sgt. Hasnt kept a single promise and the districts laugh when you ask for a incentive that is in a b.o.p put out by the dept. Only a fool would be a full or part time fto. Its as bad as it was 10 or 15 yrs ago.only clouted ftos get merit so even thats garbage promise.

Just like all those Lieutenants who accurately filled out an application for merit Capt. They were all qualified. Except thos that made mistakes in the process, and there were a good amount of those. Late filings and inaccurate or improperly filled out forms. Otherwise, all are on thr list.

Allows for the easy transition from merit promotion to merit promotion in preperation for yes, another merit promotion.

I’m going to step up. This is an opportunity for workers to team up with PPO’s and be a good influence. Too many guys are dogs. The activity they come up with is abysmal. This an opportunity to contribute to our communities. 95% of who are on the job couldn’t wait to get our call and when I got my star and ID I was breathless! In the academy our homeroom’s undeclared motto was “We are One with our City, Our Leaders, and the citizens we serve” . Even after the years have passed we still have yearly get togethers with our HR instructor! Five of our classmates are lieutenants, 3 are sergeants and 4 are detectives. As for me I enjoy being a beat copper in this wonderful city.

Remember we weren’t promised anything except the chance to serve. So instead of asking where is mine - let’s ask what can we do for our city in a garden.

I know it's been an issue for years before, but with civilians coming into the department and running these , yes RUNNING, these different units( Sgt.'s and Lt's. have to report to and are not in charge unless these Directors or Asst. Directors approve anything) , this Department is ultimately going to be run as it is now in many units ,by civilians. ****And civilians don't see things let alone know how things are done when it comes to Police work. They're not Law Enforcement, Yet they "know it all".... W're fucked beyond repair in this corrupt ass shithole of a city.... can't wait to retire in a few years...

Why do you think the majority of FTOs are no-time-on-the-job, never-been-the-police knuckleheads? Because anyone with time on knows better. They know, pensionable or not, it's not worth the aggravation and liability.

This is an important function of CPD and another example of the city trying to get by on the cheap. If you believe any of the DOJ report it says proper training is imperative and more training for veteran officers is needed. It also says more supervision is needed. Yet no training for vetran officers and a crap FTO program. The city simply doesn’t want to spend money where needed.

They'll never get it right. Continue to insult the men and women of the department. They identify the extreme importance of the position in developing great officers, yet we don't invest in the same. We offer them the best cars. What a joke. I'm all for making it Detective pay year round whether or not they have recruits. Glad to be leaving soon.

FTO?! With 14 years on this job I’m seriously considering throwing in the towel, selling everything off, moving, and finding something else to do with the rest of my life. Would be a rough transition, but I don’t think I wanna see what the remaining 6 - 15 years would bring me here. All for a pension that’s hanging by a thread anyway. FTO.... I can’t imagine coming on to this job current day. All right kid, we’re gonna fill out your first TRR.... good luck!

Train and qualify to: speak a foreign language, carry a rifle, basic first aid,field training officer, or crisis intervention training, etc... % of pay/pensionable.
Or

I just don't understand how an officer with 3 or 4 years on the job with an 18 month probation period is going to be an FTO to any recruit. They simply do not have the EXPERIENCE? This is one of the numerous reasons why this department is so F___ed up!!!

The FTO program is a joke. There is no system at how they want the new guys to be trained. there is no incentives, although promised the world. There was talk that it would be made a different name. The juiced become fto's inorder to be promoted to sgt. It's amazing, but you see the new fto's who have no idea what to do on the street, because they have been inside, but those are the ones are connected and will make sgt first.

In the past there were some REALLY GREAT FTOs. Both Men and Women. They knew how to be the REAL POLICE and were street smart. Taught the new officers well. Past 5 yrs or so-shit.

Why detectives pay? The FTO work does not equate to detective work. You are still doing normal patrol duties as an FTO. I understand you have to judge and grade rookies, but that is why you are paid the D2 grade; and don't forget the shiny new tablet you get (that doesn't work for shit). Bottom line, I don't think anyone should accept an FTO position (no matter what scale they pay you at) until the department stops the witch hunt, and starts backing the officers. Now, let the name calling begin: Wahhh he said I don't deserve D2A pay..Whaaaa

First off i just made dick and i feel sorry for fto's I really do they get treated like crap, but they don't deserve dick's pay especially in the summer. The detective job is so overwhelming and involved its not funny. It's a lifestyle that I'm just starting to get used to. Being an fto you just work 8 hours with a newbie which is dangerous because you don't know how how they will act in adverse situations but that's why you get D2 pay. it sucks people want to work in units and with there partner thats why people don't want to do it. But this is my suggestion give fto's first dibs on furloughs, time off etc. I remember when i was in a district I never could get a day off. let's start with that.

A couple of comments state an fto's job isn't comparable to the work the assignment of detective entails, and the assignment of FTO doesn't merit the same pay grade. Both positions are very different from each other and both hold an equally integral value to a police department. However, I pose the argument that several thousand officers take the detective test. The responsibility and overall function of the assignment of FTO clearly isn't a position many are willing to take on. This is evident by the department offering 4-6 tests in the last 2-2.5 years with minimal turnouts. This has essentially turned FTO into a volunteer position. You can offer all the incentives you want but the only way you can garner appropriate interest (at least 1,000-2,000 officers taking a FAIR exam to have a quality canditate pool), is to increase the pay grade. Yes the position of FTO does deserve a higher lay grade. A few really do want to help and do their best to guide and mentor new officers and do a nice job of it (those individuals would probably be more appropriate choices for your merit promotion rather then your typical who you know who you blow affairs). But hardlly anyone is willing and capable of taking the assignment, and that in my humble opinion is why there should probably be consideration to increasing the position of FTO to D2a grade pay.

Relax Colombo dont get that cheap Jcpenny sport coat in a bunch.The original poster meant that if they dont up the pay they wont get volunteers all you gumshoes stop being jealous its the truth more money and pensionable is the solution.They still wont get unlimited overtime like you guys or be able to take 3 hour lunches so relax.It doesn't degrade your shiny star any less than the closure rate you guys currently hold.They have promised the world and never put it in writing so now they are seeing the result of the failed promises.

is a foundation the rest of us non FTOs can build on.

When I first came on the job, FTO's (Patrol Specialists) had pay parity with Detectives. Make it a permanent D2A position regardless of whether they are currently training recruits, and qualified, motivated patrolmen will happily apply for and take the job. As long as field training is an "afterthought" on this department, we'll continue to have young inexperienced patrolmen doing stupid, dangerous things, getting sued, getting fired, and in some instances facing jail time. Eventually, somebody will figure it our, but I'll be LONG gone from this department and city by then.
