- I’ve been on SWAT for almost three years now. How fucked up is our SWAT team? Judge for yourselves. One of the new guys ended up in intensive care after “defensive tactics” training. This brand new SWAT officer suffered facial fractures, three broken ribs and a collapsed lung. This sadistic SWAT Sgt enjoys beating up on new guys during training and he makes the new SWAT candidates beat on each other so he can video tape it.
Even the Lt and other Sgts are scared of getting their asses whipped. I did not sign up to get a beating by any white shirt. WTF!!
- SCC this is 100% true!!!! It did happen on the 28th of February at Homan Square. The Sgt that did this, has had serious psycho issues that manifest into aggression towards POs including females. There are CR#s going back approximately 20 years ago. Please start a separate thread on this incident. The LT and Sgts are in serious cover up mode as this kid is lying in intensive care at Northwestern Hospital. Several of us at SWAT are contacting the union and even going as far as to contact the media
A facial fracture could be a training accident. A broken rib might be a training accident. A collapsed lung is a stretch to be a training accident.

What next?? We have a gang unit that was dirty. Which promptly disappeared. We have a hard working guy in 06 that likes to blow hospital prisoners. I still do ISR's and real pro-active police work. I was in a TACT unit but couldn't adjust. I ride the beat car and help the new kids on the job.

I remember being in the academy and failing the passive resistor portion of the test, so I had to come in the following morning with one of the Gym Instructors. He was on his knees in a dog position and I had to try and get him to comply. I could not get him up, I didn't realize that all I had to do was simply ASK HIM. I hit the Gym Instructor as hard as I could with an open hand strike to the head thinking that might be what I'm suppose to do. Needless to say, he sent me flying...never forgot that lesson!
Why such violent training? When you call SWAT, it's usually over before they even show up. Usually a minimum half an hour at the least for them to arrive.

One of the best Sgts on SWAT kept telling them about this fraud. He was the only Sgt to stand up against this psych case. He was completely ignored. He got so disgusted he resigned from the team and went to 019.

This ain't nothing new in the 70s there was two pos at the old real academy on Obrien St. they taught defensive tactics and managed to break a few arms. The department had to get rid of them because of the expense of the injuries and they had to pay the recruits and the cost of putting them threw retread school to finish the academy. But in those days you were the police not like today.
How could Carter not know about the incident? Either way it sounds bad.

Sadly, NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. This is NOT A REAL POLICE DEPARTMENT!!!! You can’t run any kind of major entity in such a toxic environment like this thing of ours. Since before WWII this city and all its depts were filled with and have now been destroyed beyond recognition because of politics, clout and extremely undeserved favoritism. At least from the 1960’s- 1990’s the police were still feared, respected and were able to do their jobs without complete fear of going to prison for the most basic type of police work you could do. Today’s world is a putrid, festering, tumorous cell that is light years away from reform or legitimizing in any way. No training right out of the gate, clout moves flaunted and revered, promotion test SME’s that literally don’t even attempt to hide passing out the answers to who their fucking, etc... Guys who you knew in high school who couldn’t tie their own shoes and chew gum at the same time are now scoring in the top 25 on those promotion tests. All that was at least tolerable to some extent because the job was still fun up till 5-10 years ago. Now theirs cameras literally everywhere, clout has never been more in your face cuz a certain segment of the dept feels it’s “their time”, a states attorney and general public who despise any kind of authority especially the police. A city run by a mayor who sold his soul to the ACLU and COPA who have proven time and again their only mission is to nurture their snowflake, white guilt, suburban mind set by demonizing the police and ruining as many lives as they can.

Looks like Rahm is trying desperately to cover this up. SWAT is like a college frat house where the hazing is covered up! The fact that they sit around all day like fireman leads to bad behavior. This is criminal conduct on the part of the Sgt. and anyone else who knew and failed to stop and/or report the conduct.
Serious question. What kind of training is this supposed to be anyway? When or how often does swat ever get into physical altercations? With all that equipment they wear, they usually make it clear that they do not chase bad guys to avoid contact with them. So why is this insane sergeant holding physical combat type training for swat?
Union is useless Garza has told PO's in units if they don't like it go back to a district. That's who is supposedly working for us and has our best interest....absolute joke!

What does anyone expect to be done about this? That poor guy in the hospital will get a visit from eddy after rham feels some heat from this. That’s probably about all. Eddy will ask the P.O. “where do you want to go?” We can only hope and pray the P.O. does the right thing. He should laugh in ed’s fat face and then watch as he slowly walks out of the room looking dumbfounded and bewildered like he usually is. Then the P.O. makes millions of dollars after a quick settlement and lives a much better life than any stroke on swat. Good luck brother! Be bold and get it done. This once proud job is just not worth it.

However once he recovers he will never have another financial worry the rest of his life as the law suit he will file against the city and department will take care of him, not to mention civil suits. This department is horrible when it comes to ‘legitimate’ people in training positions. The Mounted unit is an example of this, in the past few classes Officers have sustained bad injuries including broken backs and yes riding a horse is dangerous but new riders should not have all of those issues if the instruction is proper and the horses have not been sitting in their stalls for months or sometimes years.

It’s clearly obvious that a swat officer was severely injured due to unnecessary hazing. Instead of complaining, all the swat members should transfer out of that unit but this won’t happen because everyone will sacrifice their dignity to stay off the beat car. In their little head they believe bidding to another district is taking a step back. If they really support this injured officer. Everyone should contact internal affairs and leave the team.

I am a big proponent of combat training. It should be taught diligently in the academy. That being said, by the time an officer makes SWAT in his or her career, that ship has long since sailed. This isn't like out of a super hero movie where this team gets in life or death brawls where they storm a building and have to fight/disarm several terrorists in some kind of game. I predict one of two things will happen - 1. The injured PO will be offered a promotion in a nice spot somewhere, or 2. The injured PO will win a lawsuit worth millions. They will hide the all of the supervisors responsible for this scandal of course, or they will retire early with full benefits. Business as usual in this beyond fucked up department.

So, I have a different perspective as a former Infantry officer and PO in Chicago. Change the qualification for SWAT.
1. Run 2 miles in 11:54 or under
2. 82 push-ups in 2 minutes
3. 92 sit-ups in 2 minutes
4. 300 meter target with AR-15 (20 shots must hit body 18 times in 2 minutes)
5. Fist fight with another PO for 2 minutes (no gauging in eye, no biting, and no testicle cheap shots)(Winner gets SWAT spot /loser goes back 3rd district midnights)
The winners are SWAT material as far as I'm concerned

Will always look at SWAT in a different way. How can any officer feel SWAT has their back or protect them if they can’t even protect one of their own in a gym? I’ll take my chances with the beat guys who are on scene when the incident happens, not with SWAT who shows up 30 minutes later after the beat guys have the scene contained. By then these bad asses have the badguy or bad guys outnumbered and outgunned.
Not one exempt visited the PO in the hospital. The piece of shit SGT didn’t go to the hospital to visit him. He decided to go practice his shooting in McHenry County. This freak show goes to McHenry County 3-4 Times a week using his take home squad car. He uses thousands of rounds of swat ammo. When we ask for ammo he tells us that we are low. He’s a douchebag!!!

Just so you know, if "training" results in facial fractures, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung, you're training wrong. Also, the "trainer" needs better training... or better meds. Anyone who defends this as just a simple training accident, or par for the course in "combatives" training, is a moron, or has their nose so far up the ass of the tough guy Sgt that they can't see when he's out of control. This isn't an accident. This isn't natural or common in a training environment. You don't go full speed, full power, causing multiple serious injuries to someone on your side. This was a guy who's completely out of control, and can't take it down a notch for training, OR it was a guy trying to send a message or prove something to someone. Retaliation, hazing, showing off, roid-raging, or whatever, all completely unacceptable. Defending it just makes you look stupid.

Can someone explain the martial arts credentials of the sergeant? I am curious to know where he has obtained his rank if any along with what disciplines. God bless you CPD and the injured officer who I wish a speedy recovery.
Someone who really knows what they’re doing is generally the safest person to get into a fight with. I was in a mixed martial arts class and the head instructor could put anyone of us to sleep or make us tap. I was probably 6 inches taller/ 25lbs heavier than this guy and I was often his sparring partner—never got anything but a bruised ego. This Sgt sounds like he’s sucker punching dudes that are trying to learn

This department is horrible when it comes to ‘legitimate’ people in training positions. The Mounted unit is an example of this, in the past few classes Officers have sustained bad injuries including broken backs and yes riding a horse is dangerous but new riders should not have all of those issues if the instruction is proper and the horses have not been sitting in their stalls for months or sometimes years
There are smart ways to train people, some injuries may happen, but should not be this excessive. I tried for the Mounted Unit, didn't get it, if this is true I am glad. I have been riding for maybe 15 years, have fallen off, never been badly hurt. New riders, and I include myself, need safe horses, known a s," babysitter horses". No joke. It's too easy to get hurt. As for the Seat Officer, I hope he will be ok. I hope this will be investigated.

That sounds about as bad as the Mounted unit. The lazy “trainers” aren’t certified at all and they put trainees on untrained horses that at times have never left their stalls for years. Good luck if you’re thinking of signing up, more than a few in riding class have had major injuries over the years. The last three officers that were made “trainers” couldn’t control their own horses on the streets but somehow managed to be assigned as a trainer with less than five years in the unit. Department runs on nepotism, clout and bullshit.
