Hoodwinked?

  • The 23rd floor of the Daley Center courthouse was pitched into confusion Wednesday night by a jury’s response to a legal mechanism little-known to the public — a “special interrogatory,” a specific question posed to jurors.

Capping a closely watched trial, jurors found that Chicago police Officer Robert Rialmo fatally shot 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier without justification and awarded the family just over $1 million. But in answering an interrogatory introduced by the city’s lawyers, jurors held that Rialmo reasonably believed he had to fire to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm. Faced with the contradictory findings, Judge Rena Marie Van Tine ruled for the city and Rialmo, wiping away the verdict and damages.

Jury foreman Dave Fitzsimmons told the Tribune that jurors believed the shooting wasn’t justified and didn’t think their answer to the special interrogatory would negate the verdict.
Remember, should you ever be sued, you're relying on the wisdom of 12 people too stupid to get out of jury duty. This guy proves it 100%.

In a Civil Trial a unanimous decision is not necessary to establish fault; majority rules! So this entire jury must have been Chicago Public School graduates, because according to the Tribune it was an Unanimous decision! It would be interesting to know what these jurors did for a living, and how many were actually Chicago residents. Also note, the "Shitty" retained a private attorney, which should be a well deserved insult to the crew at Corporation Counsel. And how much did this attorney's firm donate to Rahm's campaign War Chest? "Resist", sign the petition to deny Rahm a 3rd Term. We cannot afford 4 more years of Rahm. Baby "G"

Glad the Officer's action was vindicated by the judge.

We need Mental Health Reform.
The police should not be our first line mental health analysts.
Our Jails should not be our asylums.

Both those people should be alive today, but the root cause of their deaths was not the police, or the Officer's gun.

An assailant armed with a deadly weapon, assaulted a Police Officer and was shot. Again, assailant armed with a deadly weapon assualted a Police Officer and was shot. Case closed.

Legrier's attorney and the media keep harping about the distance. Weren't we all taught the 21 foot rule that the FBI uses? Maybe the defense brought this up during the trial, but the media sure hasn't reported if came up during anyone's testimony.

Juries are supposed to follow the law instead of making up their own rules.

Jury nullification of the law only works if no one submits special interrogatories.

So, some are unhappy with the result because the Defense submitted a special interrogatory. That's what a good defense attorney is supposed to do.

It's not just people who are too stupid to get out of jury duty. The bigger problem is that there are people who try to get on juries just to vote guilty or not guilty based on who the defendant is. If you're the police, they vote guilty because they hate the police. If you're a black or brown criminal, they vote not guilty, because there are too many black and brown people in jail, and the police probably set them up, or beat a confession out of them. I'd rather have a jury of morons than a jury of people who want me to go to prison simply because of my chosen profession or my race.

Seattle cops flee the force in 'mass exodus' due to frustrations with city's politics, report says

By Kathleen Joyce | Fox News

At least 41 cops have left the Seattle Police Department this year, many of them reportedly citing frustration with the city's politics and a perceived lack of support from local officials.

Though documents showed some officers left the force due to retirement, a source in the department told Q13 FOX some 20 officers left and sought employment at other law enforcement agencies.

The source also said younger officers "don’t feel appreciated" and the number of those leaving who felt “frustrated over city politics is higher than usual.”

“Worker bees on the street, they don't feel appreciated. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” the source told Q13 FOX.

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT SEEKS SANCTUARY AT SEATTLE CHURCH: REPORT

The Seattle Police Guild, the police labor union, which includes “all of the officers and sergeants on the Seattle Police Department,” according to its website, called the departures a “mass exodus” that would affect safety.

“Less officers on the streets, less safe for the citizens -- and when you have all these officers you have invested all this money in and they are leaving for Tacoma, Olympia, Pierce County and Snohomish County,” Seattle Police Officers Guild Vice President Richard O’Neill said.

He added: “I have never seen the number of officers who are leaving and the way they are leaving.”

May have won Round 1 but forgiving weasel Rahm’s will settle the appeal - by the end of the year twice the amount for that additional fambly distress.
Jury was rushed and made a hasty decision, grounds for an appeal.
The lugnuts were quick to give LaGreed Estate $1.5 mil and shaft RR.

How do they pick a peer jury, were half of them angry deranged bat wielders?
Tainted.
And jury duty doesn’t even pay minimum wage.
Bougus.
Raise it to $400 an hour and it will attract the best abstract thinkers Cook County has to offer.

The next jury will be sent to mandatory Settlement training at City Hall prior to the commencement of the appeal.

Yes, the judge made the correct call, but the best part is that the jury had awarded “only” a million bucks. After the lawyer got his end that would have been about $660,000 for those two mutts to split. It would have been gone in 60 days. The lying father and absentee mama turned down an offer from the city of $8 million. Leaches. They caused the woman’s death.

“Too stupid to get out of jury duty”

Nice attitude. But then you’ll bitch that juries are comprised of morons. Which do you want? It can’t go both ways.

Truly smart people should be honored to participate in one of the greatest and most important elements of a democratic society, which is a jury of peers. Those who think they are too good, or too smart as you would imply, are a scourge on our judicial process and one of reasons that cases are ruled upon with little regard for rule of law.

Lord knows in a sanctuary city we can't have that, just ask Kim and Toni. Yeah... Sitting in Tha jury room slowly
asphyxiating because of the meanness,
stupidity and willful ignorance embodied
in "tha' peoples just-us" here in Chicago/
Cook County?

Look no further than the destruction and removal
of Civics and Government from school curriculums.

Ask the typical schlub queuing up for jury
duty at 26 & Cal about the "duties" of
true citizenship and wait for their reaction...

"...Huhwhohadsaidsump'n?"

So say you're the unfortunate 1 or 2 of 12
in that jury room? What on earth do YOU DO?

These are fully formed "Grown Folks" sitting in judgement
of some poor slob... Now magnify this concern many-fold
when it's a Copper sitting in that hot-seat.

Truth:
Policemen ARE, for the most part, without peer
when it comes to reading and applying criminal law.

Lawyers excel in bending it to suit their own purposes.

Judges are lawyers.
Too many judges in Cook County have sold out
to local political interests and agendas.

"It's YOUR hide...
How much do you value it?"

...Greatly, thank you.

Which is exactly why no Policeman in their
right mind and if their own volition would
EVER opt for a jury trial in Chicago/Cook
County.

As for being smart enough to avidly avoid jury duty?

"Jury of your peers" is an absolute misnomer in this town.
Most intelligent people realize this.

This Fitzsimmons slug?
Isn't it terrifying that he was
considered "the smartest one
in the room" in order to be the
foreman?

Gotta go before we start "feeling hoodwinked."

The city contracts with private attorneys, as many cities do, because this could deplete the resources of the Corporation Counsel. The Corporation Counsel attorneys are good, but may not have resources to prepare for a big trial.

What you do is be the 1 voice of reason and common sense, even if it means a hung jury and mistrial. That’s the least you can do to stand up for what’s right. I could easily sit in a room of 11 dindus, look them all square in the eye, and tell them to pound sand if they tried to screw someone over just because he’s a cop, and not make considerations for right and wrong. And anyone who can’t do that and would rather be “too smart for jury duty” should be ashamed to wear a badge. Grow a set already, you lazy pussies.

The concept of a jury of your peers, to be a source of justice, requires a vast majority of those selected for jury duty to not be assholes.

Given the abundance of assholes to be found on every listing of potential jurors, in this city and county, the ONLY chance of a jury being not made of all assholes is for the not assholes to not avoid jury duty.

The obstacles to actually being on any jury are sufficient enough to practically assure an all asshole jury, so, adding the avoidance to this = juries of assholes for perpetuity.

That ain't good.

Thus, you are spot on.
