Leaving Town

  • Each year, roughly 40 million Americans, or about 14% of the U.S. population, move at least once. Much of that movement includes younger people relocating within cities, but it is trends of Americans moving to warmer climates, more affordable areas, and better job opportunities that have largely determined migration patterns in recent decades.

Because of those long-term patterns, as well as the recent period of economic recovery, cities in some parts of the country have lost tens of thousands of residents. To find the 50 U.S. metropolitan areas that have had the largest net decline in population as a result of migration between 2010 and 2017, 24/7 Wall Street reviewed population figures from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program.

The 50 cities where the most people are moving away from can primarily be found in the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast, particularly in states like Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and New York. Among the cities where people are leaving in droves are places such as Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, New York, and Los Angeles.
And right there at the top of the list? Well, bottom actually since you have to scroll down to find #1:
  • 1. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Illinois-Indiana-Wisconsin

Population decrease due to migration, 2010-2017: -296,320
The numbers are a bit skewed since they're using a pretty big swath of geography, but any growth in the surrounding areas can safely be assumed to have come from Chicago.

Sell now, before the collapse.

It may not be this year, or even next. But when the trend turns it will be a collapse that makes the Bears look solid. Taxes are too high, debts are too large, the public schools are shitty, and crime is getting out of control. Why exactly should someone buy a house in this town?

If they just did Chicago by itself the numbers would be a lot worse. They lump Chicago with some of the Suburban and South Indiana where people are fleeing to. It is a lot worse than they are saying. The people with money have invested heavy in the Chicago area. So they don’t want to panic the goofs who don’t believe this is happening. If everyone bought into the bottom is falling out than things would escalate faster. I just can’t wait for me to put in six more years nd I’m gone. The bottom is really falling out! The politicians mismanaged the city.

It is true that Chicago does not have balmy moderate climate that you find in states like Florida, Texas or Arizona.

Balmy moderate? It is an illusion that the heat is moderate in Texas,Florida, and Arizona year round. The main reason people move there is for the tax advantages, period.

This stat ignores the Illinois (Chicago and Cook County) residents moving to Indiana and Wisconsin. If they limited it to Illinois only the numbers would be much worse.

Come to Indiana where they raised gasoline taxes by 10 cents a gallon to fix the roads. Pot holes the size of turkeys at intersections and patching the roads they patched 6 years ago. Raises for the Police in a popular Indiana city were so scarce they could not stop officers from fleeing to other muni's to keep up with the 8 percent property tax increases and were losing manpower that they would not replace until the Chief begged the council to give raises and hire officers. It aint all it seems.

I retired in 2017.

We put the house up for sale in Sept. Had to lower the price twice before we even generated any interest and this was on the north side near Harwood Heights and Norridge.

It finally sold in Dec. The morning we packed the car and drove away for the last time was a great feeling. Even though we loved that house and the neighborhood, it was just getting to damn expensive to keep living there.

Moved to Texas. My vehicle sticker cost me $74 (Chicago....$139.48). Plates are $50 compared to Il at $101.

No state taxing on the pension. No state taxes on income (wife works). No tax on groceries.

Taxpayers are leaving.
Sanctuary seekers (Dem voters) are coming in for the public aid.
We probably have more “registered voters” than a true legitimate counted census population.
So no empty housing will ever exist as far as Section8’Arena is concerned.
Colonize the Ward with unemployed deadbeats.

Ever wonder why there’s No Vacancy in those flophouse motels along Mannheim Road?
Occupied by Section 8 - and that’s the suburbs, holding City votes and likely didn’t change their addresses anyway.

The numbers are actually even worse, since so many of those moving into Chicago are illegals and other leeches while the bulk of those leaving are net taxpayers. All residents are NOT equal, and the ones that matter for the health of a city are the ones that work and pay taxes. A city can have massive population growth but it means nothing if the growth is due to an influx of deadbeats.

That is classic liberal logic. They think that all people/cultures are interchangeable and that all that matters is the number of people and not who they are. For example, they think filling Europe with northern and sub-Saharan Africans will somehow magically be the same as if the population increase was due to natural growth of German, French, Austrian and other European natives. Delusional.

The people that are leaving are mostly "urban" so what is the issue? Should make CPD's life easier.

According to the data, Chicago is attracting young, rich professionals at a high rate, not "illegals", as one misinformed commenter above seems to think.
It is poor Blacks who are leaving at much, much higher rates than before.

It may not fit the narrative, but Chicago is in fact doing the best out of all the areas in Illinois and most others areas in the Midwest. Chicago suburbs, by contrast, are have much more net out-migration and less job growth.

When my fucking property taxes drop noticably, and NOT because my fucking assessment, based on accurate market value, has dropped noticably, but because these thieving prick motherless fuckers have been rendered impotent by whatever means is effective, then, maybe, your puss filled bullshit comments might be tolerable.

Until then, Fuck. You.
