Penny Hawthorn, aka Penny Halperin, last known address of 1153 S. Cuyler Ave, Oak Park, Illinois, daughter of Chicago Tribune reporter Michael Hawthorne and Jennifer D. Halperin of Columbia College, current student at Boston College, pled guilty to spitting on an off-duty police officer exercising his First Amendment Right to peaceably assemble and air his grievances to the government:
- A 20-year-old woman accused of spitting on an off-duty police officer was sentenced to 25 hours of community service.
Penny Hawthorne, of Oak Park, Ill., allegedly shouted "vulgarities" at the officer on May 23 then spit on his left cheek during a public demonstration at Chicago’s city hall, Chicago Police spokesman Officer Patrick McGinnis said.
Fox News obtained exclusive footage of Hawthorne spitting at the officer.
And although she had a lot to say on the date of occurrence, when asked for a comment at Court....:
- When asked if she stands by her decision to spit at the cop or would like to offer an apology, Hawthorne had no comment.
No apology was offered, so we assume she isn't sorry at all. Twenty-five hours community service isn't nearly enough. Someone suggested she spend an hour outside of each police District, HQ and Homan Square picking up trash and having officers spit on her for a while.
The footage at the link is amusing - one single reporter versus one single spitter and she has to have a "bodyguard" and runs away as soon as possible.
By the way, Aldermen Sposato and Napolitano were both present for the Court proceedings. Class acts.

This is wrong. She was given deferred prosecution. Which means the case is going to be dismissed when she completes the community service. She did not plead guilty to anything.

I really could not figure out if this was satire or not. I saw his speech. He fumbled through it and in the end I wondered who wrote it for him. I did not take him seriously and the statement about physically removing people from the expressway I took more as him being unprepared for the question. Come Saturday we will see..either way. It's not the crime of the century, but it is an aggravated battery, which is a felony. People get harsher sentences for lesser crimes. This tells people it's ok to spit in the face of a police officer, because the most you'll get is community service. Since you feel the punishment is sufficient in this case, what would you want to happen to me if I spit in your face?

And, therein lies the problem. It seems you have been conditioned to be accepting when a police officer is the victim, as if a police officer being victimized is part of his/her job and no big deal. On the contrary, it is a big deal. Short of serious physical harm, there is nothing more vile, insulting and disrespectful than spitting in someone's face and, especially, spitting in the face of a law enforcement officer.
Also, these days, spitting in someone's face could be the causation of a possible health challenge. Should the spittle land in the eye or open mouth who knows what could be caused. Who knows what that woman has done with her mouth or where her mouth has been on what and what health problems she has within her spittle and mouth.
Because her act was so vile, disrespectful and insulting, she deserved a much stronger penalty, but I do agree with you. With our politicians, courts and society in general, it is a wonder she received any punishment at all. If she had a jury trial, they probably would have tried to give a million dollars or so to her as a parting and inconvenience gift.
