Shotspotter Fail

Word from the west side:
  • The shooting you referenced at Homan and Walnut in tonight's posting - where up to three offenders used numerous weapons to shoot six people including a 5 year old - cops recovered 15 or 20 shell casings and might have missed a bunch more in the dark. Shotspotter didn't even get a single gunshot detection. Homan and Walnut has been the location of a fixed post for three or four months, the 011th district is covered in wall to wall gunshot detectors that Rahm spent millions on, and the entire system failed. Not that it would have stopped anything but the word I got from the people manning the nerve center is there's still something like a 30% to 50% failure rate on picking up gunshots, especially from cars.
Great use of tax dollars once again Rahm.

Even so Rahm and Special Ed are the biggest problem. The failure of CPD is squarely on their shoulders. For the most part Shotspotter is a good tool. For the most part if nobody is shot the public is so tone deaf they figure it’s not in issue. I can’t tell you how many times the shotspotter picked up where the shooter was and no calls to 911 occurred.

You know it's not the worse investment considering it prompts the need for more higher quality pods. Shot spotter helped me get a gun out of what I would normally have considered a bs domestic call. Been a believer since then haha that said Rahm still sucks

The technology is amazing; our officers will be dispatched to a shotspotter alert and sure enough shell casings are located at that expect location. When it’s used in conjunction with a nearby POD cameras the info is really invaluable.

The info I’ve heard is Shotspotter has something activated that automatically suppresses fireworks, likely due to the large amount around the holiday. The gunfire is automatically grouped in on occasion. Before this, it was easily 90%+ accurate. I know we’re quick to criticize crime fighting efforts from the city, but honestly; this one is actually worth the money.

1) how many shootings have the shot spotter prevented?

2) how many offenders have been apprehended due to the shot spotter?

3) Is the clearance rate for himicides going up due to the shit spotter?

Answers:

1) Undetermined (I highly doubt it)

2) I haven’t heard of any, but there might be a few

3). No

Is it good technology yeah sure but I hear different people coming on zones after shots fired calls ‘no shotspotter hits’ that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a shooting. Like the main post says what if the guy was fired from inside a vehicle. Just like goofs who would say after a shots fired call ‘I’m right here I don’t hear anything’ then a minute later dispatcher would say ‘well we are getting calls for a person shot at that location’

They put this out like a week ago and it’s also been read at all the roll calls in the C/O book. It says that gunshot events may not be captured in most parts of the districts and if they are the possibility of them being mislocated is high. Relax.

Do they make a “bullshit spotter” judge replacement system? Just wondering. If not, why rush to scenes if the courts throw everything out, deny charges and risk POs being injured, stripped/fired and sued? Seems to me it’s a house of cards made out of money that collapses all the time. But yeah, totally worth millions.... and the aforementioned risks... with little to no prosecutorial bite for offenders.

So, brother, I’m not arguing the effectiveness of the devices but their existence is rather pointless if our judicial system is corrupt and refuses to prosecute. Therefore, it is a waste of money, at least currently.

I am retired 3 years now, and I did my last years at callback due to a medical condition that has left me almost immobile now. That being said, I recall when assigned to OEMC at the POD cameras, they started using Shotspotter(or however that is labeled now). They stopped using them then because of all the phony reports coming from the echos of fireworks, truck backfires, etc. My question is, did they ever resolve that specific problem, or did they merely let it sit and try to fire up the same old inefficient mechanism with the hopes it would work? Just curious.

The shotspotter works. Think of all the shootings that did not occur. These are the unspoken truths. These numbers cannot be measured. Lots of hope and change to solve that pesky out of control crime problem committed by certain demographics.

Lots of federal grant money lobbied by former gold star pensioned retired command staff members for those shotspotters. The six figure guys were recruited for their executive truly ineffective crimefighting experience to supplement their measly pensions which one cannot possibly survive on. Lots of secondary employment for the bosses.

If these consultant lobbyist types say it works, then let them grease the skids to solve the violence problem with an infusion of public cash and their very own supplemental personal compensation.

Money talks. Crime pays. In the meantime, give the arrested and re-arrested criminals that bond and set them free giving them just one more chance to commit additional acts of criminal terror. And let them activate the shotspotter heating up the rival warring "G's" with all those non- FOID acquired guns.

Dont forget those hard chargers in those baby cpic rooms get a rise in a euphoric state much like a sexual arousal calling out those shots fired calls putting their cinematic skills to work from deep inside a bunker making that technological difference solving those violent crimes. All all that enthusiasm like an orgasm on the radio. I sure hope those excited inside people are wearing protection when they unsheathe their technological weapons after the shotspotter is stimulated.

The overwhelming number of violent crimes validates the need for more money (resources) to solve the problem. Incarcerating criminals keeps them in a controlled enviroment reduces the overall crimes perpetrated on the law abiding public. Low crime statistics defeat the demand for increased public funding for those new ,innovative, solving once and for all, crime strategies.

Shotspotter is identified as a tool to be used by those shotspotter resource officers who somehow justify their importance identifying the obvious chorus of gunfire. All technologies have limitations. It seems silencers are being used since a dismal 50% of aggravated firearm discharges are currently identified by the breakthrough cutting edge technology, a.k.a. Shotspotter.

All that gunfire as evidence by a double digit number of casings suggests that that shotspotters should be enrolled in Obamacare to get affordable healthcare and receive at no cost one of those non-stop infomercial hearing aids. And Obamacare enrollees are eligible for a subsidized cellular phone at no cost. More goverment resources to solve government created problems.

Where is the outrage by prominent democrats like Ramn Emanuel, Tammy Duckworth and "Little Dicky" Durbin. It seems they have lots of outrage and concern for children of llegal immigrants being separated from their parents. Please show me the similar outrage by those concerned democrats for the three inner city American children almost permanently separated from their American families. Thank God these American citizen children will recover and weren't lined in chalk.

Hey democrats these children were almost separated from their parent(s) with a permanent plot at a cemetery six feet under. I guess American children don't count. Their political exploitation draws attention to the social failures in democrat voting enclaves. These children cant be used in a narrative of blame and shame against the sitting president.

But democrats can make a full slam dunk recovery by signing these children for an irrevocable lifetime benefit of SSI disability to fit in with the overwhlming throngs in disabled unable to work members in their community. This is what democrats do to lock in the vote and motivate the base. Its a winning strategy.

The reality is this: Having worked in an SDSC room, there are things I've concluded. Aside from the 4th being complicated with the fireworks, Shotspotter regularly has errors. When it works, it's pretty spot on. With that said, it prevents nothing and 90 plus percent of the time, the PODs do not exist where needed or are broken and some are just outdated with horrible, unusable footage. Then, add in our judicial system and it makes the whole concept pointless for crime solving. The only use is for officer safety by hopefully giving us a heads up on where Rahm's current and Obama's former constituents are shooting.

If you are or were married and your wife worked you can use her quarters. She would need 40 quarters and most women earned quarters starting at summer jobs, and in the workforce prior to marriage and usually for some time after marriage. Also if you were married for 10 years and got divorced, you can still use her quarters

The above reply is scientifically defined as "assinine snark".

Assinine snark is scienterrifically proven to be found only emminating from the assholes of the assinine snarkly species known commonly as "smart assed dumb assholes".

Assinine snark is never confused with ball bustingly effective sarcasm. At least not by any other than those smart assed dumb assholes.

As for you original query:

1. The scientific identifying of the differences between sonic waves, caused by a variety of means, which sound, to the average human ear, as the report of a firearm discharging, is not effectively relevant. The scientific delineation between similiar sources of these types of sonic events has no useful effect in this current subject of convo.

2. Researching the science, and methods developed therefrom, of accurately determining any individual sound event's source of cause is one way to pass the time and satisfy curiosity. The science of sound, aka, sonics, is quite facinating.

3. The practical element of any sound detection system, this detection and determining the occurence of an actual firearm discharge(s) being the subject of convo, is purely one of, theoretically, being quicker than awaiting notification from the publc reporting(s) of event(s) to 911. That is all the usefulness this currently convo subject has to offer. (I omit the obvious taxes being doled out to the usual sticky fingered hands.)

4. The Internet, being the magical source of all curiosities, awaits the original poster's curious attempts to satisfy said curiosity.

ScienTerrifically Yours,

Professor Peabody
