"Free" Library
- Projects relevant to the forthcoming Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s Jackson Park will cost taxpayers $224 million, according to the Washington Examiner.
This includes $174 million for roadwork in and around Jackson Park and $50 million for renovations to the Garfield Green Line station, two miles from the presidential center. Illinois taxpayers will be on the hook for $199 million of the total cost, with $25 million of the Garfield station renovations funded through a federal grant, according to the Washington Examiner.
Unfortunately, Illinois taxpayers would have no way of knowing this money was flowing to the presidential project from looking at the state’s 1,245-page budget, which makes no mention of the Obama Presidential Center. That spending is hidden, but has been confirmed by political figures such as Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
But wait! There's more!!
- Illinois’ state budget might not be the only source of taxpayer money for the center. Chicago residents may face a property tax add-on, as the General Assembly amended the state’s Museum Act in 2016 to permit such a tax to help finance the center. Alterations to the Museum Act also allowed lawmakers to grant the parkland transfer to the Obama Foundation. That transfer is the subject of a federal lawsuit filed by the nonprofit Protect Our Parks. Protect Our Parks claims the city and the Chicago Park District broke state law through their transfer of the parkland, and also argues using tax money for the center’s construction is compelled political speech and a violation of the First Amendment.
Hidden money for the Obama Presidential Center is a consequence of the state spending plan’s opaqueness. The negotiating process in drafting of the budget took place outside of public view and state senators were given five hours to read the massive document before taking a vote. By the Illinois Policy Institute’s estimate, the spending plan exceeds realistic revenue estimates by as much as $1.5 billion.
Remember, Illinois is over $100 Billion in the hole right now. This will only get worse.

There will be as many candidates running as we have alderthiefs.
It will get worse if and when JB is elected governor. Rauner is the only stop gap left in state government to excessive and unnecessary spending. But, wait, JB has a plan to help us out. He wants to change the State constitution to allow for a progressive income tax which he claims will provide property tax relief. However, he has refused to reveal any proposed tax rates. If anyone thinks that property taxes will go down once income taxes go up, I think you are being naive. Plus the democratic plan that was discussed a few years ago was to tax pensions.

Apparently Quinn has fallen out of favor. His last petition to force term limits for Chicago mayor was thrown out. In addition, like the last time term limits was suggested for referendum, it was blocked (by Madigan). Seems you can only have three referendums per ballot, and Madigan made sure that three other nonsense referendums appeared. And even though it only applied to Chicago, Quinn's petition would set a precedent for elected office statewide. These bastards won't allow that. They want an unlimited license to steal, and they're so deeply entrenched, I don't think there's any way sto stop them, until ALL the money is gone.

Friends of the Park or a similar group needs to file a suit in U.S. District Court. We, as taxpayers, need to say "enough is enough." BGA, and other civic groups, also need to get on board. We can't afford the land grab or to fund this with taxpayer dollars. Need to get a friendly ear at the editorial boards of the newspapers and other media. John Kass, how about looking into this?

Seems like some folks dont get it. Emanuel knows this city will be going bankrupt before 4 years are up. He doesnt want to be here when it happens. Recall when the tribune reported that he had detroits BK attorneys here so he could pick their brains. Emanuel is setting up bondholders in front of pensioners by selling them pension debt and more. Once his friends are lined up as creditors before pensioners, he will start the final countdown of emptying all the coffers to his friends. Then he leaves. Then the next mayor files for BK. Then federal law puts bondholders before pensioners and viola! All the last cash is drained, and BK reconstruction makes bondholders whole and pensioners are left last in line. This is the lesson learned from detroit.
Hope this scenario doesn’t happen, but the story is not entirety factual. Police and fire kept there pensions. Only thing that was affected was their annual COLA was reduced from 2.25% to 1.25%. Other retirees had to pay for their insurance until they were eligible for Medicare and city didn’t provide supplemental Medicare insurance. That’s already been done to us so they can’t takeaway what we don’t have

I was floored and saddened to hear another Officer took their life. When a Police Department has as many Officer Suicides as we do Officer Involved Shootings it a a symptom of a seriously sick system. Was watching a TV news report on the incident and then they showed a statistic. Nationwide police and fire commit suicide at a higher rate than citizens. Police it was 17 per 100,000, fire 18 per 100,000. If the causes are stress, overworked, worried about being sued, working with body camera and not being liked by the public, how can firemen have a higher rate of suicide? I’m serious it’s going to be hard to put a cause on it

The older iPhones have slowed down since the new iPhone X came out. An update didn’t help, but because of the problem Which is related to the battery, Apple will install a new battery for $29 instead of the normal cost of $79. Check it out

Why are local taxpayers on the hook for a Presidential Library? This library should be 100% financed with private funds...not taxpayer funds. The City can “donate” the property but construction should be privately funded. It’s total BS that the State, County, and City have record debt, tens of billions in unfunded pension liabilities, billions in Past Due accounts payable, and yet somehow local politicians keep piling on more and more debt. Unfortunately, our politicians here are financial illiterates.
This is nothing but a monument of arrogance for one of the worst presidents. If I was president I wouldn't want this because its a waste of money and really who goes to a library anymore. . Once again somehow the taxpayers are flipping the bill.
You didn't mention the $40 million for Hyde Park High School.
I wonder if any of those voting on these issues have any vested interest in revitalizing the Jackson Park area. Remember that Jackson Park was “rumored” to be a vital part of the Olympic venue, and many politically connected were buying up all the land back in 2009. The land is virtually worthless as of today, but if they can make the area a draw, and fix the infrastructure... they may have the money maker that was originally envisioned.
The homeless people are chomping at the bit to line up, and sleep in the lobby. No less in a shrine to their favorite president...No one would dare to kick them out and down the street...Right?
