- On his way out of office, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is set to create a task force that would consider whether to make monthly no-strings-attached payments to a group of Chicago families to help them make ends meet.
“Universal basic income” is an idea that has been gaining traction recently among progressives, and North Side Ald. Ameya Pawar introduced a resolution in June calling on Emanuel to launch a program to pay 1,000 families $500 every month.
Now, Pawar, 47th, says he will be part of a panel Emanuel will convene to figure out whether such a program can be implemented in Chicago.
So two assholes, neither of which will be facing the voters again, are going to figure out how to spend $6 million on a social experiment that has failed every single place it has been tried. How about that $6 million goes toward the widows and retirees Rahm screwed with Pewar's help.

Since I have worked my whole life, I don't know if welfare, WIC, and other programs still exist. A family member worked at a food pantry and I contribute to the Chicago Food Depository and the Salvation Army. I clean out my closets annually and drop clothing into donation boxes.

You know what a "universal basic income" is? It's called MINIMUM WAGE, and you get it by WORKING for 40 hours a week at one or more jobs. You don't get it for free.
How many putz' are going to get the $500/month? Say there's a husband and wife - so they get $1000/month then? $12K/yr for doing jack shit? If they worked 2000 hours/yr, that'd work out to $6/hour for a 50 week year. Not even minimum wage!

Who is the dummy here. My wife and I are working hard to provide the best we can for the kids, property taxes go up roughly 700 a month which I cannot deduct from my income taxes. All while some do nothing no drive and no sense of responsibility/accountability gets about the same amount just for breathing, then doesn't have to claim it as income.
These people are creating a huge disincentive to work. Someone with no life skills on all these programs would have to walk into a job paying 80g just to maintain their current expenditure. The way it stands now if they're running a side hustle for cash they're clearing as much if not more than most Americans.
There should be total outrage over this. When does it end? How much free stuff can the Democrat controlled Chicago give away? What’s the incentive to be productive?

Not complaining, but stating a fact. I tried to do things right and maxed deferred. Now because I’m required to take mandatory withdrawals my income went up and Medicare went from like $120 a month to $287 a month and I just received a letter informing me that both my wife and I will be charge $32 a month for Part D although we can’t use it because we are in an Advantage plan. Would have been nice if city offered a supplemental plan along with Aetna and BC Advantage plans but I guess FOP was trying to do the right thing. Now on Medicare, but wife and I are paying over $1200 a month. Not complaining, just didn’t expect it

I'm pretty frugal, but that amount of money might cover living expenses for 4 months and THAT is if I subsist on ramen noodles and home grown veggies and I don't use any electricity or natural gas.

With the universal basic income (UBI) schemes, the idea is to eventually pay just the money, allowing *other* forms of welfare (LINK cards etc) to wither and die. If you know anything about government bureaucracy, you should appreciate that as a worthy goal. The inefficiency and waste in those programs is so staggeringly large, it's worth very high monthly payments to ditch them.
