Property Tax Disaster

  • This one was so easy to see coming we can only say, “Duh,” instead of our usual “Told you so.” Last year, Chicago lawmakers wanted a way to soften the blow of the city’s recent property tax increases, or at least make it look softer. Singling out the city wasn’t workable, so they got Springfield to pass increases in the homeowners and senior exemptions for all of Cook County.

The Chicago Tribune last week detailed the actual results. The broadened exemptions merely shifted the tax burden to to other properties. Many properties were taken off the tax rolls entirely, leaving the remainder to pay the bills. The levy — total taxes raised — didn’t drop. The consequence has been a “perfect storm,” the Tribune says, for many communities already in a property tax catastrophe.

We weren’t the only ones who saw that coming. The Daily Herald and Illinois News Network, among others, wrote about it. We said it was a wonderful illustration of rampant idiocy in the Illinois General Assembly.

The actual effect of the stunt has been particularly pronounced in Chicago’s south suburbs, which are largely working class and African-American.
And the exodus of decent middle class, tax paying families continues.

The increases in homeowners and seniors exemption passsed in Springfield were minimal at best compared to the increases the Cook County Assessors put on Chicagoans wither new property reassessments. They were random and increases were huge with no rhyme or reason evidence to support the increase. Mine was raised 90% with no comparable comparables or recent sales in the neighborhood that would justify huge increase. All they are doing is chasing people out of Chicago and Illinois. I reside on the northwest side of Chicago so I’m sorry if I don’t have much sympathy for the south suburbs. I’m sure they are not seeing a $6000 increase in their property taxes

And speaking of property taxes, also related is Rahm's basic guaranteed monthy income of $500.00 to people for for doing nothing which is now in the planning phase. Think this will bring in votes? Why yes, yes it will. And couple this with the fact that we the tax paying citizens are on the hook for Obama's Presidental Library. Who's paying for all this? Why you of course.

Illinois politicians care not for their constituents. Making 150k year or more with a spouse that's probably sitting on a cush graft job somewhere. Why would they care if property taxes increase 2 or 4k a year? My family is actively seeking a way out of Illinois. Job applications are being sent out and home offers are being made, our house will probably hit the market come spring if not sooner. Good luck to those who stay, you will witness the collapse of the city, county, and or state.

Democrats love to tax. That is their version of wealth distribution. Take away from the producers and give to the non productive. In some convoluted way believe this is fair to all. Why are you still voting democratic or staying in a democratic stronghold. Will be interesting to see who they take from when all the actual taxpayers are gone.

Got back from south Carolina last week picked a nice area, low taxes law respected, then watching the world news now with hurricanes and watching past flooding makes you think where can we go? Florida? look at last year hurricanes! The problem is getting older, and don't want to deal with more and different problems,we have here top hospitals, shopping, transportation hubs, yes we have problems looks like we are staying!

Was at pension board the other day to fill out some paperwork, talked to good friend about moving, she said that so many have moved out of state and now are moving back because they miss friends, family, and the places they know! Remember we are all looking for the best place the trouble free zones, low taxes etc, but as we age it is harder to make relationships, friends. When our kids were in school we had the children's parents to hang with, after children are raised and start their lives we have the friends we have and making new friends who have already set down roots in other areas and trying to become friends with them is not the same! Why not? Because we have history with our neighbors, community, stores etc..

Opinion? Where to go?

My property tax assessment went up forty percent last month.
Already bought property in Missouri. I can afford the almost-double Illinois taxes, but I refuse to accept them.
I'm out. This county (and state, and city) needs to learn how to budget and how to NOT spend money we don't have.
The answer to out of control spending is NOT out of control taxation.

These type of “disaster” is what got PrickWrinkle re-elected again.
The guise of giving to the poor.
Just a good example of her enslaving her own constituency.

What the County wound up doing was forgiving tax debt, eliminating all r.e. tax responsibility and even went so far as to refund monies to select homeowners. The rest of the town didn’t know they were going to pick up that tab.

There are houses on one side of the street paying the taxes for the tax exempt houses on the other side.
There are businesses paying more in those particular fringe suburbs paying more than if they had the same sized property in Chicago.

Bought up some votes then.
Not so sure anymore...could it be that’s why Prickwrinkle is only exploring a mayoral run?
She angered al lot of her suburb base that could wane back into the city.

These type of Democrats have no financial plan or discipline.
Always bearing a gift for the low information voter before elections.
Take and Spend is the attitude, the gubmint got his.

I have friends who live in Rural Will County, 30 and 37 years respectively, paying as seniors $5k or more a year taxes, No Lake Michigan Water, No Sewers, No Road lighting, No Roads, just limestone, one finally got a tar and chip road after 37 years, with one stop sign at the 4 corners and what happened the first week, a farmers semi crashed broadside into a womans SUV with kids on board.
And to those of you leaving Illinois because of real estate taxes, Remember, you will pay income tax on your pension etc in nearly all states, especially those bordering Illinois.

How is this possible?

Law Enforcement enforciing taxation.

Threat of certain seizure of property if taxes not paid in full.

Threat of seizure of assets if certain other heinous taxes are not paid in full.

Threat of cancellation of license(s) required to do business, if taxes not paid.

All possible via the enforcements of laws, laws inherently fair and just when not misused by democrats to grift and graft.

The democrats are like that black mold on an onion. One has it and, eventually, all are rotting into slime. Democrats are the onions. The mold is the greed. Contact with democrat moldy onions by republicans just spreads the mold inducing slime.

And, thus, we have Illinois. Crook county being the epicenter of slime producing moldy onions. Chicago being the slimy, moldy onion's core.

You are confused.

The democrats, they are ALL the same, have a precise financial plan and plenty of discipline.

The plan: Tax the fuck out of any and all who earn and, thus, have.

The discipline: Bribe, using said tax harvestings, the know nuffins to vote to reelect democrats ONLY, and ignore the bloodsheddings, generational degradings, democrat induced entrenched generational base line poverties, ditto violent criminal enterprise proliferations, etc.

As for low information voters, you are also confused.

Democrat voters are not low information voters. They have all the information they desire. They know who pays them for their votes, where the money comes from to pay them for their votes, and like the lives they are living, never earning, always mooching, moaning over their being kept down by the very taxpaying earners whom they mooch off of.

For those democrat voters not on the mooch train, they are the grifters and grafters skimming mucho dinero off the top of the huge pile of your, and my, tax imposed pilferings from our pockets.

Even the useful fools voting democrat, and feeble republicans, because of their masochistic natures are not low information, just retarded.

And many of the above are young, indoctrinated effectively because they are basically retarded, and, having yet to be smacked by the true natures of reality, blythely meander through their young adulthoods, doing the things lingering adolescence induces: eat, drink, be merry, have fun, get laid and worry not about tommorrow, because, hey, they don't think that far ahead.

So, try to let the above penetrate into your beaner, buddy.

They ALL know precisely what they do and why they do it. Even what they do not know, because they want to not think about it.

Like I said, retarded.

No other means possible to collect.

No, not a tax on bank withdraws, banks ain't local business and the federal lawsuits would be numerous on any bank that was dumb enough to participate.

Take away from the producers and give to the non productive. In some convoluted way believe this is fair to all. (Not a smidgeon of give a fuck about fairness, nada. Just Greedy Grafting Thievry.)

Why are you still voting democratic or staying in a democratic stronghold. (You address this to whom?)

Will be interesting to see who they take from when all the actual taxpayers are gone. (Never gonna be ALL gone, as, even though it seems democrats are gonna drain the cow of taxpayers completely dry, democrats are more parasitical, then vampirish, sorta like tapeworms. Though, it does bode ill for the victim taxpayers, democrats need you not to die from their bleedings, just suffer the loss of most of what you have earned.)

Forget and disregard the minor idiots who are the useful fools, and focus your line of sight upon: The grafters and the bribed voters, aka, moochers.

Our President is striving to counter the moochers, via various national economic means, and is unlikely to do the things directly needed on local, state level corruptions; that is up to the citizens of each state, although the national economic effects of his methods can be effective in this.

If President Trump has a democrat grafters proof House and Senate, things will then actually get interesting.

Your definition of interesting is so very typical of the abandon all hope mentality.

Get yourself some MAGA.

For those of us stuck by financial circumstances with homes in economically challenged areas, the decrease put real money back in our pockets. That the North Side and North suburbs of Crook County got their taxes paid from my pocket for years means now they pay a fair share, just like businesses now crying foul. I can't live in Indiana for my current house payment in Illinois (no McMansion here, just 800 sq.ft., no garage), and for years they assumed "home values only go up" and "what tax caps on taxing bodies?). Berrios' own study confirms my point, and it was time something was done to equalize the misery. Illinois now needs to pass a unified property tax law (like Indiana) where ALL aspects of the property tax system are addressed instead of Band-Aid half-ass fixes.

From lack of comments looks like you are all OK with another tax hike. Sheeple wake up they are robbing you blind and your silence says it is fine. Remember the short lived sugar tax, you fought it and got it repelled. You voted with your boycott of city stores to the point the merchants forces Prickwinkle to back down. But this another day and another tax coming your way soon what are you going to do? Suggest strongly that you organize and make some plans to put some pain and suffering on the city council. 224 million or a quarter of a Billion dollars for what? A monument to worst president (yes, small p for obama) the country has ever seen. Suckers so glad I left the city years ago and am living in a very strong Republican city, County and State.

For the record I voted for Trump and believe strongly in the MAGA mantra. I am also an ex Chicago resident that follows Chicago politics closely. While my comments may appear to have given up hope for the Current situation in Chicago I believe them to be a very honest appraisal of your situation. 80+ years of Democratic Machine rule will not change. You have the underclass to become empowered and taken over the city in terms of who gets elected. The gimmes have the votes and all the taxpayers can do is pony up when asked. How long they allow this to continue is anyone guess. But this I do know the city and state are close to bankruptcy and people are leaving both, second city is now third and soon to be fourth city if this trend continues. W C fields said ( there is a sucker born every minute) and the liberal north side voters in Chicago are living proof that he was right. So enjoy the crime, high taxes, bag other sundry taxes while you can. The pyramid is about to implode from within. This is why Rahm is running to high ground.

North side pay more property taxes than you think. I grew up in Lincoln Park area and mother passed away a few years back. My brother and I sold the home and moved out of the area. Since then I offends wondered if I should have kept the house and after I saw your comment I looked U.K. the current taxes. To my surprise last fears taxes were almost $27,000. Glad I didn’t keep it, I could never afford to pay the taxes. My point is the north side is more than paying their share.
