I don't have enough time.
I can’t blame anybody. All I wanted to be from the first time I can remember is a Police Officer. Now with 21 years on all I want to do is retire and move out of state. I so hate this place and the politicians who messed this place up! They fucked up this job and this city! I hate the job now, thanks to them!

I read an article recently about how cities will have to drastically increase the salaries of police officers due to the current environment that police work in. No one wants the job and no one wants to stay on the job. The only thing I can say to that is FUCK YOU, PAY ME!
Who would take this job now? I am third generation CPD with 23 years on, and would tell my nephews, and other relatives if you want a city job, take CFD or Streets and Sanitation. I am gone in six years, out of state out to the Pacific Northwest. If you want to be the Police go to a professional Police Department NOT, THE CPD. This place is high school with hand guns, the popular kids get the good spots, the highly trained people get patrol.
They've turned this job into a walking time bomb, waiting to blow you up. If you aren't that rat everyone hated in school because he snitched all the time or the candy ass that was afraid of his or her own shadow, this ain't the job for you. And hey there snowflakes, this REALLY ain't the job for you. Just think of it, you can make 100k per year if you hustle. All you need is 2 years of college and you can make a nice salary. In the private or government sector, you need at least a masters degree to make that much. Of course, you aren't in as much risk as a cop to being murdered or maimed, but hey, all jobs have a downside, unfortunately this one has let the enemy behind the gates.

10 years ago there were lines at testing events. Even if you passed the written test you were given a number for a lottery draft. The job was in high demand.
Now, relaxed power tests, relaxed background checks, safe spaces for snowflake recruits, and recruits in the academy with empty guns / magazines because they don't want to shoot anyone.

The standards have gone down. Some low quality people will slip through the cracks the city put in place and the citizens will pay for it. Not many coming on really want to be the Police. When I came on this job almost 30 years ago I felt like matt dillon in dodge city. The crack epidemic was exploding and this place was like the wild west. If we only had the technology back then that is available today. Now I feel like barney fife in mayberry. To anyone thinking about taking this job, it will not be what you thought it would be if you make it out here. That being said, the eagle still shits twice a month and you get good benefits and a lot of time off.
I think applicants are holding back until the BO library is built after which all folks will come together and live in peace and harmony.

Spoke with a couple FTOs. I’m retired. They said the recent batch of PPO s are pretty worthless...always texting and not paying attention. Taking silly selfies. No desire to learn the job. I said years ago that the policies and environment the politicians have created will result in a police force that will be significantly compromised. The only people this job will attract are those who have connections to bosses via blood or friendship that are destined for charmed careers and promotions, those who are desperate for work and meet the minimum standards, and those who are qualified predominantly by way of superficial attributes i.e. race and gender for the purposes of satisfying quotas. The consequences are a mixture of overly prudent or hesitant officers, professional scammers and abusers, and overbearing, incompetent and micromanaging supervisors and their sycophants. All of this politically induced tweaking inevitably leads to more of the same problems it was designed to solve; less effective, reactive policing, lawsuits, emboldened criminals, higher crime rates, and increases in officer injuries/fatalities. The majority of these problems have already come to pass and they are becoming even more prevalent with each passing year.

I made it into year 7 with Chicago hated it. But started going back to school. Moved to the burbs job was less stressful but continued with school.

My whole life I wanted to be a cop since a kid. Got on this job. It was fun for first couple years Then ready to retire in one year. Remember people, if you don’t know anyone or have clout , 90% will never work in a unit or be promoted . The only ones who get where or what they want is to be a suck ass , or be part of the royal lineage of Chicago politics which I am neither . Please be the police anywhere but Chicago ! If you do , don’t say I didn’t warn you . Working thirty plus years till 55 age, with a body camera recoding your every move, good luck

In my first few months of retirement, I started to go out to places that I didn’t have time to go to when I worked for the CPD. I visited places that were quiet, clean, staffed by people who generally seemed pleasant. No cursing, loud, dummies who think they were some wise mouth comic. Didn’t look for another job because being as my wife and I are empty nesters. I didn’t need one. Still in the area but moved out of Chicago. There’s a whole new world out there that lives without CPD bullshit. Learn how to save money and invest in stocks and mutual funds. And always cut your losses and don’t be afraid to take a profit.

Don’t know or care about national average. Care about Chicago average which is pretty good. You do realize there are more retirees than active CPD officers. If our age is 55 to get insurance than how are there 14,000 retirees over that age. I’m pretty sure at least one officer is suffering from terminal stupidity

Change the age to 50 again. Those older ones in my class were great Police . While only for 10-15 Years they did well some even less
If the city allowed lateral transfers from other departments/states without having to go through the entire academy and start at the bottom of the pay scale they would get plenty of applicants. Not to mention lifting the residency.

I can't imagine who would want to make a lateral transfer into the department if they had done any research at all and became aware of the incompetency of who is leading and how one gets promoted a great deal of the time (i.e. merit, or cheating). And then there is the status of the pension fund and the fact the department and city never stands behind their officers. Sounds like a great lateral move for sure! If it were possible to lateral in, I would suspect it would not be the cream of the crop applying. Even if they lifted residency, taxes are high in Illinois and there are better places to live today.
I retired at age 50. My daughter is 7 y.o. and pretty much forgot I was the police already. I am not letting her join CPD.
that was in the late 60's when coppers worked to 63 years of age , forced off and averaged less than 18 pensions checks . Top pay then was maybe $8500 a year
milenials , skinny jeans , tight shirts are afraid to do police work
don't let all the sheep dog , blue line patches on uniforms and off duty jackets fool you .

Who in their right mind would leave a good suburban police job to come to the CPD? Especially now? And then to top it off they’re told they have to move out of their nice big house in the quiet burbs and pay a lot more for a tiny house in Chicago. Hell no! The sess pool of Portland Oregon is constantly looking for laterals, but aren’t getting many takers and they don’t even have any restrictions on residency. Cops can live out of state.
it's a great job, good pay and benefits, very secure. You just have to learn to adapt. Good luck to those that want the job for the right reasons.

Don’t do it! The public hates the police and will sue you just because. Plus, no one in this dept stands behind you. You have commanders jumping up and down clapping when JVD got convicted. It’s insane.

It’s so sad what has happened to this city and this department. There is so much negativity to the police but what is more sickening is the constant BS by this CPD administration. There is so much division and we are falling apart from the inside out. The ones that should be fired get better spots. Eddie how it it that a Commander of police holds her boyfriend hostage with her gun, slashed his tires, and stalks him and gets arrested and charged. Instead of her losing her job she gets a gold star in the inspection division. That is ridiculous. Trahanas should be in jail and Harris was hidden there cuz wherever he goes his troops hate him. Add Escamilla to the shitty boss list. He’s a sell out and a suck up so give him another merit promotion.
Commander K Johnson from 007 is glad you left him off that list. In the event you have a problem with him tell him to his face. He'll be at the local Social Security Office if you need to find him.

I'm not a cop but from reading this blog the head assholes Rahm-it and Special Ed have taken a noble profession and desecrated it. With all the BS going on how could you ever do your jobs with your hands tied behind your back? If I worked there I would be so fetal it would be just sperm and egg! Fuck them! Certainly there should be no questions why there cannot be enough recruits and if there is let them read over here for a bit.

The average CPD retirees age is probably 65 or older. The pension stats listed above show over 4,000 retirees about the age of 70
