I have been in the same unit for almost 30 years. About 10 suicides, 2 were pill overdoses and 8 were self inflicted gunshot wounds. Most were a complete surprise and a few you could see it coming. Another 15 or so drank themselves to death. In retrospect, hard numbers to digest. I wish I had the answer, but some people just don't show any signs that they are in distress.

Prayers for this officer and the entire police community. We all have the responsibility to help one another. There is no room for pride. If you need help, ask for it. If you think someone needs help, break the wall. If you are afraid of losing your job, be more afraid of losing your life. Suicide is one hundred percent preventable if we lean on one another. The only time you are alone is after the fact. No one is alone in life. Most especially a police officer, who has a family of brothers and sisters in your corner all the time FOR LIFE.

There are on average 4 to 5 suicides a year in CPD. Regardless of political climate or leadership. Domestic issues, finances are a main reason.

By the way, 90% of people who survived suicide were intoxicated. 100% of them regretted trying immediately. Food for thought...

As a citizen I thank each and everyone of you from the bottom of my heart. The violence and conflict you deal with everyday is hard enough without public condemnation for putting yourself in harms way and trying to make a difference in our city. Many people appreciate your efforts, we just aren’t protesting and blocking traffic yet, but maybe we should.

Before blaming Johnson, Rahm, Dart, the ASA’s office or anyone else we need to take a closer look at ourselves. It is us who deal daily with these officers in need of help. It should be us who see the signs. It should be us taking the time to get to know our fellow co workers and it should be us having the courage to speak up when we suspect an officer is in crisis. 10 years ago I was in crisis. My partner and my supervisor made the difficult decision and forced me to get the help I needed. I became angry and felt betrayed by them feeling they had jeopardized my job. In the end it was their actions which likely saved my life. Looking back I can’t imagine the internal conflict my partner had to overcome to have made the choice he made.

All of us need to keep in mind that officers in crisis are only able to focus on the present and the pain they are suffering and can’t see a path to feeling better. So simply telling officers to get help is not always enough. Reach out and ask your partners and close co-workers about their lives and be persistent if you suspect more then normal stress.

EAP is a great resource Which I still utilize occasionally. Despite the criticism from certain people about EAP keep in mind that the staff has years of insight in dealing with police related issues and if nothing else it’s a good place to start.

Reading this...feeling depressed, need an assist from a, "brother on da'job?"

Copy/paste the below site into your browser to access the Chicago Police Chaplains site for help sites/options for our "Thin Blue Line" brothers and sisters.

https://www.chicagopcm.org/resources.php

A direct phone number for our CPD EAP 24 hour site is...
Employee Assistance Program (EAP…Chicago Police Professional Counseling 24/7…and CONFIDENTIALITY IS GUARANTEED): 312/743-0378

Also there is a free crisis "TEXT" line that will text back and forth with you (24/7) as long as you feel it necessary.
Merely start the text on your phone by placing in the "To:" box 741741 and begin your messages with a trained counselor. That doesn’t just mean suicide: it’s any painful emotion for which you need support. Just text them at 741741.

Finally, from this fellow CPD officer,(now retired) know one thing. "WE love you." That's why all these people and sites want to have your back when you need help. That's what we WE do for one another.
You've assisted our brothers and sisters on the job and this is no different.
Please let us return the professional courtesy and help you when necessary.
Stay safe and God Bless all our fellow first responders.

A little different spin here, this is a retired PO who was suffering quite a bit with a very serious health condition. We still need to reach out to our retirees somehow. We don't see them every day like we do or did at work. I don't believe this was a mental health issue, the act seems to be the means to escape the agony of the health problem they were trying to manage. Modern medicine can't always help make things tolerable. Anyone who deals or has had to manage chronic pain, or severe debilitating health conditions understand. I'm sure this act was pain management as well as a means to avoid the extreme health care costs that will be the responsibility of the family, in addition to wanting to avoid being a burden to the people they love. Their pain has ended, may they rest in peace.

Father God...
We cry mercy unto you
in these times where
those in power rejoice
in their arrogance in
the evil they do and the
grief they've caused to
fall upon your peacemakers.

However flawed, however imperfect,
however judged through the warped
lens of perfect hindsight.

Your peacemakers face things that all
others have liberty to run away from...

You made us "funny" that way Heavenly Father and
for that, we who strive to keep your peace and your
laws and those few friends blessed with your gift of
righteous discernment do praise you even in the face
of tragedy and wearisome grief.

Have mercy on us...
Have mercy on our brethren who for reasons
known only to them, have felt so overcome
that they choose to take the lives that you
have given.

Forgive us our shortcomings and assuage our grief
in not being able to save our troubled brethren.

Fierce and unyielding we are to those who hate
and violently revile the laws of the land which you have
appointed men to obey.

But keep us mindful to be kindly one to another,
especially toward our brethren who are struggling.

Amen.

And for those of you who joyously revel
in the afflictions of The Policeman
and the deliberate stumbling blocks
placed in front of Policing and
any semblance of Public Safety?

3rd Chapter of Romans...

...Just another dumb, uneducated, racist,
brutal, insensitive some-kind-of-phobe
bitter old cop who's resisting "reform."

It does make a difference. He was suffering from a painful cancer and eventually you can’t take it anymore. This had nothing to do with the job, Johnson , working conditions or the mayor. Even if he retired at 63, he has been retired 26 years. Hard to blame this on the job. Just a shame and he’s at peace now. God bless him and take care of him

90 years old, retired so I hear.
Any other place both the Mayor and Superintendent would leave out of shame if not fired for incompetence but this is Chicago and all the Mighty Midget has to say is something like "never let a crisis go to waste" while shedding his crocodile tears. I'd give anything to be a fly on the wall at Judgement Day when he dons his precious little Tutu and tries to dance his way to forgiveness. No song and dance and certainly no wedding dress in the rafters will let him BS his way out of this one.
If, God forbid, I'm around when something happens to those who injure or abuse those who protect us I'd like to think I'd be the first to raise my hand and proudly proclaim, in the interest of justice, "I dinsee nuffin."
I can do no better than to quote Shane McGowan - "May the whores of the city lie awake in their beds, and sweat as they count out the sins in their heads."
I bet not even Sherlock Holmes himself could detect I'm royally pissed off....

If the guy was 89 years old, and was suffering from cancer, and retired since 1992, then I don't feel bad for him. I admire him. He beat the city and got to enjoy his pension. The rest of us should be so lucky.

Big difference between someone suffering from depression at a young or physically healthy age, and someone pushing 90 with a physical illness. No one wants to die, but we can't all live forever. He probably saw his friends or relatives waste away from cancer or something and didn't want to go through the same thing, being reduced to a shell of his former self. Bedridden, brain reduced to mush because of chemo.

Glad more info came out because now I don't feel as bad hearing about it. Prayers to any relatives he might have had that are grieving. I'm going to toast him with a frothy beverage on this snowy night. If he was a good fellow, worth his salt, then he wouldn't want fellow officers that didn't even know him to mourn in sadness.

We will all see him later down the road at some point. Until then, Godspeed sir.

“Go fuck yourself”? A little string there, Jiminy.

Using YOUR logic, YOU are also to blame for this Officer killing himself. If you are the police, you could have easily contacted the FOP, got a list of retired officers and visited him. If he didn’t have enough money for things such as meds, YOU could have bought them for him. If you can’t afford them, YOU could have worked special. Maybe if YOU visited him he wouldn’t have took his own life. In other words, YOU as a fellow Officer could have done

Jiminy, your logic is a dangerous game to play. Think before you post.
