Looking back at recent history, the years 2004-2007, 2009-2011 and 2013-2014 did not break the 500 homicide level. No matter where the year ends up, it'll be the 3rd deadliest since 2004. Only 2016 and 2017 tallied more.
Going back further, prior to the mid-60s, sub 400 was the norm while the city's population was 1 million larger.
