Crime is What Now?
We could have sworn it was down. Down a lot. Rahm's had his paid tools over at 35th Street touting it for a couple years now:
- The CTA is warning riders to be alert during the holidays as the number of CTA passengers targeted by pickpockets has increased. The Clark/Lake train station in Chicago's Loop has the highest reports of pickpocketing.
The thefts are the work of about dozen individuals each with multiple arrests, CTA officials said. In the last year, four so called "career pickpockets" were arrested. One told authorities when he's on CTA he does five "picks" a day. The most targeted object are phones.
So far this year, CTA has more than 2,100 pickpocketing incidents on buses, trains and CTA property. 2018 is on track to be the third worst year for CTA thefts since 2004.
Remember when the Department used to print out the four-page Daily Bulletin with all the pictures of known pickpockets, recent parolees and gypsies? That was to help coppers recognize known thieves. Too bad there's no way to reach tens of thousands of CTA commuters with an electronic version of that...something attached to a facial recognition program that could announce to everyone that "Multiple convicted pickpocket John Doe was seen entering the station five minutes ago. Checks your wallets and belongings and alert CTA employees if this man is spotted."
It could be like "PickPocket Spotter."

I have to mention this.... being the city is a finaicial mess. Between the Chicago public libraries and all the College libraries librarary... the number of libraries this city has to number close to 200. How is it they are planning a 500 million unfunded library on protected park land? And if u can't get to a library aren't most people/taxpayers using their at home computer or cell phone? Ohh and 500 million is their estimate.... because the city is a reliable finacial estimator.
5 picks a day of phones? Where does he sell them? This is easy to fix. Joe and Jane Citizen, don't buy phones on Craigslist, offerup, etc. There's a reason no one steals car stereos anymore: there's no market for the sale of used stereos because automakers put decent stereos in at the factory. The "honest" citizen getting a great deal contributes as much to crime as the criminal.
AMBER ALERT for pickpockets???
- Now THAT would be something really good to send out, but I am sure some ACLU Lawyer would say that is infringing on someone's "right to work" civil liberties.
The BIG question is, "right-to-carry" on the CTA. Someone will think twice before they try to rob you if they think you are packing.
"Gun Free" zones should stop using a Beretta with a slash through it and instead use a big "FREE CRIME Zone" sign. Because that sign would be a LOT more accurate.

Yes, use facial recognition to alert riders but there is no chance that picks faces will be viewable to riders. Just imagine the outcry from libs that say the picks are turning their lives around. In a perfect world the picks would be captured and putdown like the dogs that they are.
Excellent idea, and the technology exists so the idea is feasible. However, once people notice the trend in the identities of the known criminals, the idea will be scrapped... On second thought, that's probably why the paper copies went away!
What are you crazy? Something that might work to actually drive down crime will never fly in Chicago. Besides what whit shirt has the smarts to come up with a correct list and with pictures never happen.

Heads in city must be spinning. Everyday another warning. Don't do this watch out for that good thing the CPD has computers and printers to warn citizens. Maybe now that every possible warning has been issued with many repeated you can get out of cubicle and off the keyboard and hit the streets where you might get lucky and stop some of this. Doubt you will find many criminal plying their trade in your stations. But then you never know.
Why not just put a citywide warning that city is not safe anymore. Just list all the types of crime to be on watch for and be done with it. Post in all hotel rooms and on all bzus and El stops. Then you can go back to your fetal naps.
OT man with 70 kilos of coke gets a 250K bail. Why any bail at all? Take truck, van and freeze his assets. Why put him back on Streets? Speedy trial then send him to Phillipines they know how to deal with drug dealers there. Maybe even a trial then a quick bullet to head. Problem solved.

The best way to put a stop to this kind of behavior is the method used in Saudia Arabia. Cut off their offending hand.

CTA does print out pictures of who is wanted, who was seen thieving, masterbating, pushing, battering, assaulting, rubbing, etc. except they don’t disseminate it freely to CPD unless you are on their email list. Plus they don’t want the general public to know how dangerous CTA is to ride. The pictures are pretty good that come out of their digital system. They should be plastered everywhere.
Way back in time, when they had more involved bus drivers, they would shout out to the passengers, that a pickpocket just got aboard.
The criminal would exit the bus at the next stop. It was a long time ago, now that I think about it, but something to witness!
That's a lot of lost or mislaid property.

I remember being at the aquarium close to Christmas one year. When they were feeding the sharks there was a large group of people there watching. They made an announcement over th PA that there was a known pickpocket there so watch your valuables.

I never liked using the cta, and so glad I use metra to come to the loop to go to work and go home from Cary. much nicer trains, can always get a seat and better riders make for a more pleasant commute.

put uniformed police officers in every station and have teams randomly riding the trains. These days it is rare to see cops in the stations or on the trains and when you do they are not paying attention.
