FOP, Start Educating the Public (UPDATE)

Rahm is pushing to open a Constitutional Convention. Madigroin will support it. JaBba the Pritzker is likely to start pushing as soon as he gets in. And Rahm is already prepping the battlefield.

Can someone from FOP start countering his arguments about the COLA that isn't available to anyone born after 1966? That the Police and Fire Funds are so poorly funded because First Responders can't strike to make the City meet its obligations? That other unions get 80% of their salaries upon retirement with all sorts of "sweeteners"? That teachers still only pay something like 2% instead of the nearly 11% first responders do?

And how about that "gold braid" pension - once that went into place, CPD went from 6 [deputy] chiefs to 18 (corrected), captains came back and the number of commanders citywide almost doubled? The rank-and-file aren't the problem, but the massive financial abuse might be.

UPDATE: This is a start....a tiny tiny start (click for larger version):

Yay. A press release. Now....how many press outlets published it? We'll give you a hint....it's a number LESS than ONE.

We saw Rahm's statements about the COLA and him subtly hinting it involved the police/fire pensions on two TV stations, heard it on the radio twice an hour, and on every single local news link we carry on the right hand side of the blog. Versus a single half-page press release that no one carried.

FOP, we hate to say this, but you've already lost the battlefield to Rahm - make sure you don't lose the fucking pensions.

Suburban officers in tier 1 get 3% cola, compounded, but max out at 75% of salary after 30yrs. Apparently CPD is in a different pension system if you guys don't get 3% colas. Retired guys will obviously fight via court any attempts at reducing the cola.

Flatten the org. chart! Should go back to the days of Supt., First Deputy and four ADSs. How about Captains run each watch as "Watch Commander" (get rid of the bloated DSS position) and Lt.s hit the street to oversee Sgt.s that supervise each sector? Won't ever happen, but it should.

If teachers want to strike that's fine. Whenever you see them, and they can be from anywhere, the parents are always supportive when interviewed, they usually say we will just have to make do with our kids while the strike is on. You have the videos of the students bringing them hot chocolate and donuts. Do you think the citizens would be supportive of any police that went on strike. Of course not, they would screaming about their safety. One thing that the Chicago teachers should be doing is paying more than 2% when everyone else is paying more into pensions.

With all the talk about the pension fund going bust, do yourself a favor and find other ways to invest in your retirement. Open a Roth at your bank. If you are married and your significant other works, have them take advantage to whatever their employer offers in retirement funding. And if the employer matches, then by all means put in as much as you can afford. Same goes for Deferred Comp. Max out as soon as possible. Take advantage of the offer by the credit union and sit down with one of their financial planners. It costs nothing but a little of your time and they can show you ways of planning for your retirement that you may have never considered. Never just rely on your pension.

Let’s not forget all the pensions Not just to the gold braid but also to the people who are on the details like the mayors detail the city clerks detail some of the other aldermanic and Secret details the city treasurers detail they are all getting sergeants pensions some getting commanders pensions so there’s more gold braid right there I know it’s not as much is the exempts but it still takes an unfair amount from the hard-working Street coppers pensions who deserve it. So being a political hack pays big dividends!

If they change pension benefits for persons already retired will they let you back on to accumulate for time to make up for any reductions? If they are going to change the rules then they need to allow for it. Besides I thought the pension issue was resolved with the new laws implemented in 2011? How much lower are they going to lower it? Even if they make a change aren't those retired still grandfathered in?

They view us a greedy little donuts eaters that want to mooch off the public's dime when we retire. Going to take a big effort to change the opinion. The Mayor is already working on it and has the upper hand already. Be prepared for pensions to be slashed, and where to apply for public aid. And unless it ended up on the cutting room floor, graham didn’t correct the falsehood of the 3% compounded cola.
Emanuel kept reiterating the “compounded” cola spin to promote his plan of making us the bad guys in all of this mess.
The public needs to be informed that not everybody gets the cola, the cola is NOT compounded & that we pay into the pension!
When I first walked into the academy 32+ years ago, I filled out all the paperwork stating that the city was taking a percent of my check to deposit into the pension fund but that I’d be compensated with a pension after so many years.
This was not an option!!!
Contributing to the pension fund was mandatory and now we’re being made out to be the bad guys even though we held up our end of the deal!

We need to do at least 4 things to solve the pension problem:

1. Legalize Weed.
2. Chicago Casino.
3. Allow municipalities to file for bankruptcy.
4. Amend the Constitution.

Legalizing weed and getting the Chicago Casino are good ideas and should be done but would not generate near enough money to solve the problem.

Bankruptcy? This is desperately needed, particularly by smaller towns like Harvey, North Chicago, Springfield, Rockford, etc. But it would require the legislature in Springfield to authorize it.

Amend the Constitution? The problem has grown so large that NO AMOUNT of tax increases and NO AMOUNT expense reduction can solve the problem. Further, the problem is neither lack of taxpayer contributions, nor inadequate rate of return on invested capital. The problem is that the BENEFITS PROMISED (Madigan) are simply too large. Math doesn't care what you do for a living or your political affiliation. Math is Math.

JB Toilet immediately came out yesterday against amending the Constitution.

Madigroin? He's been in ofc over 40 years and supported many of these benefit increases. He could have many times pulled on the leash of this thing to get/keep it under control but he is too much of a whore for votes and campaign contributions. Plus, there's an old saying, never rely on the person who got you into a problem to get you out of a problem.

And even if JG and Madigroin don't turn around and come on board, the bond market may force them too. Chicago and Illinois are now one step above junk rating. If one or both gets downgraded to junk, the party is over and they're frozen out of the bond market. Which means we're fucked. Bankruptcy will follow soon thereafter. How do you think the pension funds would fair in a bankruptcy? The word haircut comes to mind.

Police and fire will certainly not like to see their benefits reduced. Neither would I. But at the of the day, you can either have a guaranteed portion of a lesser something, or do nothing and watch the whole thing head towards a guaranteed collapse. Because math is math.

Personally, I don't give a fvck either way. I'm moving out of Illinois and taking my business with me.

“That’s not something I’m promoting in any way,” Pritzker said of the proposal, which, if approved, would face a certain legal challenge. “My commitment is to pay the pensions that are owed to people.”

Fix the pensions? You need to take the politicians out of it. Enforce the law that reads they cannot take a pension holiday with out being personally financially accountable (like the police with punitive damages) and leaving all investment decisions to professional financial companies. No more nephews like Vanecko Chicago's version of Madoff making high risk investments.
Then you have to start holding these trustees accountable. The city appointees and the elected ones should answer to a federal court and prison time like Madoff and Chicago's own Jeff Skilling, the other news media connected thief.
Did anyone hear from the pension board on what happened with the DV realtly theft? DV made millions and the pension funds lost millions.
Did the funds sue to recover or press the US Attorney ? Anybody push for it?.FOP?, City hall?, the Governor?, Madigan?

FOP is the largest, but they should not have to forge ahead alone in the battle. We pay dues to the PBPA, and our brothers and sisters on the Fire side pay theirs as well. This is a fight that requires a United front , one that is battled from all positions and funded in equitable percentages. They need to be aggressive; overly aggressive, and win this. There is no greater fight than the pensions and the medical. Rahm is a lame duck looking to make his mark on the way out. The other politicians, especially the one coming in are weak right now, so we need to strike and strike hard. The Con Con is an expensive proposition.
I don’t think IL will ever be able to justify a full Con-Con so amending is the alternative.

Any Dem police supporters (downstate) will likely balk at the costly C-C because it takes millions to what could be earmarked for education, especially when JBToilets is going to give back a lion share to CPS.

Quinn and Rauner both fully supported First Responder pensions.
If there’s a loophole addendum, I think it will first affect State workers and then perhaps eventually the rest of us.

Taxing all the pensions may be the first indication that pensioners are doomed to pay for Sanctuary IL.

Correct me if I’m wrong, CPS/CTU was/has been given stipulation via Contract to never having to give up that 2% pension contribution.
Modern times calls for MeToo clause and not just Santa Clause gifts to some.
Why is it there’s no 3 year Ingrade Pension formula for all?

The same can be said for President Graham. Both were captured on video in the chamber but not at the microphone. Where was the pension board members who recently stumped for votes? What happened with JVD was a result of him picking DQH as his attorney . Was it his choice or was it because he was coerced into selecting DQH by Dean , GB and KM ? How can u have an attorney who has never tried a murder trial ? It was very obvious that he was way over his head . Let’s look at his many mistakes !
1. He allowed The Judge to remain on the case .
2. He selected two attorneys “ one the judges buddy and the second a real estate attorney as his assistants .
3. He violated the gag order .
4. Did not ask for a home monitor for Jason .
5. Did not attack the witnesses against Jason.
6. Coached his kids baseball team prior to the trial and left town .
7. Turned down a plea bargain .

Hey FOP aholes, you ever hear of billboards? They are everywhere in the city. Outside Ohare would be a good start. It will take money though away from your annual golf and the beer pizza meetings. You assholes better get your shit going on a full court press before its too late.

Hate to say it, but there is no way to tax ourselves out of this mess. What are we going to do? Tax more businesses out of state, tax more people out of their homes? The feds moved to defined contribution retirement 30 years ago, and it should prove as an outline for states and municipalities.

In the mean time, I recommend everyone start a Roth IRA and invest as much as they can into it.

why a Roth? I'd rather have my deferred tax $ working for me.

Why don’t the FOP, or the self proclaimed experts on this blog do an op/ed piece in all the local newspapers? You can straighten out the media and show what a mean, vengeful, lying little prick our not soon enough exmayor is. If you call for a news conference, no one shows. A lot of national news services are always looking for something to use and are forever borrowing items from all over. Maybe just write the Presidents name, that could get more attention?
