Specifically, the cost was $130,106.15, Corporation Counsel Edward Siskel wrote to Smollett.
That last fifteen cents is going to be the deal breaker.

Actually criminal case standard of proof is beyond reasonable doubt. Standard for payment lawsuit is preponderance of evidence. Suing him and prevailing in a civil case by preponderance of evidence IS due process.

Due process works just fine in civil court. You just get less of it. This is how the system works and this is why you have two systems. Ever heard of anyone getting in drouble at public school. They got due process, it just was not to criminal standards. Smolett is only trouble for his false report, like the runaway bride laws for false kidnap rpoering. See gross v. lopez; Matthews v eldridge.

Just think about the resources for a minute.. $130,000 costs just in manpower. A little perspective. Clearly estimating cause I don't know the particulars.
Cop regular salar without OT-$100,000/year
Average Hourly rate (No OT) - $48.07/hr
OVERTIME Rate (OT) x 1.5x - $72.11/hr
Total manpower hours used for the Smollett Case- 1,802 hours. (130,000/72.11)
Assuming all of it was using OR.
For a 3 week investigation, that equates to 15 people 40hrs per week.
Any murder investigations get those resources and that amount of manpower.
This is sick and he gets off with no record. Wheels of injustice.

Although Rahm did have a point, Trump does not need to get involved as Smollet made this a federal case by mailing terrorists threats and fake hazardous substances, and as well violating the civil rights of Trump, his supporters and every non liberal white person in America.
This hoax/stunt could have started massive riots and chaos and death, across America, Smollet deserves life in prison, no less,
