Crain's Sees Arbitration

  • Chicago's new mayor certainly has her hands full these days with preparing her new budget and striving to control gang street violence. But she's going to have to find time to deal with two huge pending labor issues: new contracts with the Chicago Teachers Union and the Fraternal Order of Police that could bust her budget and worsen the city's murder wave.

    Where do those negotiations stand?

After a week of chest pounding and brushback pitches all around, my sense is that a new CTU contract is within reach without a strike this fall—if everyone is reasonable. A police union deal, however, is probably headed toward arbitration, and that's not good news for a city that needs everyone on the same page to fight crime even in a year in which summer seems to have forgotten Chicago.
They see negotiations dragging out into next year before an arbitration deadline is set, so be prepared for a mess of a summer.

Maybe FOP should get ahead of this and demand arbitration. By the time this shit is settled the “new contract” will expire shortly after. Better keep that arbitrator on speed dial! What a fucking joke.

The citizens, businesses, and visitors should be outraged at the way city hall treats their police officers time and time again. So now we’re looking at at least 3-4 years before there’s even a slight chance of getting a fair contract? Why do police officers deserve such treatment? Rumor is Lightfoot hates the police? So she’s labeling an entire group as bad because of a few at best? The police are asked to do everything and be perfect at the same time. What other job works under these conditions? Lightfoot is definitely a terrible salesman for attracting new applicants to become Chicago Police Officers. This also won’t attract people to move to Chicago and keep people here. Lightfoot could crush Chicago.

Chicago Crain's Business is a mouth piece for the ultra wealthy. They hate labor unions. Chicago is not broke. There is actually a book titled that- Chicago Is Not Broke by Tom Tresser. Remember, they have money for Depaul University and their 200 million dollar basketball stadium but not for us workers.

It’s unfortunate that Lightfoot feels the need to treat the police department like garbage for absolutely no reason. Because of a few bad apples a while back she wants to attack all. Police officers are people too. Cops come to work every day and are willing to give everything for the city. Cops can not threaten to strike like the teachers. All they ask is for a fair contract to keep up with the cost of living. Is that asking too much, Lori? The reform has long happened already. There’s nothing else to reform. Give the police a fair contract and lets move on. You’re going to kill the job and drive taxpayers and businesses out with that attitude.

Settling the pay for teachers should be a priority for the City so as not to disrupt thr Summer vacation of teachers. They need a few quiet months off from work as they are entrusted with the difficult task of indoctrination of our youth into the Socialist utopia.

FOP should make a bargain with the City: If Police can prevent all murders for 6 months, than Mayor half-pint would concede to not cutting pay. Attainable incentives like this could prod some of the clairvoyent Officers to better utilize their gift.

Plenty of disappointment for FOP line items can be expected from Team LightLoafer the Reformist.

Teachers already have their bag of tricks laid out in open view...Strike.
(It’s for the kids)
CTU has a 25,000 progressive membership list that gives regularly to Dems.
Did you know that they have a hefty Strike Fund?
No Strike means that budgeted fund (after a contract is settled) it’s monies are doled out to the generous politicians.

The eternally aggrieved community loves to use the No justice no peace slogan to create havoc. Let ours be No contract No work. Let it start with revenue generating activity, traffic tickets should all be cited using state statutes, if any are written at all. No parkers, no anovs. Give this SJW mayor a lesson in politics.

The FOP needs to wake up and demand arbitration. The economy has been in expansion for 10 years. Taxes keep going up the cost of living in Chicago is going up and these goofs can’t negotiate a deal. It isn’t going to get better. Declare an impasse and demand arbitratio

There must be a general playbook for these idiots (in management), who have no, or little regard, or an actual disdain for their employees. Them? Suck up city. Their whole lives!

Stay the course. They F with you, you do the bare, absolute minimum. Nothing.

When you really think about it , if all the labor unions united
not only in shitcaga ,but nationwide , they certainly would be

I can’t remember if there was ever a contract without arbitration! Why do they play these games
, to show your needed? They ALWAYS PLAY THESE COSTLY GAMES FOR YEARS! They should just make one offer and then arbitration. Paying lawyers, paying union members, just arbitrate! I will predict we arbitrate. Then when the decision is made to arbitrate it will take months to put together proposals, after negotiating for years. Really tired of you self important assholes, both union and city, and who looses, US. GUYS AND GIRLS PRESSURE THE UNION TO ARBITRATE, THEY WILL EVENTUALLY.

I believe Crain's follows every major city.
I heard of Crain's Cleveland Business before.
Checked on them today. Said they have been around
for over 40 years.
As for the ultra wealthy part, I don't know about that.
Anyone can read the Wall Street Journal, and you should
be thankful for that. Once you educate yourself, it does
not matter whether you are a plumber or a physician.
Example: Back in the early 1990s, U.S. Treasury bonds
were yielding approx. 8%. The great thing about America
is that both the plumber and physician could buy those
financial products. They both received 8%, and unlike
corporate bonds, were non-callable. The only difference,
of course, was the physician was probably able to buy
more bonds. Your choice: The Wall Street Journal or
the Sports Section. Trust me, it's not rocket science.

What I don’t understand is the “reasoning” behind waiting to file for arbitration. I always hear, “there has to be numerous attempts at negotiation.” So for two years we did nothing? What I hear is the city has canceled or walked out of meetings. Doesn’t that constitute “attempts” at least on the FOPs part? If the city blows us off can’t we file based on that. It sure isn’t the FOP that cancels or walks out. With this logic then we could possibly never have a contract. Shouldn’t there be a better set of rules regarding time frames, seeing that we can’t strike? Just because we have a new mayor shouldn’t mean we start a new time clock.

With the latest property tax increases and Lightgroot's promise to raise them even more, you all may not have any citizens left in Shitcago to pay those raises, benefits and pensions! Oh, and as usual, the predominantly White north side gets hit hard $$$$$ even though 84.7% of CPS students are Black and Hispanic from the west and south sides!

So get your $hit together, and go after $hitcago's money. Buy shares and draft a shareholder proposal a for Boeing to leave town. Endorsed by the FOP. When there is a convention, concert, obummer library, star wars toy museum, political fundraiser, etc. looking to come to town, Maybe the FOP should send a letter to the organizer that the FOP will not endorse off duty officers working as security. When you meet tourists while on the job, tell them its not safe for them to be in $hitcago, warn them of Wilding events on Michigan Ave. Scare the crap out of them with tales of mayhem. Let them take that message back home to their friends and families, about how unsafe $hitcago is, and how you shouldn't go there.

If the city decides to go to arbitration then FOP should then do whatever it takes to lift residency after 10 yrs (keeps home value intact) and demand or sue to make the pensions funded!

What has gone on in negotiations for the past two years that the FOP is not prepared to go to arbitration?

6/23/2019 03:33:00 PM

Demand arbitration, send a letter of intent that the union will be seeking to settle all contracts from this point forward before they expire. If the city will not, then the union will automatically seek arbitration. We need the union to play hard ball, instead of the usual bought and paid for union. If the union guys start getting scared about losing their spots and having to be the police again, without Captain's pay, then maybe they will start doing what has to be done. Lightfoot has declared war, now let's fight the war.

How many years has the FOP been in negotiations with the Shcity? It seems obvious that after years of negotiating, both sides are at an impasse, it's time to go to arbitration.

6/23/2019 07:52:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You cant just start negotiations and say you want arbitration. You meet numerous times and hammer out all the mundane things then try and solve the major differences. After more meetings during which things dont get solved you declare an impasse and file for arbitration. You try and keep things non adversarial in order to stay professional so that when it goes to an arbitrator he wont have ammo to rule against you. It's a long and monotonous process and keep in mind our last contract stays in place until a new one is ratified. Which in this climate isnt a bad thing.

I recall Graham coming to a roll call when he was running saying words to the effect, vote for me and this time things will be different the problem with past FOP leadership was that they had coppers negotiating the contract against highly specialized competent Labor attorneys and I will retain a top Labor negotiation law firm from the east coast to represent our side.
What happened to that??

First, I don’t trust any of them. Second, how do we know the FOP doesn’t have one? But If the city blows us off over and over then it wouldn’t matter anyway. I can tell you Graham is driving Lightfoot nuts and not giving in to her outrageous ideas. That’s a good thing and arbitration is inevitable. Thank god we don’t have Dean Angelo. He’d be selling us out to her.

Once the fortune 500’s and mid major companies decide to jump ship and move their corporate headquarters elsewhere the city will begin to fail financially. First sectors to be hit hard will be real estate mainly the newer condos being built in river north and south loop. These being mainly occupied by young movers and shakers who will leave and no demand left to occupy them. The job market will subsequently follow driving prospective job seekers out crushing the rental sector of housing. Tax revenues will plummet and property tax will soar driving out your core citizens. In the end the city will fall like a stack of dominos. Funny cause the police actually see the city from the inside and this is easy to predict. Good luck pissing off the police lighthead, not the smartest move. The side effects of losing the trust of your cities warriors can end in a mutiny. I’m no expert but a simple observer, Chicago is in a turning point of negative change ahead. The tall building are an illusion of prosperity.
