Great Job Kid

  • Timothy Sweeney and his wife had just stopped to pick up a blueberry pie for his grandma when he saw a man lying nearby in the middle of the street.

It was only when Sweeney reached the man on that West Town street June 30 that he realized how grave the situation was: An artery had been cut, and a shinbone poked through the skin.

The 28-year-old police recruit had just recently learned how to apply a tourniquet, he explained to reporters Friday at the Chicago Police Academy. But he was off duty at the time and didn’t have the kit with him, he said.

“One gentleman gave me his belt,” Sweeney explained. “I applied the belt and got it as tight as I could.”
He did have some previous paramedic training, so he was a little more prepared than the many recruits (and many veteran cops), but still, calm and collected under the pressure of someone bleeding out in seconds is something most of us don't see every day.

An excellent job by the soon-to-be Police Officer

Kudos to the soon-to-be Officer Sweeney for a job well done!

It’s been many years since the First Aid training I had as a Scout. As a CCL-holder, I thought it time to brush-up on the important stuff. So just last weekend I completed the four-hour TECC Training class presented at a local gun range. It’s the civilian version of the Tactical Combat Casualty Care training all military personnel now receive. More on it can be found here: http://www.c-tecc.org/.

It's essentially front-line trauma care for hot/warm zones and focused on addressing "PMARCH" issues:

• Patient/Provider Safety
• Massive Hemorrhaging
• Airway
• Respiration
• Circulation
• Hypothermia

The training is intended to equip you to save yourself or others at risk of death from (a) bleeding out; (b) tension pneumothorax -- i.e., air entering the chest cavity and collapsing the lungs; and (c) airway problems. The training is focused on stopping massive hemorrhaging within the four-minute window that begins at onset of injury, and re-establishing respiration within the eight-minute window. Among many other topics, it covers:

• Patient positioning so you, the care provider, can maintain awareness/sight of/defense against continuing threats – whether it’s at the scene of a MVA or active shooter.
• Proper placement of tourniquets.
• Proper wound-packing techniques (it's different than you think).
• Raking and sweeping techniques to locate wounds on front, sides, and back.
• Proper application and maintenance (i.e. "burping") of a chest seal.
• What equipment to include in your different First Aid kits for car/home/workplace/range bag/travel, and different carry methods. (One of the recommendations was to keep your car/home/workplace kits in fanny packs. In the event of an emergency, you can clip it on, have it with you as you move through the scene, and keep your hands free whether for administering care, moving a patient, returning fire against a threat, etc.

The cost was $125 and well worth it.

Stay safe everyone. And thanks to all you LEOs (& your families) for everything you do.

Can graduations great job finally some positive media coverage but then we have this in another state I know why coppers even patronize this piece of shit coffee shop that proved time and time again they do not like the police is beyond reason;

Starbucks shop boots police officers because customer ‘did not feel safe’ around them: reports

https://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/starbucks-shop-boots-police-officers-because-customer-did-not-feel-safe-reports

*Some police officers in Tempe, Ariz., say they were asked to leave a Starbucks coffee shop on the Fourth of July because a customer complained they “did not feel safe” with the cops present, according to reports.

Five officers were drinking coffee at the Starbucks location prior to their shift beginning when a barista asked them to move out of the complaining customer’s line of sight or else leave, the Tempe Officers Association wrote in a series of Twitter messages.

Rob Ferraro, president of the police union, told FOX 10 of Phoenix that such treatment of police officers seems to be happening more often these days.

Part-time paramedic-firefighter with CFD---really? We have part time firefighters?
Just learned to apply a tourniquet in the dark-because thats how our academy wants them trained---the police academy? Really?

Job well done-stopping was the right thing to do.

But am shaking my head over a paramedic who never learned tourniquets until he enter the police academy.

Excellent job soon-to-be Chicago Police Officer, Timothy Sweeney. Your quick thinking saved this man's life. And hopefully, his leg.

ps: Apparently the training at the Academy isn't as bad -- or non-existent -- as some would like you to believe. Like the perpetually aggrieved people (and folk) in 'the community', and the morons in the Obama Dept of Just-Us, Uncivil Rights Division.

pps: To S-T reporter Stefano Esposito -- Now you have to do a follow-up article on the blueberry pie. You can't leave readers hanging in suspense after the way you teased us with the numerous mentions of the pie.

Great job by what seems to be a really decent young man. I’m honestly surprised though the media reported on it because he isn’t a member of the permanent victim class. And why doesn’t every cop have that kit? We have money for progressive shitbags but not for the police. Fucking sickening. Free lunch, free money to clean up lots. No money for cops. Only for gang bangers by a failed mayor who has made it perfectly clear white people are not considered important at all.

Not to take anything out of the great job this young man did, but we're being attacked on every front. SCC you should put up a thread that calls for a national if not international boycott of Starbucks by all law enforcement officers and or service men and ladies. We don't need an organization that spouses inclusivity but at a the complaint of a whimp, they throw us out, and treat veterans and LEO's as non-paying customers, the officers should sue for violation of civil rights. Fuck Starbucks, they can keep their shit coffee. We need to stick together on this one, a statement needs to be made, otherwise we may as well bend the knee. Fuck Starbucks. F/S.

What happened in Tempe AZ Starbucks should be a clear indication to PO’s across the US that they are not appreciated. I can’t believe that an employee asks police officers to leave instead of advising the libtard leftist that they have the right to be there. How do you ever have the balls to call the police after that if you need them. What a horrible judgement. The patron that felt uncomfortable with the police there should have left himself. It will be cold day in hell before I go to Starbucks again. What a disgraceful shame.

Want to stick it to Starbucks?

Do something better than a boycott. Go into a neighborhood Starbucks and buy a number of gift cards with $5 each on them. Preferably with cash. And distribute them to the local unfortunates. The stinkier the better.

Let them enjoy a good cup of coffee. Let the baristas enjoy their aroma.

Terrible thing to do to the officers and they should boycott the place. That being said, it should be done on an individual store basis. I don’t go to Starbucks but there might be some owners who support the police
