Remember, Chicago is Broke

  • Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s plan to go easier on scofflaws and stop suspending driver’s licenses for non-moving violations will cost cash-strapped Chicago $15 million in annual revenue, aldermen were told Monday.

Over time, top mayoral aides hope losses tied to the plan advanced by the City Council’s Finance Committee will disappear and the plan will become “revenue-neutral” as more and more motorists sign up for payment plans they can afford.

But at least initially, a city that is already struggling to close an $838 million shortfall will cost itself $15 million in annual revenue.
Groot really ought to fire whoever is in charge of her messaging - because it sucks. Inconsistent. Contradictory. And plain old incompetency rules the day.

If society can’t get its citizens to abide by laws enacted by the representatives of the people, then by all means change the laws, so that the citizens most prone to violate the laws are not held accountable. Such a noble act of charity by the progressive pols will cost the City approximately $15 million, but do not fret, for property owners and businesses will be tapped to make up the loses. It’s the Chicago Way.

Chicago parking tickets are bullshit. These revenue people write about 100 tickets a day each. 100 x how many meter maids =
Many of their tickets are questionable. They write a lot to keep their bosses happy.

A traffic fine should be no larger than necessary to deter future violations. Traffic fines should not be a revenue source. Traffic fines are fundamentally unfair because they more severely punish the poor. I don’t know the fine for running a stop sign in Chicago, but In California it’s over $500. That’s a weeks take home for a min wage worker. You force a guy into choosing between buying milk or paying the fine. Me, I’d buy the milk and so would every member of CPD.

Fines should be large enough to be an inconvenience, not so large they break the bank.

There is no penalty for driving while suspended or revoked. None.

Under the restorative justice agenda, prosecutors will not prosecute them or collect civil fines.

How long do you think it will take for word to get onto the street?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Isn't this the bullshit excuse that always get trotted out?

Black and browns just fuck up more than white people, eh?

"Lightfoot has defended that go-slow approach by arguing that vehicle tickets account for $260 million in annual revenue and that a habit like that can’t be broken overnight."

Yes it can be broken overnight, Frogeyes. Tell yo peoples to pay attention and quit breaking the law!

and, why do you want this? It would negate all labor contracts to include teachers. Pretty dumb idea and can't be done without the approval of the Illinois Legislature. Release all TIFF funds, pay city employees only what is the wage in the private sector. Union tradesmen working for the city are paid way more then the private sector.

LL is late to that party. Kim Foxx has had a policy for years refusing to prosecute suspended license cases where the license is suspended for nonpayment of fines (or suspended for reckless driving or too many moving violations for that matter.)

How much money has the city/county lost because of Foxx's misguided policy?

Like many Chicagoans, I got the letter from my mortgager letting me know property tax increases is going to leave the escrow for my mortgage (insurance & taxes) short and that after coming up with nearly $3000, my monthly mortgage payment will increase by $147.00. So I was wondering, how badly would city finances be had the City contributed their share to the pension funds over the 20 plus years they skipped, and also how much the pension funds would be funded if that fucking Vanecko didn't raid it for his real estate investment debacle, you remember the one the Mayor didn't know anything about until a SunTimes reporter asked him about it. Like many of you we're stuck in Chicago and drowning in the political incompetence of our democratic leaders. They must think we've all been stealing like they have.

Just what we needed, another non-MBA finance expert in city hall. Did anyone bother ever check her credit score or checking account balance before the nomination ? Shows just how many ignorant identity favoring idiots there are out there that voted for obnoxious pug Larri ToadStump over prove fiscal reformer like Paul Vallas.
What was the Council promised to give BlightLoafer rubber stamp approvals?

We broke. Sanctuary First.
Debt Forgiveness is going to cost us. Share the wealth y’all.
It’s not that Chicago can’t pay their bills, it’s a fact that they don’t want to pay their bills.
Yet corrupt banks keep extending credit.

Don’t forget;
include that $16 million water purifier program to address lead in the community water deal that was pushed through last month when Chemistry, Science and Nature Professor Larri LightLoafer declared a moratorium on installing water meters.
Yes, if you axe’ you will receive a no-cost water jug pitcher and a years worth of charcoal filters to cleanse your tap water from a well sourced city supplier. The same item that can be bought from WalMart or Amazon for $20.
Someone do the math and see how many can be purchased for $16 mil, including shipping and JB Pignuts Sanctuary Internets Sales Tax.

I’m sure this program is also zip code specific, so requests may be filtered or monitored as well.
Water is a basic essential need. Only folks with single family homes are required to pay for it.
GrootFoot Water gives me wings.

The Plan To Save the Planet has no limits.
I think this water meter GreenDeal is another farce, once billed as the best lake water in the nation/world city folk here are now going to pay the price. Rahm doubled the bills, Shortshanks wanted to sell the distribution plant so schemed with others to install meters to better sweeten the deal by measuring volumes.
I guess these water meter savings had an impact on that revenue collection too. Like green electric cars done for gasoline tax revenue.

Fast forward and now GrootFoot is giving free water passes to the community for leaded pipes Rahm’s tax levies we’re suppose to be fixing by replacing miles of main trunk lines.

Debt forgiveness and Grootie is even trying to solicit a bailout from none other than TaxCheat JB on the backs of the rest of the States taxpayers backs.
Spend, spend, spend before they confiscate the books.
Has GrootFoot created a clandestine (expensive) legal panel to study the feasibility of bankruptcy yet?

Oh and another $200,000 to lower the ceiling height in her City Hall lair from 10 ft. to 5-1/2 ft.

Everyone's public sector pension in Illinois is going to take a hit. They are going to try to amend the Illinois Constitution, or approve municipal bankruptcy like Detroit in hopes of pensioners settling for pennies on the dollar, higher taxes on pensions, or both.
Which is no issue for Pritzker and Lightfoot, as they are uber rich and don't give a damn about working people. Only the voting poor.

Wait so it the mayor on up and down that swamp dirty democratic chain allow people/folks to break the laws then why enforce any laws because there is no law only a struggle to survive!

"West Side Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) agreed that drivers’ license suspensions should remain in the city’s arsenal.

“I just think that the fact that you totally take that off the table – for those who are law-abiding – it’s unfair to them,” Ervin said.

“I understand the goal that the mayor has….But at some point, it may be necessary.” "

The law abiding are the ones who have to make up the tab on this $15 million revenue discharge. If the law/ordinance is not constitutional, then take it to court to strike it. If is it allowed - enforce it and get the money. That is both justice and collection of needed city income.

SJWs (like Lori) bitch about social ills but don't understand the money flow matters on the government and individual side that worsen social ills as time advances. You cannot excuse collection on what is owed and then carp about budget shortfalls which might impact residents in a bad fashion when the city has to then squeeze blood from a stone.

DECENT ANSWER

“If somebody had a ticket and they get another ticket, they can just add that to the payment plan [again and again]...At some point, there’s a little tough love [needed]. We’ve got to stop,” said Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson ( 11th).

Thompson stood his ground, even after a top mayoral aide argued that the city has “an obligation to educate people on how to get out of that cycle of debt.”

It’s not a cycle of debt. It’s a chronic violation of the law. The only reason their debt is increasing is ‘cause they continue to get tickets and we’re not doing anything to stop them. We’re enabling them,” Thompson said.

“I understand there’s a hardship of some folks in paying for it. But residents of my community have a hardship of paying an increased property tax and increased fees and fines. They abide by the law and they pay their debts….We have to look at those that are ...paying their debts and not burden them with this additional cost.”

LORI - LISTEN AND LEARN YOU DUMBASS!

"Remember, Chicago is Broke "

Open your real estate tax bill... Who could forget how broke and money hungry Chicago is!? Not a homeowner, that is certain.

Seems the city has selective recall on the money woes when it comes to enforcing lawful fines and penalties against da community. Does Chicago itself need a reminder that it is broke?

Chicago would rather be woke then broke it seems...

to the poster that said union city workers make more than private sector.........untrue. they make the same wages ( prevailing rate ) that outside union workers make. the unions set the rates with the contracts and the city matches it. if you mean they make more than the polish and mexican " tradesmen " you pick up in home depot parking lot then your right. we heavily trained, regulated and licensed union workers, like police officers, use collective bargaining to get our fair share and protect our interests. sort of like certified law enforcement officers vs monterrey security. what the city does do though is pay the highest applicle rate for the work where a different rate would suffice. we have diff rates and contracts according to what type of work, where its at, and what skills are required. city pays top scale to everyone. only a couple bucks an hour diff. if that matters. we are also insured. viteck and jose are not. crane operators for instance need city lic,s for hundreds a year, a new county lic for 150.00 a year, a new private ins policy for 1.5 million made payable to cook county, and a very difficult (6 months of training and tests every 5 years) national lic. many other trades are the same. city workers live here too and have all the same bills, taxes and tuitions that the sworn deal with. we also deserve the best contract our union can wrangle. city workers are also signed to no strike agreements and often wait a year for backpay when the city gets around to catching up. btw way the plumber i use at my house charges 150.00 an hour. hope this clears this up.
