For God's Sake, Slow Down

A few posts down, we apologized (again) to 011 for jinxing them over homicide numbers.

This however, is inexcusable:
  • Two Chicago police officers and two paramedics were hurt when a police cruiser slammed into an ambulance Saturday night as authorities were responding to a shooting that left three teenagers wounded at a party in Homan Square.
By order and training, you are supposed to clear intersections before going through them - even with a green light, because some other emergency vehicle might be approaching. Like an ambulance heading to your shooting:

(photo via sun times)

So now the shooting scene is short an ambulance AND four more ambulances have to be pulled from everywhere else for two injured cops and two paramedics, not to mention the District is now stretched to the breaking point covering a shooting and accident scene.

This is dumb. And what's even dumber is we're told that 011 leads the city in preventable crashes that result in totaled squad cars - eighteen already this year. Now you're upgrading to ambulances? Have you guys and girls not seen exactly what is happening to cops at IAD, COPA, the Police Board, in Court? Thank god there wasn't a patient in the ambulance.

Slow the Hell down. Groot will have you walking....and winter is coming. And get well soon.

zero sympathy. at this point, it is completely on you if bad things happen while you're being a fucking idiot. everyone has been told better. enjoy unemployment to the driver of that squad, especially when the deceased from the shooting files the lawsuit for a lack of prompt response due to an officer not following directives

Exactly the reason I prefer not to work with hard chargers. Not only will they get themselves injured or killed but also me and innocent civilians or bystanders. Responding to a “community member” just shot call. No thanks.

I would like to offer advice to the Officers but history has taught me that you cant give advice to pretty much anyone that works in 011 or 025.They know everything already so just make sure you stay out of their paths because they will not slow down.Years ago they stopped sending new cars to 025 because of all the cars that they totaled.

In all fairness, we have our orders I agree, but the ambulance can look for lights and sirens as well. Another blatant issue with 011, especially first watch is the increasingly high number of officers fresh off their status and lack of leadership. I realize we’re police and can argue this 6 ways to Sunday but nothing I’ve said is illegitimate. I know personally I’m cautious as it gets, I don’t quite understand blindly flying through intersections but I understand how it happens. Any word on who had green?

These two officers should be disciplined hard , this is completely inexcusable . 011 is filled with idiots flying lights a sirens to stupid shit . As mentioned, leads the city in crashes . I hope the ambo crew sues the shit out of the department and the officers personally . Flying the wrong way down the street and completely blowing the solid red , all that for a basic shots fired.

I’ll never comprehend these asshole coppers that just have to drive at least twice the posted speed limit all shift long. And then even faster responding to foot chases for dope or other nonsensical bullshit. Or rolling through red lights when NOT even responding to a job. I’ll bet 99% of the kids on the job today never heard the term “patrol speeds”.

These clowns regularly put a lot of people at risk responding to ghetto shit. Who cares if some ghetto rat is shot or killed? Absolutely NO reason to be doing anything over the limit for savages that reportedly stood around and laughed at the crash site, hoping the coppers were injured.

Unless it’s a 10–1, urgent assist, or directly involves your family, friends or loved ones, there’s no need to put your foot into it. The sooner you get this through your goddamn thick skulls, the better. I don’t want to walk with a limp, be confined to a wheelchair... or dead because you took an intersection at 60 miles an hour and T-boned me responding to what was a “man with a gun“ call fabricated by some Baby Mama who’s pissed that Baby DaddyDidn’t kick her 30 bucks to get her nails did.

Going through intersections without even a tap on the brakes. Until some real discipline is given on some of these crashes nothing will ever change. Tear up a $60000 suv, take a reprimand. What the fuck is that going to do??? Start giving them 5-10 days off at a crack maybe they will change. And then after they tear up a car God forbids you try and give them a pool car or older car, they go and cry to the WC every single time.

Red lights mean STOP.

CFD in my opinion always have the right of way and first dibs to intercede ghetto escapades.
But their speed should also be that of a hyperactive lagoon turtle...for the kids.
I think 011 and many others should also have lawnmower speed vehicles or speed limiters, governors, etc. or never give a 3 year wonder a vehicle with less than 150,000 miles on it. Never get caught up in a situation where you would expect rapid help too.

The old tunnel vision, like the rounding of a blind corner and getting waylaid in 010 last week.
Great to be young, been there-done that...but that was summer of ‘85.

We can all appreciate the tenacity to help canvass androunding up a few cooperative witnesses for the Area while the scene was still fresh. The state’s attorney sure does.

Somewhere I read the City bought 200 more SUV’s...199 should be available for others.

Heck, 3400 Flournoy (emphasis on flour) could have been a desk assignment. Either party could have walked to either location...for a report.
So who got stuck with the paper?

At the point the ambulance was entering the intersection, the cop car was a long way away if it was traveling at lightning speed, and could have been easily missed, which it sounds like it was. Ambulance is moving slowly as it completes the turn, and the cop car covers a lot of ground during that time. All because a couple teenage hood rats were shot at a party at 10 PM, when they should have been at home, asleep.

When I was teaching my son to drive, I told him there was only one rule out on the road. Assume that every other driver out there is a dumb ass, and will do some stupid shit. If you assume that about everybody you see, you can avoid most of the accidents.

So, which emergency vehicle has the right of way?
Does an ambulance have the right of way over a police car?

——————-

It doesn’t matter who has priority. CPD general order states that responding units are to proceed “safely” to the scene. That purposeful use of such a vague word pretty much puts all of the responsibility on the police officer.

No it couldn’t be. It’s the driver. He has control of the car and is responsible, plain and simple. NO one including your partner can tell you how fast or how to drive period. Only you know your driving capabilities and if an accident occurs you will be taking the time, not the passenger

Lack of leadership? Was their Sgt or Lt driving the squad the wrong way on a one way street. As far as the ambulance looking for sirens and lights they might have been but it’s hard to see and hear lights and sirens when yours are going. The last place they would be looking is down a one way street looking for a car going the wrong way

First off......there are TOO many po-leece in these shoot-em-up communities, in TOO small an area, and while it is
wonderful that you care enough to attempt to race to save someone's life, when you have squads and unmarked and ambulances
all going to that same call, you need to S T O P at the intersections.......cuz, my brothers and sisters, if you don't get there,
you can't help!
And secondly, we have currently an administration that will not take into account your intent to Serve and Protect.......
They will however throw you under the bus for your actions. So S T O P at the intersections......the life you save may be your own!

Maybe in 91/92, in 004, there was a muscle bound 6'5" roidrage young'un who I would have as a wagon partner on occasion. There could be a BS call at 133rd and Avenue O and he would take off like a bat out of hell towards that call from where we were on South Chicago Ave @ 75th St.
A disregard would be given when we were 3/4's of the way there and then a call would come out at 79th and Yates and it would be off to the races again. This would continue throughout the tour. Nothing I said could stop the insanity.
Got stuck with him again and he figures it's his turn to drive. Hangs the keys on his pen in his vest pocket and as quick as a cobra I snatched them off and let him know that seniority rules. He turned beet red, started trembling with rage, insisted that it was his right/turn to drive but, UH, UH, not if I'm in the same vehicle as you. We never worked together again after the Captain split us up for that night.
Could I have handled it more tactfully? Yes. Did he put my life on the line every time he drove? Hell yes.
Sometimes ya gotta take the bull by the horns.

To all you idiots posting on Facebook that you want to buy the orders for the Sgt test and to the guys advertising that they are selling the orders for the Sgt test. Get ready to take time and a cr#. The orders clearly say that they are copyrighted information by the city and are not to be sold or distributed. Study groups like Bernstein and others get written approval from the city to print and distribute the orders. COPA and IAD are currently posing as officers selling and buying orders to jam cops up.

They've never been worried about this.

The department would much rather you buy them than print them at work, if you can even find a working printer.

When a policeman gets hurt or killed there's no outcry from the fake priests, ministers, and politicians. But when a gang banger or honor roll student gets killed all hell breaks loose!

No it couldn’t be. It’s the driver. He has control of the car and is responsible, plain and simple. NO one including your partner can tell you how fast or how to drive period. Only you know your driving capabilities and if an accident occurs you will be taking the time, not the passenger
Quit trying to blame someone else for pairing partners

FALSE....... I’ve personally seen a passenger take time for continuing a pursuit after a termination was given....

Never happened. Only the driver gets called down. Only way a passenger would get jammed up if he admitted he encouraged the driver

Listen,I am done in Nov after 30, but after 15 on the bus, believe me when I say I only stepped on the gas for police\fire members and their families.having said that,I never blew a intersection, and was well aware of cpd coming in.I have lived it,and there is no excuse on the cfd side.and furthermore, getting there first, only opens you up to discipline, depositions, blah, blah.reverse is the best gear if you want a pension.

If you’re assigned to work a car with a known cowboy, ask to get off the car for safety reasons

Well you'd have to consult the 011th Dist. 'known cowboy" database and I think that has been destroyed since having been ruled unconstitutional or discriminatory against cowgirls or some such nonsense.

"known cowboy" - wow
