Get Behind the Vest

Late notice, but there's one more day left this week to get sized for a vest in the 022 District.
  • Friday: 8am - 12pm
We're told interest has been spotty - it's a free vest people (upgrades will cost a little bit). You're supposed to replace it every five years or so.

Stay tuned for a location up north shortly after the new year.

Upgrades range from about 125 to a little over 400. Not bad for a better quality worth over 1200. You can always go cheap with a heavier free one. In today’s society it’s worth it.

A great program no doubt. Is there a recycling g program for old vests? I have 4 most are in great shape but expired. Where can we bring old vests so they don’t end up in the hands of some street thugs. FOP has no clue when I inquired a couple years ago
Be safe

If it was taken care of(out of the sun, not in a hot car) and made of some type of Kevlar it will work, but the industry standard is to replace every 5 years.

I had heard of a group that sent vests overseas to add protection to the interior of military vehicles.I'll be damned if I can recall now.Maybe an internet search or someone here knows. My son in law(Lt US Army) is being deployed soon and says the striker he and his troops drive in aint worth shit against any rounds.

Kind of like how irresponsible we are when it comes to voting. Everyone’s all talk but always expects someone else to put in the heavy lifting.

I got one a few years ago, there were way too many options. I got an upgrade and paid like 500 total. Apparently, I didnt get the one that was flexible and light. I was told they break in. Never fit right either. Guys measuring had no idea what they were doing. Left a great opening for my CPD tramp stamp. Multiple phone calls and a run-a-round with no results. I wore it for a year. It never broke in. I gave up and I've been wearing my over 20yr old vest ever since. Appreciate the thought, but the program and the vest weren't great. I'll be getting one on my own.

These vests are obsolete! Please stop wearing them. The wave of the future is cheap
rifles capable of firing high velocity projectiles. These rounds can easily penetrate any vest made of fibers. One can now purchase a short barrel rifle for less than the cost of a glock handgun and many have 30 round magazine potential. This department must make the transition from vests constructed of fiber to steel, ceramic, or synthetic plates tested effective against high velocity rounds.

Take your old vest down to Robbins, Dixmoor or Phoenix PD. They would make better use of it than lying under your bed. The officers in these towns make about 10 bucks an hour

I had an old vest that I got when I came on in '86. Let my kid use it a couple times when he did some ride alongs in the suburbs. He left it in his car trunk, which flooded. Thing was all mildewed and moldy. I washed it about 5 times and dried it in the dryer to see what happens. Now, this thing was about 25 years old. I took it out in the garage and put it on top of a bucket of dirt. .45 round, from 5 feet away, stopped about 2/3 way through. .357mag round stopped with about 5 strands of Kevlar keeping it from punching through. Both JHP bullets.

Im assigned to 610 and my rear vest panel is in shambles. My Lt. JP has stabbed me in back so many times the rear panel is in threads. My next vest will have the strike plate in the
rear.

You are right about the protection the new type vests provide. The problem is selling them to the troops. They weigh a lot. Not saying it right and I’m sure people will say “how much is your life worth?” Which is correct but when the vests first came out plenty of officers complained about the weight, comfort and they were too hot in the summer

Nah, almost nobody uses high velocity rifles except for hunting. The odds of encountering rifle fire are almost non-existent. For police work IMO , a lighter vest that will stop pistol fire is all that is needed. No need for friggin plates or vests that will stop the latest military grade rifle ammo. If somebody is shooting that or an Ak-47 or 30-06 you got worse problems to think of, like they probably are shooting at your head. Go get a Bear-cat.

As to replacing an old fiber armor, yes that is a good idea, as the plastic/fiber Kevlar does degrade over time . So replace it with a newer set of light body armor, all that AR500/Class 3 is simply a waste of money and weighs more and is more motion and comfort restrictive and you won't ever be in a real war with anyway.

Frick , use E-bay , or if your conscience bothers you post some bulletin boards ad's at places you know where street thugs don't go.
I really would not worry much about it, there are already thousands of (for sale ad's) for maybe millions of sets of old body armor on the net. Check Alibaba or E-bay, So much surplus armor for cheap it is not funny.
