- Video posted to Facebook this weekend shows four adult shoplifters casually strolling out of a Lincoln Park store with as many coats as each one can carry. Meanwhile, a stunned store worker trails behind, seemingly helpless to do anything about it.
Marshall’s “just got they dumb ass got” Facebook user Binky GZ wrote in her Dec. 13 post. “They walked out this bitch with hella coats.” No doubt about that.
Video is rolling as the men walk past the check-out lines one-by-one with piles of winterwear.
The second thief has so many coats in his arms, he can barely see over the top of the stack as he walks.
But the third man has more style, preferring to keep his haul of about 10 coats neatly arranged on their hangers as he hot-foots it toward the door.
They video and broadcast their blatant thefts. If the police showed up, the store would refuse to sign complaints anyway. But why bother since Crimesha would refuse to prosecute in any event? You'd only be exposing yourself (and taxpayers) to liability. Better that everyone should pay an extra ten percent (or more) so that this type of thievery can occur on a daily basis.

When you go into a store ask them if they prosecute shoplifters. If they don’t then you know they jacked up the price of what you may be buying because somebody has to pay for the loss and it’s not the store. In fact they should be required to have “We don’t prosecute shoplifters” signs in their windows much like the “no guns allowed” signs. Save everybody some time & trouble. In ancient times when I worked A/6 DD and would get an arrest or processing in some of these high line stores I would always ask for their insurers information. If the store was reluctant in signing complaints or failed to appear in court I notified the insurer and they were damn happy to get the information.
That’s why stores go out of business in Chicago.

My elderly uncle was at a mall. Saw three women filling up two carts and placing them near an exit. He smelled a rat and contacted an employee. The employee shrugged and ignored him. He went outside the door. A car pulled up, two people exited and went into the store. Within two minutes they came running out with the contents of the carts placed by the door. Mostly higher-end expensive stuff. He wrote down the make, model and plate number. He went back into the store to find a manager. Gave him the information plus descriptions. He told him that the people who placed the items near the exit were still in the store. The manager said whatever it happens often, wasn't worth the effort to file a police report.

So here's my problem. This makes my blood boil. I couldn't watch the video when I saw what it was about. The reason I don't shoplift isn't because I'm afraid of getting in trouble (which apparently I wouldn't), it's because it's not right. And these people aren't shoplifting because they're poverty-stricken and can't afford a coat, they're just looking to make a buck. My first inkling, if I saw anyone so bold as to do this, would be to attempt to stop them...which obviously would be ill-advised. So how does someone who knows right from wrong and LIKES living in a law-and-order society just turn a blind eye to jagoffs like this? I guess in a very small way, this is the same problem you cops have these days.
It's a small consolation that the stores won't put up with this, and eventually they'll close. (Is THAT the answer to criminals? Just don't even try making a go of it because they'll rob you blind?) That will leave a "clothing desert" where they once were...but the scumbags will just move farther afield. Then what? It's not a good plan, and it's not going to end well...

Can't do that to the on line stores. That is one of there big cost advantages that the store front stores don't get. The more they try to pass these costs onto the customers, the fewer paying customers they will have and eventually they will be seeking bankruptcy protection. The complacent managers and employees will be out of work. There is a practical reason that stealing is wrong. There is a practical reason that it should carry criminal penalties that are actually enforced and sufficient to stop this.
It would be very interesting to know the theft losses of the national chains and in localities (such as Crook County). It might tell one where NOT to shop.

Saw this happen t the JCP at the University Park Mall, Mishawaka, Indiana. Yep next door to Norte Dame. Shopping carts loaded down with sporting and athletic apparel. Employees did nothing and are reminded to allow the theft to continue. The employees are scared sh!tless. I read the new prosecutor in San Francisco, Chesa Boudin, will no longer enhance charges if one belongs to a gang. Chesa? And yes it looks male but then I would be assuming gender. I’ve worked in Loss Prevention for various retailers all over the southside and suburbs for the past 15 years and the game has certainly changed. Back in the day, a lot of companies had fully staffed LP Departments in every store, would prosecute 100%, and we were allowed handcuff shoplifters if they resisted. These days, staffing has been reduced (death of brick & mortar retail), and most companies today have a strictly “hands-off” policy, meaning when I go to detain someone if they tell me to go f*ck myself, all I can really do is tell them to have a blessed day. Prosecution policies vary from retailer to retailer as well, but as for signing complaints, most retailers discourage anyone other than LP, from calling the police for theft-related issues. Retailers are scared to death of becoming the next Starbucks and ending up in the news because a person of color was “discriminated against” by a member of management. In fact, after all that nonsense at Starbucks, I even had to go through unconscious bias training. Believe me, a lot of retail managers would love nothing more than to be able to call the police for this nonsense, but it’s the corporate overlords that restrict them from doing so. I’ll end with a glimmer of hope- a lot of these knuckleheads at some point cross the county line and wind up trying to or hitting stores in DuPage. A lot of the LP investigators who track these groups wait til they hit in DuPage and file complaints there so their asses get firmly nailed to the wall, since they don’t believe in “restorative justice” on that side of the county line.
