- Foul language dangerous to Recruits!
This week at the Academy, a veteran police officer with a distinguished career, well respected amongst peers and past recruits alike, was relieved of his position on the gym staff and relocated elsewhere because he was deemed ‘a danger’ to recruit training!
As it turns out, the foul language and sarcastic comments he uttered during recruit punishment for tardiness - hurt these snowflakes feelings so irreparably - that their homeroom instructor (another veteran officer and marine !!!?? ) had to come to their rescue. This brave homeroom Veteran, cast Vicariously as both Villain and Victim, was vivified at the viciousness of the verbose gym veteran’s villainy, and vowed to seek a vendetta, not in vain, but to vanguard the victims virginity.
A CR was initiated against this barbaric officer as recruits hands were held as they recorded their hurt feelings and the spoken bad words in to/from subject reports.
While the ending of this story is still unfolding, you can sleep safely at night knowing that while future PPOs might not have the same physical skills acquired by prior recruits, nor be as well prepared for violent encounters, or be fortified with mental toughness to withstand personal insults and ethnic slurs, they will be well trained on documenting bad words and hurtful language used by officers and offenders alike!

Because the denizens of the west and south sides are going to be oh-so-gentle with their words and actions once these snowflakes hit the streets. This used to be an actual City of Big Shoulders, rough sports, and rougher politicians. I guess they won’t like being called cowards also when they hit the streets and decided not to back up other officers ( unless that beat is calling for another car) which we already have veterans who don’t ride on other officers jobs. Which I think is ridiculous and dangerous. A show of force is always better then just one 10-4 unit no matter what type of call it is. Don’t wait for that beat to call for more calls just go if you are not on a job or etc. Stay safe everyone and please back each other up no matter what. Don’t wait until the call comes out for more cars because then it might be to late one day!!!!
I always thought that it was travesty of justice that PTSD was virtually not allowed for police officers.

I don't know what happened or the details but even I thought some of the academy drill instructor stuff was overboard, and that was 24 years ago. This isn't the marines. First off, six months in the academy isn't going to prepare you to work the ghetto districts. Actual experience with veteran officers and putting time in does the trick.
I been retired and my son has over 20 years on the job. They used to say this ain't your fathers police department. Well not only is that true, but it appears it's not the one my son joined either.
I have to wonder what these new recruits will do when someone steps on their shoes, spits in their face and calls their mother names.
I thought old man Daley ran with the Ragen's Colts? Regardless, these pussywillow snowflakes will be in for a rude awakening after they get off their cycles and are on their own doing traffic and street stops to appease their commander's thirst for activity. Because eventually they are going to run into some psychotic cat that doesn't care that they are the police. Verbal assault will be the least of their worries if things get physical, because that verbal judo only goes so far, and won't help you once some savage starts choking you out and your partner is screaming into the radio helplessly.

If you really have real time on the job (20 years? 25 years?) you’d know this ain’t your daddy’s police department. Hell, it ain’t MY police department anymore at 28 years on. Common sense and “being the police” dictate that we adapt all the time. You should know what kind of pussy and millennial Snowflakes they’re letting come on the job today. You should know how to conduct yourself professionally around such specimens. That said, this is why I’ll never be an FTO nor will I take a Sgt test. The Instructor mentioned is an incredible human being, brave beyond words, and an invaluable asset for the academy. So the snowflake squad was offended?! Wait til you respond to a 10-1 domestic on a hot summer night when everyone on scene has had it with everyone. You will not be prepared mentally and will get people hurt or killed as you stand there being offended. Give it 5 years, it’s not bad yet.

It’s already been here for the past 3 or so years. The “be the change” hires are all hipster “4s” who don’t like the police, want to change the world and vow to reach out to the gang members in the barrio where they grew up and help them with the struggle that they know from growing up. The others who are liberal “2s” are all from out of state or the suburbs or in their 30s who were unhappy in the business world. The out of towners moved to the city in the last 5 years and are going to be the change on the CPD and no nothing about this city. Their vast knowledge of the city is Lincoln park and wrigleyville because that’s where they moved after college from wherever they were transplanted from. It’s very rare to find any more tough neighborhood kids taking this job anymore. Kids who grew up in the north or southwest side parishes who grew up with cityworker families who drank in the local bars underage and got into trouble. Now it’s nothing but college snowflakes who frequent coffee bars and look at the ground when they walk down the hallway and can’t talk or make eye contact with anyone. They all no no personality and stare at their phones all day and in toll call. They are ALL business and can’t hold a conversation or have a laugh. They actually BELIEVE the garbage that is thrown at them in the academy. Walking through the academy the other day for training I killed sometime and hung out in some of the classrooms that were empty. They all have their chalkboard calendars with pretty chalk colors with everyone’s birthday on it and cute little sayings. Never was there any garbage like that in the academy. Now everyone is coddled. We got screamed at and mother f’d because that’s what happens to you in the street and you need to be use to it so you don’t lose your cool on the street. Unreal what powder puffs are coming on this job now.
It’s sad to say it but, this is the direction the department is going in. In the districts supervisors are to do random spot checks of body worn camera footage to identify incidents where officers used profanity. A CR is pulled for those who are caught using foul language. This is what the recruits are being taught (core values). Professionalism, professionalism, professionalism is being shoved down their throats. Not to make light of it, but I’m sure there’s a lot more to the story. Clout baby instructors walking around with personal beefs against one other and the recruits are being thrown in the middle. A few years ago Instructors came close to fist fights over who Deputy Chief Calloway was going to promote meritoriously. The were up Deputy Chief Johnson’s a— up until recently when Beck suspended the merit scam. They were backstabbing each other. It’s a lot of personality conflicts amongst the instructors. Yes I agree, the standard of the academy has changed for recruits, but it has almost changed for instructors. Have you seen the instructors lately? Some are out of shape and their uniforms are two sizes too big and covered with lent balls. The recruits are in trouble now that the instructor’s butt kissing was in vain. Many instructors, FTOs and tact officers feel like what’s the purpose in during their job if there’s no merit.

It's a different day, if you can't adapt, it's not their fault. Everyone here is an adult, and need to be treated as such. If the recruits are late, make them run a lap or whatever, but no need for language. If a recruit screws up, you don't need to threaten a boot in the ass, just talk to them . No biggie. We were all new once. We have a job to do, let's be professional and help each other out.

The Chicago Police Academy has always been a joke. Mostly because of it's personnel. The shenanigan's have been the stuff of legend over all the years of my career. In fact we named it "As the Academy Turns" in the early 90's.

There is a school of thought amongst those subject to the conditions of any probationary period that preaches that the more beefs against your superiors, the better your chances of not getting popped for something stupid. They see candidates getting the heave ho for petty infractions and have been coached by their more urban, public school graduate pals that a few cases are insurance against all but the most heinous of infractions. Subscribing to this theory might get you to the finish line, and sets the stage for a lifetime of beefing, filing and corroborating the beefs of others. Yes, they will do this in teams for their entire careers.
There are two sides to every story. Unless we know what this instructor said and the extent of his abuse, we should hold off on judgement. If the well respected marine home room instructor backed the recruits, maybe this drill instructor went too far. In the past, there have been drill instructors who were sadistic and brutal. These days are over.
The city must provide each recruit with noise cancelling headphones. Then whenever the recruit hears anything too “foul” etc. they slip the headphones on and protect their virgin ears and snowflake psychie.

Could have avoided all this if he had given them all participation trophy. They would all have been happy.
The first day of recruit training in 1973 the HR instructor told us that "bad"
language by the instructors was part of the training. Don't take it personal,
don't get upset. Citizens will call you bad things and you must take it/ accept it.
And just like the citizens, you could not respond to the instructors with bad
language. By the end of 12 weeks I thought my real name was jagoff or asshole.
Looking back, it was the correct, proper training.

Sgt Boone was a GREAT guy taught me how to shoot too. He met my PARENTS and they thought he was such a gentleman. I never heard him say a curse word so him telling someone he Is going to put his foot up the ass I WOULD actually have to hear it with my ears with the way he always carried himself. I WOULD BE hard pressed to believe he said that to ANYONE!

I hope their response to being spit in the face isn’t an emergency takedown. They strip you for that now.
This type of shit happens when you have people who were never the police with single digit years OTJ “teaching” and “instructing” at the Academy.
This type of shit happens when you have people barely old enough to have any real life experience “teaching” and “instructing” at the Academy.
I don’t give a fuck where you went to school, how many degrees you might have, if you’re a workout freak or what kind of credentials were ladled upon you after a block or two of “specialized training”. You can’t effectively instruct on something you’ve never learned yourself. You can’t teach people to be the police if you were never the police yourself.
Perfect example?? Look no further than the majority of people teaching procedural justice, use of force and the like. Put in at least 15 - 20 years of patrolling the streets from the perspective of a beat car in moderate to crazy districts where you’ll have the pleasure of experiencing all things police and I might just agree there’s still something you can teach this old dog. And I don’t want to hear how the Pilates and yoga in today’s academy curriculum “is where today’s policing is at”.
Acting Supe CB needs to clean house at 1300 W. Jackson next. A thorough dumping of everybody whose resume consists of being a career house mouse with no common sense or street smarts. Resumes, references, award and disciplinary histories, a review of work/arrest history, complete with grammar and spelling assessments and an interview with an independent psychologist/psychiatrist to assess mental stability/acuity for all aspiring instructors. Military service a bonus.
Ah, who am I kidding? They want to keep the instructors on par with the caliber of people they’re pushing through training these days. It’s all part of the restorative justice plan.

I worked at the academy for a short time. A lot of these kids have never had an actual job with a boss. A good percentage of them were Uber/Lyft drivers. Others had many bullshit jobs like being a barista. At 21 years old some of them had worked over 5 different jobs since leaving high school. The reason was always the same.......I didn’t like my boss. Speaks volumes.

I watched this mornings live video feed of the 005th Dist Memorial for Officer Marmolejo and Gary. It was a very nice memorial.
Some thoughts/observations though:
Will someone Please tell officers that when they are in uniform but are Not wear a hat, you Do Not salute the flag. The exempt members all put their hands over their hearts properly but officers not wearing hats around the room saluted the flag.
While it appeared the female Sgt who spoke had the best intentions, she should not have spoken. Proper English is important. Additionally, it appeared that she was not prepared to speak. She had no speech prepared and just winged it. It did not come off well.
You real coppers, the tax payers, and honest citizens of Chicago are fucked. A new law suit just unfolded. "Barbaric" physical training will be suspended, until an officer needs the CQB skills for real, gets hurt or worse, and then the law suit happens because, "necessary skills were not taught at the academy". I'm so glad I sold my home at a loss and moved behind the Cheddar Curtain.

I have an idea of who this officer was. He was constantly bashing liberals and snowflakes during his instruction period. He was a breath of fresh air in the academy. We had a female FTO tell us that if someone spits in our face, we have to grin and take it. The next day we asked his opinion and he gave us quite a different opinion. I'm actually surprised he lasted that long in that leftist environment that the academy has become. Instead of getting more time in the gym learning take downs or some ground skills, the new recruits are getting yoga classes.
I’m confused, was it the recruits who complained to their home room instructor who then initiated the CR or did the home room instructor overhear things and do it on his own?
Either way, shame on the home room instructor for going forward with it, tell those jerkoffs to suck it up, it will be much worse on the street. And if it was the recruits complaining to their home room instructor, that is some of the weakest group of recruits ever.
I just don’t understand what this accomplishes, what are they trying to prepare these recruits for? I’ve only been on 7 years, and I could never imagine that happening in my academy.
Best time to be a FTO, since they are the only one's that can document the individual PPO's problems. The Academy won't do it. FTO's can weed out the individual's problems and hopefully document their issues.
All PPO's should be assigned high crime districts, not districts like 22 or 16. What's the point? It's like having the recruits walk foot patrol for their entire probationary period on the Impact Zones in 2013 to 2015. What a waste of time.

Coupled with poor sleep cycles, inadequate nutrition and physical care, and not enough family time with working holidays, during school plays, etc. along with the feeling of being under appreciated, thrown under the bus, at risk of discipline or job loss even when making one’s honest best effort - these stories destroy departments. Don’t let them. If one person truly did this, I suspect he or she is a plant. And if they aren’t, then just move on. Don’t scorn every new hire, don’t shame everyone different or less experienced than you, and don’t let this bullshit tear us apart any further. If there was such a person as a memo writer for an incident at the academy, they will quit on their own or be washed out. They don’t have what it takes and they made a mistake taking this job. You won’t have to worry about them working with you on the street. They’ll go back to advertising or Starbucks or Teach for America.

I dont know the circumstances of so I am not going to comet on this incident. I was detailed to the training division because I was light duty due to a on duty injury. I was not a Physical Fitness Instructor, I taught patrol procedure. I could not believe how some of the recruits reacted when told their duties and functions when on patrol. I was not telling them to so anything in violation of any Laws, General Orders, and/or Special Orders. They questioned many of the procedures practiced by the department. During one exchange with a recruit regarding traffic stop procedures the recruit did not understand what I was explaining. After several attempts I told the recruit that I could not take up any more time with this particular procedures I told the recruit that he should either see me after that particular class or see me at the end of the day. The recruit stated I was being rude and he asked if anyone else did not understand. Everyone of his classmates stated that they understood and he was the only one who did not. Well guess what, he complained to the Academy's Administration that I was insensitive to his needs. This occurred 25 years ago. So it just not today's recruit.
More evidence to keep your mouth shut. And when you get stuck with a snowflake just off probation cuz your partner took off, the one you have to fear most will not be the POS in front of you, but the cop next to you or behind you.

Cpd has been scraping the bottom of the barrel for the last 10-15 years, exception being county guys and some military guys. I’ve got 23 years otj and before that I had 4 years in ccj. You think cpd high was rough, the county punished us more in 3 months than cpd ever did. I’m sure it’s changed since my time, but the way the sheriffs use to get us ready for the jail would make what happens at our academy today seem like a cakewalk.

I'm a school teacher (private, underpaid non-striking type) and the son of a retired and deceased Chicago Police Officer (who was a female and was made a cop when there were real police out there) and I wish you all the best of luck. The city doesn't want cops, they want social justice warriors who will give someone a back rub and send them happily on their way. This city is beyond fucked. Yea, the suburbs are perfect. What might surprise you is that the suburban kids 20 to 35 love the city. Who do you think are renting all the apartments downtown, near north, wicker park, etc and go to all the packed bars in those areas and see who is in them. Why not plenty of PPO’s get assigned to 016 just prior to getting off probation for the rest of their time on the job while veteran officers from ghetto can’t bid into 016
Thinking more about it now, maybe the instructors are reaping what they sow? I've talked to a ton of new cops over the last five years that have told me the academy teaches them not to talk to the veterans or at least listen to us because we were taught the old ways and are just bitter. Many have even told me they were told not to read the SCC blog by instructors! Okay, academy representatives, you know better then all us veterans, have fun.
I also remember in the academy how certain homeroom stupervisors would have pet rats that would inform on their classmates. For petty shit, nothing serious. I knew the academy was a joke after myself and others were disciplined because the big bad range guy had a snitch that I'm sure he was trying to bang.
As someone pointed out, they got Lieutenants doing random body cam checks to make sure no one is using naughty words. Back when I got on the job they were more worried about you beating people and taking money. Now they'll spank you if you are on camera smoking a cigar. This job is done. Remain fetal and try to find someone to work with that isn't a complete idiot.
They are accomplishing what they want. Weak recruits who do nothing, no street stops or arrests, but keep the city from getting lawsuits from chases, arrests, street stops and general policework. You can skate your way they all you time on the job

With 20 years on the job, never saw it happen and it sure won’t be happening now. Bosses are afraid of the new officers and would never tell an officer to leave the star and ID at the desk. Used to have contests with those guys and I was no spring chicken. Called everyone by there star number; No names. Cracked a couple of ribs in redman and let them know I could no longer do certain exercises. They protected my ass because they knew I was a physical competitor and not looking to get out of any work. Told me to tell no-one, just lay there when class was doing sit ups or push ups. If the the word got out, I would have had to wait two/three months to get into a class again. Their understanding saved me from loosing 800 seniority points. Forever grateful.

I dont know the circumstances of so I am not going to comet on this incident. I was detailed to the training division because I was light duty due to a on duty injury. I was not a Physical Fitness Instructor, I taught patrol procedure. I could not believe how some of the recruits reacted when told their duties and functions when on patrol. I was not telling them to so anything in violation of any Laws, General Orders, and/or Special Orders. They questioned many of the procedures practiced by the department. During one exchange with a recruit regarding traffic stop procedures the recruit did not understand what I was explaining. After several attempts I told the recruit that I could not take up any more time with this particular procedures I told the recruit that he should either see me after that particular class or see me at the end of the day. The recruit stated I was being rude and he asked if anyone else did not understand. Everyone of his classmates stated that they understood and he was the only one who did not. Well guess what, he complained to the Academy's Administration that I was insensitive to his needs. This occurred 25 years ago. So it just not today's recruit.

The mayor just announced she wants a city owned co-op marijuana center. These millennial coppers will be in heaven, with the stupidity they possess maybe they are already partaking in the weed explosion! It is totally insane how these young children in the police academy cannot comprehend logic. Maybe mom forgot to refill the ritalin pills,and now many are coming on at 21 years of age with a basic associates degree from a community college. A college where absolutely anyone even a stone could get a degree.
The academy is full of NON street officers who went to hide from the streets!
I give them credit they look great in uniform. I seen on of my class mates from the 96 class walking around.

Ohh red man. Those were some good times in that gym. Frost picks out 10 people and tells us to form a skirmish line and he sends the rest of the two other home rooms in the gym to go kick our asses and our job was to survive. It was like fucking thunder done in there. I got my ass kicked but I learned quickly.
Where was the drill instructor transferred to upon his reassignment?

Came on in 70 with Stanley Sarbanck as the head gym bone crusher along with several other sadistic instructors. Numerous broken bones,teeth knocked out,and concussions were the norm. My class had 350 guys and not one beefer about being worked over. They prepared us for the street not the desk crew. 99% of us at that time were from the city and new what day it was. Take the beating so you can defend yourself on the street. Now it sounds like its not COPA in there it sounds like a certain federal agency has a few recruits in there to find out what really goes on in the department. Instead of combat tactics everyone should be given pillows for pillow fights. Rest in peace CPD.

And, there is NOTHING restful about the "leaning rest" position. Still, the academy was the best 6 months of the job. Every class had a rogue group that didn't want to go with the program. They got to stick around at the range after we shot and cleaned the brass. They got to clean the shotguns after Marseilles...but, they didn't beef and took their medicine. Complain to the Watch Commander about your F.T.O.? W.C. said,"Get the fuck out of my office!" This new breed can be tough to deal with. Military, kids of cops, and transfers from other departments seem to be the easiest to get along with at this point. One of the 1st things home room instructor said was...NO ONE LIKES A BEEFER. Guess those days are over.
I remember range instructor Crawford back in 93. In my face daily with his hot foul breath. My nose hair has never regrown.

i very much disagree: In corporate life WE don’t face every low life shit head on the planet. That instructor was prepping them for the real world. I’d rather some one rip me up in training and make me strong so I can face the horror freak show these men and women do every single day. And yes, you’d and I would be bounced out of a job. I’d help bounce your ass out or walk my own out . That makes sense as corporate life has a social construct. We’re cramped in close quarters all day long. we have to keep behaviors in check all the time. And yes, corporate life used to be filled with shit and screamers (I worked with a few in my multi degrees world). However: Street life is much harsher than this instructor will ever behave or we’ll ever need to endure. Go on a Weekend ride along at night when some asshole is behaving a 1000000 times worse and see how you handle it. corporate life is NOT the same. I would not trust my life to a whiney assed complainer and nor should you. I’d want someone who sucked it up and worked their ass off becoming the best ever. I had an epic battle with instructor V along with that other foreign lunatic during instructor redman (wasnt really a battle, i got whooped) back in 2012/2013. When the ass whooping was over i sat for 10 mins in the cafeteria with a concussion, to this day one of the best preparations for the street fight i could imagine...it made me built to work the ghetto districts.

First off, six months in the academy isn't going to prepare you to work the ghetto districts. Actual experience with veteran officers and putting time in does the trick.

I had 16 weeks. And the reason for the "drill instructor stuff" as you put it, is to get you to follow orders and fall in line. Out on the street, in a critical situation, orders need to be followed and "drill instructor stuff" is how you do it.
I do agree nothing substitutes for life experience. Talking to you harshly, does get you numb to the harsh words that WILL be coming your way in real life.

The best advice I ever got from the Police Academy (I went to SLEA seven years ago) was from a retired P.O. from the West Chicago Police Department. His advise to new recruits and PPOs...???

We will never get the best recruits until residency is lifted. Some of the best kids in the city see the writing on the wall and want to move out of the city proper. Some intelligent kids raised in the suburbs do not want to commit to a life of living in the city.. that is before we even get to the job itself. Substandard equipment, no leadership, minimal chance for advancement (unless your heavy), pay not so great (by suburban standards), all to ridiculed and second guessed. Good luck recruiting the best. This is not the old CPD, there is no longer pride or tradition.
