As Predicted Here and Elsewhere
Those "Weed Amnesty" boxes at the airports? Not very secure at all:
- Marijuana has only been legal in Illinois for 23 days, so in the minds of some, the crime that occurred Wednesday at Chicago's Midway Airport was only a matter of time.
Chicago Police confirm that a traveler arriving in Chicago grabbed the pot inside Midway's so-called "amnesty box", a storage unit near security where passengers can surrender their newly-legal marijuana before traveling.
A source told NBC5 the marijuana in question had been discovered on a traveler early Wednesday, and that person was escorted to the amnesty box where they were allowed to deposit their weed without penalty.
Local
When police went to empty the box around 8pm, the marijuana was gone. A check of airport surveillance cameras showed a man grabbing the pot and hurrying away, around 6 p.m.
Um...so what? A traveler, in order to avoid running afoul of Federal Law, voluntarily deposits a completely legal (in Illinois) substance into an "amnesty" box. An observant citizen accesses and removes said substance that is completely legal (in Illinois) and voluntarily surrendered.
It's like rifling through someone's garbage can in the alley - there's no expectation of privacy or possession when you toss it out in a publicly accessible area. There's no crime here that we can see. What say the readers?

Next time, I will leave a note and a sawbuck. Well, maybe not. What is the big deal? It is only a little weed for cripe's sake. Can you guys tell me where the black tar heroin amnesty box is located?
Said person is a genius.
Technically, everything before security is open to the public. Weed is legal (in Illinois) what’s thrown away is open for everyone.
Kudos to said person
You'd be an idiot to smoke some random strangers weed but sharing is caring.
1. Free weed!!!
2. Dumpster dive for da free munchies!!!
3. Uhhhh, what was I sayin'?
Off topic- Is city hall a detail or fixed post
Who exactly would the victim be? Not the city. Not the original depositer. How could the city be the victim? Is a representative of the city going to call the police and say someone stole the cities weed? No victim no crime.
The politicians made us a joke!
"It's like rifling through someone's garbage can in the alley - there's no expectation of privacy or possession when you toss it out in a publicly accessible area. There's no crime here that we can see. What say the readers?"
That would be a valid point of view, IF the drop box was on the public way.
City Drop box on City Property.
Is it actually legal in Chicago to possess weed if you can't prove you paid for it?
Not theft.
Looks like dumpster diving to me.
I would be laughing my ass off if it wasn’t so sad.
This city is run by absolute fucking assholes.
And the joke is on us, because we have to live here under their rule.
And why is CPD wasting time and manpower recovering and inventorying it?
Abso-fuckin-lutely....they are going to sue, and should win!!! The garbage analogy is spot fucking on.
I was at a airport in the uk where outgoing travelers could leave a umbrella that they had purchased while on vacation, and the umbrellas were free for anyone to take upon arrival. I would imagine some were recycled several times. The weed amnesty box is the same thing isn’t it. Unless some enterprising young scamp was collecting free weed from the box to sell on the street.
Someone showed initiative and was rewarded, as it should be. Unlike the blue shirts that are hung out to dry.
I suppose you could equate it to having someone go through those large Goodwill donation boxes that used to be sitting in mall parking lots (Are they still around?) Is that theft? I suppose it is - Exerting unauthorized control of property not yours. I would think the pot box would be similar, but more fun...
Give a penny, take a penny
Are they sure it wasn't our Illinois Lieutenant Governor who took it?
And our city braindeads expected what????
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
Better him than the TSA pukes or a CPD airport officer. A new O'Hara perk Free Weed. Nothing to see here.
So now that weed is legal what happens to all the CPD confiscated? Maybe a CPD auction would help fund your pension.
Only surprise is that it took that long.
We should ask Warren G. Biden to weight in on this issue.
He's a real sharp cookie with a long history of flying 'round
the world and causing misery.
At best it’s a non criminal concerning property to document the incident.
Off topic Sorry

No crime. Let the guy have it so some copper doesn't have to deal with it. 19P
like you all don't have enough to worry about...
no crime
ACLU will say the box was not properly labeled.
God this place blows.
It was hilarious to see both Mullane and Georgas COMPLETELY lose their minds over this. God Forbid something real happens. They'll need to be sedated. So easy to spot overpromoted cowards. They had the coopper make not one, but 2 case reports for the same incident. Even more obvious stupidity.
Not sure where to file this. Suburban raised tough guy and CPS Music Teacher Paul DeNovi chastises police, makes allegations about Garrido and invites the Gardiner Stalkers to chime in with (false?) accounts of a counter protest to a rally for Laquan McDonald five years ago. Read the account of a woman named Colleen with claims of harassment by off duty police, fire and other city workers who live in the neighborhood.
https://mobile.twitter.com/PDenovi/status/1220488948897796097
It almost sounds like slander against Garrido.
Who the Fuk Cares!!!! Get high every day in the Hell of Chicago
I wonder if the groot fires up a little skunkbud once in awhile.
like rifling through someone's garbage can in the alley - there's no expectation of privacy or possession when you toss it out in a publicly accessible area. There's no crime here that we can see.
Maybe not a crime, but technically that is a city owned (recovery) box located in a bldg that is governed by the federal government who still considers weed as an illegal substance.
Laws are a mess. Was that Chrimesha picking up the weed for a personal test or a friend?
A whole new industry: weed share, better than book sharing, especially since the pot lot probably can't see straight enought to read anyway.
What, leave the weed to TSA?
Need a sign: see some, take some, leave a bit for the next pothead.
Or this sign: welcome to chicago: help yourself and anjoy a high time
Priceless and the weed theft was only a matter of time.
No blood, no foul
The weed needs to be inventoried as crushed green plant by the Chicago police, not just thrown in a box. Do they have a gun box for legally possessed weapons?
OT - Corona Virus.
See all the news coverage yesterday? So did I. One patient here...somewhere...in Chicago.
And the hospital where that patient is at?
>Crickets<
Inquiring minds want to know.
Don't want to have the big chest grabber and go to the same hospital.
Would you?
"There's no crime here that we can see. What say the readers?"
SCC,
Crime or not, just the thought of allowing our Cook County States Attorney the power to approve any marijuana charges of this nature...
That's like letting Foxx guard the hemphouse.
OT: Groot was in D.C. Speaking to other mayors and told everyone the reason for all of the shootings in Chicago stems from " lack of investments in certain areas of the city". No Groot......it stems from no family structure, fatherless homes, lack of common decency, lack of criminal prosecution......So lets see.......there is no Jewels in my neighborhood so I'm fittna shoot at any motherfucker I see that ain't in my gang....
If you don't want people removing it, make the box more secure like a bank night deposit box.
Pot Head Pritzker and Grass Lov'in Groot are really making names for themselves!
Your analogy of going thru someone's garbage can is accurate.
That Ralph Macchio looking tool Georgas came up with that idea. But now it's joke so he'll deny it. Mullane and Georgas motto is "Steal Credit, Pass Blame"
Who’s the victim for it to be a crime?! There IS NO VICTIM! Who leaked this dumb story to the media anyway.
They'll probably say it was taken from a City box so it became their property. Ridiculous since it saved the taxpayers the expense of having it destroyed.
The Chity doesn’t see putting pot in an amnesty barrel as ‘throwing away’ or ‘disposing of’ the pot.
In the pols’ minds, the person voluntarily transferred care, control, custody AND OWNERSHIP to the Chity.
As such, the person who took it out of the barrel is guilty of ‘theft of city property’.
Page 48 of the january 2020 FOP magazine.. recognizes the 1064 team for a bunch of guns they just so happen to come across in a house. They were awarded officer of the mouth for it. All good and dandy but alottttt of those guns came back as nonfunctional aka replica weapons. So nice job seizing Hollywood prop guns boys and girls.
Does the City have any lawyers? If you didn't want people to take any there would be a lock on the door and a sign that says keep out. Maybe the should have used a few of the 'drug disposal' safes from the district? The City that Works! I think the biggest concern for the City is the loss of additional tax money.
There's no victim here. No victim, No crime. As long as the alleged thief doesn't board a plane with his booty right? And as long as he doesn't get caught in possession of more than one ounce of it he's gold. I wish I had thought of it!
I believe that falls under the category of theft of lost or mislaid pot. Also notice how they don't provide a description of the offender...
Simply recycling perfectly good items.
O.T. Do you know about the survey being conducted at the academy which is being administered by the university if chicago? our training in the future will be based on this? doesn't university of chicago hates the police, have ties with the Obama's, did our traffic stop survey in the past? and its optional to do, tell everyone they do not have to take it. fuck them.
Sure there is a crime: theft.
The good citizen is giving the weed to the govment:
city, airport or whoever set up the box.
The box is not a free weed box.
I'm waiting to see what the city, airport does when
a departing gives away or sells to an arriving.
Will they treat it like selling single cigarettes?
That didn't work well in NY,NY.
Years ago, when the cigar embargo against Cuba was going strong, I was flying back from Aruba. Cuban smokes were legal there, and I bought a couple of boxes. Outside of the airport there was a trashcan overflowing with Cuban cigars, still boxed, packaged, dumped by nervous Americans. I helped myself to a few handfuls and went through customs without a hitch. If customs found them, they would have taken them, and I might have paid a fine. Aruba DIDN'T CARE who took the cigars. You can now bring up to two boxes, I think, without paying a tobacco tax to customs. THE ONE THING OBAMA GOT RIGHT!
Dumpster diving is a legal profession.
Saw them in Denver airport. The dope dogs are there as you go thru the line too.
Dumpster diving 101
All this talk about weed is getting fucking old. The state is laughing all the way to the bank every time a millennial spends his Starbucks paycheck. Let them all walk around like zombies and fry their brains. Just dont step in front of my car...
Didn’t think digging into and taking from these depositories for unwanted items was illegal.
Water bottles must be emptied before entering the line or pitched into barrel...but your allowed to drink it beforehand if you want. Anything liquid, aerosols over 3 oz. is voluntarily pitched or it has to go as checked baggage.
Are there weed disposal notices posted that such may prohibited, that your weeds, once surrendered voluntarily are property of CPD, DOA, TSA or DHS ?
$2 says this was ALL a slaphappy Airport CPD brainstorm, sold to TSA and DOA.
Any input from HQ Legal Affairs or were they in agreement ?
Can’t touch this.
This isn’t U.S. Mail which established rules and laws regarding deposited contents.
If I drop my stash into the Weed Box and change my mind, where’s the procedure to retrieve what’s mine?
We shouldn’t be on the hook for ignorant travelers beyond signage.
Knives, guns, various other implements and substances are legal but prohibited by TSA as carry-on
They post this. Once in line and your property goes on the scanning belt it’s the travelers responsibility whether they detect contraband or not.
TSA has a civil notification process that may fine a traveler if they’re caught with a prohibited item other than a defined firearm or explosive.
Who Dunn’It?
We shouldn’t have slapped our CPD moniker on a box.
I’m no attorney nor a advocate for weed or weed users, but this is another example of panic at the disco with a hastily slapped together Order by incompetent Merit Hacks.
Our Airport CPD screwed up - Again...and a big City payout is likely.
What the heck, another $2 that these CPD branded Weed Boxes will be gone soon.
That indoor propane use was a doozy, but this Weed Box is whack.
Probably some technical violation of the law but illinois still can’t grasp that no one cares about weed.
Bend the end of a wire coat hanger, nonchalantly but deftly glide it down the box slot. Then reel in your catch. In Colorado it's called "high fishing". Is there a limit?
Agreed. What's the charge for removing discarded items. You can argue that the receptacle is specific for marijuana but that is now legal. Therefore the act is as insignificant as removing a recyclable from a bin specifically designed for recyclables.
This crime was so bad that it required two case reports.
Can we have a concrete physical description of this individual or are we once again forced to deal with ‘a male...’
May very well be the original owner returning home and picking it up or someone the original owner aked to get it for him. Even if a total stranger it is as you say SCC, legal. What if it is state purchased weed to start with?
I agree. No victim, no law making removal of donations a crime, nothing to see here. Move along.
I don't think the person taking the pot is doing anything illegal.
However, if the person finds 100 reefers in the trash and puts them in his backpack and the police find the 100 reefers on him, I think the quantity (100 reffers) exceeds the legal amount you can possess, even if you intend to use it yourself and not sell it.
Am I right?
Free candy except around here it’s free weed. Twixxxxxx
City hall is stationary. The assignment is not.
Why not design the weed box like a US mailbox, with a sliding door, where you can't reach inside and you can't put your hands inside?
You really have to laugh, at the joker absurdity that is the city of Chicago.
Evidently, the city of Chicago is badly butt hurt that somebody cobbed themselves a free baggie of weed. You'd swear it was 50 keys!(Kilos)
They absolutely cannot let this ever happen again!
So now, they are going to buy stonger deposit boxes, absolutely theft proof, fuck, why don't they just call up the Fort Knox Gun Safe Company!? LOL
Happy for the person who walked with some free samples. At least they didn't have to pay Chicago's highway robbery taxes on such.
I hope to continue to read such great entertaining news in the future that this city provides the rest of the nation.
Also amazing, no further news about how $200K of untraceable cash walked out of one dispensary. Anyone who worked at the place does have a great excuse though under questioning. "That Diesel she-it gave me short term memory loss, I don't remember a Goddamn thing!", Oh, by the way, you wouldn't happen to have a Snickers Bar on you, would you"? LOL
Replace marijuana with bottled water. Water is not allowed past security check point. So if they put a container out for bottles of water to be thrown out, and someone takes a tossed bottle, is that theft? No. It’s garbage and has no value to anyone.
No crime at all for emptying an airport trash bin. That trash cleaning traveler should have been given a discount ticket on something - like rolling papers perhaps.
since you asked, nah, not a criminal act. more like opportunism. the whole "that's legal" thing will take a while to normalize. culture shift.
sort of like self defense carry. it felt natural to those of us who'd been ignoring the obstruction to a right. many are coming along on that path as well.
If it is legal for police to go thru someone’s trash it is legal or this guy to take the weed. Look at what I found. Would’ve very careful though someone could poison or spike the weed. Than what. State gets sued because the picked up weed was in state packaged containers. All ash samples and I bet dry poor video quality at point of purchase if any.
Possession is 9 points of the law. Only Illinois would design a drop box that someone could reach into. Typical Democratic smarts.
Free will offering and taking box.
That don’t happen on the community street corners without someone getting shot.
In reality, this is no different than someone taking a water bottle out of the bin at the TSA line. I wouldn’t do it, but there’s no crime there.

Next to the black tar opium box. San Francisco, mid 60's, due to large Chinese population, was readily available. Small chunk, tinfoil 'dragon tail' and a match. "Sweet Dreams Baby", Roy Orbison, 1962. RIP, Roy.
no crime
"I needed it for medicinal purposes. I thought it was a dispensary"
Where is the crime, technically, it looks like the offender (lol) went garbage picking.
Oooh so now they're only the temporary boxes. Such bullshit. They WERE permanent until this happened. Now the permanent ones will be here in a few weeks. My guess it'll be dropsafes.
Put one of those at 26 and California's intake.
I'm surprised it took this long.
Make the boxes the same as US mailboxes. You can't put your hands inside and reach the weed.
Vanecko Amnesty Box Collection Service, LLC will be the complaintant on behalf of Vanecko Cannabis Recycling Servce, LLC, which is a division of Daley 'BOHICA' Pilferage Industries. See the employee at the site for a signature.
Ha ha this is great. So now, it's still illegal federally, but legal LOCALLY, to have pot here...but if someone disposes of theirs because it's "less" legal (more illegal?) where they're going, and someone picks it up, that's a crime?
So how about if someone deposits some tainted pot, and someone else grabs it, tokes up, and gets sick or dies? Have the depositor AND the receiver then committed crimes?
I've got a GREAT idea. Why not just make pot ILLEGAL?
Meanwhile the folks who work rental cars at either airport are benefitting from folks leaving it in their rental cars.
I applaud this ingenious citizen.
These Mopey MF'ers should be Fired.
Let them sue to get back on

Hey I'd lose my mind too if someone made off with my stash for the merited...
Hey dude, where is my airplane?
Where did we get these deposit boxes “venecko recycling.” Wouldn’t the idea be that you can’t access the items inside. The city would screw up a one float parade.
Clearly, the person in question was out of gas, and didn't care to give up any ass. No one rides for free!
"So now that weed is legal what happens to all the CPD confiscated? Maybe a CPD auction would help fund your pension."
That's not a bad idea!
Yeah, this just sounds like dumpster diving on the part of a clever citizen. Normally airport drop boxes for things like knives that TSA doesn't like will have local-mail envelopes so you're effectively mailing it to yourself, but I gather that the city authorities didn't think things through? Unless there's been some heavy duty legal maneuvering and appropriate signage indicating that you're gifting possession of your weed to a named agency or the City itself and not just dumping it in a glorified trash can, I fail to see how any sort of crime could be charged here.
Maybe put a baby safe haven box next to it?
Just think how much money Indiana casinos will take in on Super Bowl Sunday. Everything that this city does is a complete joke! On average 8 individuals are shot daily but don’t get caught with plastic utensils or straws.
TSA is federal why should police officer havew anything to do with a FEDERAL agency that doesnt enforce federal laws.
I have seen TSA agent steal peoples oversized cologne bottles, expensive whiskey, and those lovely CUBAN cigars. YEP they put them in a trash can near the area the search and then recover them after the crowd lets out.
So why now does a lowly AIRPORT clouted needed for weed which is equivalent to cigarettes with a state income tax stamp.
YOU airport exempts really need to read and start thinking ahead. the days of waiting for a special order are falling behind.
What if a person flies to Denver and weed is legal there? (i know follow the order)
What if a 2 persons have a medical card and load up the suit case to the maximum? (City will be sued)
Just think the TSA is just changing rule for those asshat that have pets on the plane with fake pet paper work!
???
"It's like rifling through someone's garbage can in the alley - there's no expectation of privacy or possession when you toss it out in a publicly accessible area. There's no crime here that we can see. What say the readers?"
That would be a valid point of view, IF the drop box was on the public way.
City Drop box on City Property.
Is it actually legal in Chicago to possess weed if you can't prove you paid for it?
OH my another college grad! City carts are city property too and those lovely alley you drive through to your garage is city property too.
If the garbage receptacle is not secured and not available to the public then it fair game.
WEED is now a perishable item. the city is moving about 5 years behind on all its rules.
And wait till an officer locks someone up who refuses to show a receipt? a NEW order will pop up and tell you to just act like weed is cigarettes.
Correction to earlier comment - Apparently these Weed Boxes are not marked CPD, nor was an arrest made. But the whole system is ripe to called upon (for Unit Activity) as agents for Merit birdbrains to arrest any folks tampering, rummaging and or pilfering from them, without due warnings. Since no arrest was made, its still a pisser to have to standby, ready to sandbag someone because of inept knee jerk policy and clueless supervision, that now has to answer to the mystery if such voluntary disposal boxes are necessary or protected property of CPD, TSA or DOA. Once defined, they may just create another added duty (sign an inspection/weed box check event number book10x a day) or maybe an exclusive house mouse courier detail.
Wonder if the traveling thief used a fish hook and line or Juicy Fruit on a stick.
I'm guessing the weed bow is a recycling of the tip boxes that never made it.
They didn't pay taxes on it. That's the crime.
Check the Field Reporting Manual.
It would be recorded on a Not Lost & Not Found Property case report.
IUCR Code 0420!
How long before there is a kid in the amnesty box like the kids who climb into the toy machines with the claw?
QUIT CHASING CARS!!! 007th "rangers" chased a car right into a Sgt on her way home from work! You guys are fucking dickheads!!! For what a gun?! Dumb bastards if you take 15 or 30 I don't feel sorry for you!

Watch it, don't give then (Groot) ideas. Turn in a gun and get a pound of weed......
When recycling began, it was only a matter of weeks before the Elgin city council passed an ordinance declaring that all items in the recycling bin on the curb were officially city property. Dumpster divers would be prosecuted for theft if caught picking out aluminum cans.
But that brings the next point: What does the city do with the donated weed?
Soon the city will start renting lockers for $50 a day. Cash only...
Make the boxes the same as US mailboxes. You can't put your hands inside and reach the weed.
1/25/2020 02:04:00 PM
You are quite wise, however, your solution requires common sense and forethought. Those two things are quite rare in Chicago city government. Along the very same line, they could have used the drug safe from the front desk in 013 and in 021, with one safe going to O'Hare and the other one to Midway, but the "geniuses" making the decisions never thought to ask us.
Drop Acid not Bombs— because Peace is the ultimate Trip, Man. Tune in/Turn On/ Drop Out/Right On! Tell it like it is and let it all hang out, Man. Peace is Groovy! CPD needs a sit in / teach in/ love in/ smoke in on this subject
A friend with Weed is a friend, indeed, Man! Remember: weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no weed! Man!
Squad, hold me down for munch, ..er I mean Lunch.
It’s amazing the ignorance in this dept. I have not seen these boxes, however I’ve never seen any one stick their hands in a U.S post office blue fucking mail box!!!! Could no one Atleast come up with something similar and bolt it to the ground!? Wtf. Btw I may entertain the supt. Position if they offer it to me lmao.
How hard was it to just use the type of safe system we already have in the districts, I.e. rotating drum
Locked door on bottom. Only the best and brightest, NOT
Why are people talking about taxes and proof?
read the actual law and drop down to the area about growing your own plants.
Was it really pot? All you have is a picture of someone taking something out of an unsecured box. Big deal over nothing now that its legal. Real crime goes unpunished but this has some merit assholes stepping on there dicks again.
Whomever stole the weed out of the box did the city a favor. Now they don't have to waste man-hours on a case report, inventory, transportation, security and environmentally friendly destruction.
Hey, you BOYS AND GIRLS are giving PEOPLE in general too much credit.
If you make the boxes look like mailboxes idiots will be shoving mail into them. I don't give a fuck what color it is or stickers or paint, it is will be dropping their fucking US mail in there. They put there US mail in UPS and FedEx boxes. You think this is a fucking solution?
If its such a big deal, then why did the state make it legal? Just more making up news, where there in fact is none. Time for me to move to a mountain top, too many horses asses, and not enough horses.

Dude, this Vanecko shit is way too old already. Grow up and find something else to bitch about.
Lucky they just took the weed and not the whole box.
change the amnesty box name to 'take a dime, leave a dime'
Here in Massachusetts, weed's legal. TSA are State employees. And so I can fly legally with one ounce or less down to Tampa, Florida out of Logan. Now, it's not legal in Tampa, but no one has ever been waiting for me at the Tampa end. TSA has other stuff to deal with I guess. Been doing it since the election. Dunno what the BFD is with all this. Illegal pot is over folks.
I hope they grabbed some doritos to go with that.

You have been smoking too much weed! TSA is Federal! Just say no!
If marijuana possession is no longer illegal why is the aviation department even getting involved in any aspect of it. Outside of the airport, like any other public location being a non smoking environment, there’s nothing to enforce. If TSA screeners have a problem with passengers bringing marijuana with them, let them be the conduit to dispose of the item that’s not allowed to be transferred interstate. The aviation department has no part in the collection, inventoring or disposal of confiscated materials. Those are issues for the TSA.
